@notimagain “genuine attempts at considered analysis, with perhaps a range of possible outcomes being listed,” yes please! Considered analysis by a few posters is why I’m still reading these threads. I can’t get that elsewhere easily. Every time I try and fond stuff on Twitter by myself I end up finding Russia bots stirring panic or peddling lies. So I really appreciate the Twitter posts and analysis/considered opinion alongside them.

I don’t recollect any half baked fear mongering posts form Twitter but perhaps that’s because I have the ability to understand that it’s speculation, not yet verified and not a sign that nuclear war is imminent. To be honest it’s the newspaper headlines that I’m seeing that are sensationalising and stoking panic, todays emailed headlines from the express for example include a headline about nuclear war and about a Russia exodus of planes. I’m not opening it to read the articles so I don’t know if they are more balanced but the headlines are designed to dramatise and stole fear. , I’d hate to have to rely on newspapers for the info that=is being shared in here, often before it hits the newsletters

Ukranians are being killed, so let's roll the dice on a nuclear holocaust and the deaths of billions so that we all feel better that we did something. You could equally say the same to Zelensky and tell him to accept whatever terms are offered simply to end the conflict

We may as well close the border, stop sending weapons and let him kill all the remaining Ukrainians left, though tbh that is pretty much what we have done, Putin could start killing Ukrainians in the millions and we would do nothing.

He is now boasting he will prevail in Ukraine, to a packed live stadium so much for "Peace talks"

As i ve said many times, if you are scared he will use nukes, then in the future, he or another President can attack Poland, threaten Nukes and we will back off.....

I think history will judge us very harshly on this.

Alexandra Tolstoy - Putin is a narc who acts without strategy he is spontaneous.

PaperTyger · 18/03/2022 18:08

Alexandra yes - it will but not right now - but before, from his first incusrions into Crimea and all the other places, and how he treated his own people.

@MarshaBradyo

He respects strength.

As much as this phrase makes me bristle a bit because it is so Putin centric and ego stroking if it’s about strength are you willing to go further than he is?

Let him do as he wants then.

Fact Sheet on U.S. Security Assistance for Ukraine
MARCH 16, 2022 The White House

STATEMENTS AND RELEASES

President Biden today announced an additional $800 million in security assistance to Ukraine, bringing the total U.S. security assistance committed to Ukraine to $1 billion in just the past week, and a total of $2 billion since the start of the Biden Administration. The assistance will take the form of direct transfers of equipment from the Department of Defense to the Ukrainian military to help them defend their country against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion.

The new $800 million assistance package includes:

800 Stinger anti-aircraft systems;
2,000 Javelin, 1,000 light anti-armor weapons, and 6,000 AT-4 anti-armor systems;
100 Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems;
100 grenade launchers, 5,000 rifles, 1,000 pistols, 400 machine guns, and 400 shotguns;
Over 20 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenade launcher and mortar rounds;
25,000 sets of body armor; and
25,000 helmets.
In addition to the weapons listed above, previous United States assistance committed to Ukraine includes:

Over 600 Stinger anti-aircraft systems;
Approximately 2,600 Javelin anti-armor systems;
Five Mi-17 helicopters;
Three patrol boats;
Four counter-artillery and counter-unmanned aerial system tracking radars;
Four counter-mortar radar systems;
200 grenade launchers and ammunition;
200 shotguns and 200 machine guns;
Nearly 40 million rounds of small arms ammunition and over 1 million grenade, mortar, and artillery rounds;
70 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and other vehicles;
Secure communications, electronic warfare detection systems, body armor, helmets, and other tactical gear;
Military medical equipment to support treatment and combat evacuation;
Explosive ordnance disposal and demining equipment; and
Satellite imagery and analysis capability.
In addition to the U.S.-produced short-range air defense systems the Ukrainians have been using to great effect, the United States has also identified and is helping the Ukrainians acquire additional, longer-range systems on which Ukraine’s forces are already trained, as well as additional munitions for those systems.

The United States continues to expedite the authorization and facilitation of additional assistance to Ukraine from our Allies. At least 30 countries have provided security assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. In 2022, the Department of State authorized third-party transfers of defensive equipment from more than 14 countries, a number that continues to grow as Allies and Partners increase support to Ukraine.

No he isn't, he loves chess, he plays the long game, a game we let him win.

"As much as this phrase makes me bristle a bit because it is so Putin centric and ego stroking if it’s about strength are you willing to go further than he is?"

Nope. I'm not into genocide or nuking millions.

It's not about ego stroking it's about understanding the man and standing up properly in a way he understands

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2022 18:12

Can you answer the question.. are you certain you know the limits and are you happy to go further?

I mean I get the whole this is mn not a NATO summit and people can type bolshy posts. But how certain are you

TiddyTidTwo · 18/03/2022 18:17

"Can you answer the question.. are you certain you know the limits and are you happy to go further? "

Do you think the US, UK etc are tactically inept?

If nato made the decision, Putin would be gone in 48 hours, maybe less.

Agree with this. I saw a scary headline today, I had to open it to read and it suggested that the bunker would be used for commercial offices. Not what they made the headline sound like, at all!

Can you expand on what you think would happen in this scenario

And zero risk of escalation from Putin, is that your view?

DuncinToffee · 18/03/2022 18:39

Just watched the Putin rally on the news, very surreal

TiddyTidTwo · 18/03/2022 18:51

And zero risk of escalation from Putin, is that your view?*

I don't think he would, no. End of the day he's a narcissist. He will always protect himself and his interests first.

Igotjelly · 18/03/2022 18:55

David Cameron is driving a lorry to Poland with supplies. Nothing like a face saving media opportunity 🙄

Inkanta · 18/03/2022 18:57

Yes I wasn't expecting him to be coming out of his bunker. Bet he was wearing a bullet proof vest under that coat.

Oh, ugh. Doesn't he know that it is better to give money? I am sure he could find a tenner down the back of the Chesterfield or something.
Igotjelly · 18/03/2022 19:03

Biden described his call with Xi to CNN as “having gone well” - that’s positive. He’s a man who tends to say what he sees.

Igotjelly · 18/03/2022 19:05

Also tasked their respective sides with following up in the days ahead. Also positive given that’s where any actual diplomatic activity will be happening.

That's quite reassuring.
