Have you heard of the stability-instability paradox? The theory that nuclear weapons make large-scale wars between nuclear powers less likely, but they also increase the likelihood of minor or indirect conflicts. So rogue states or actors such as Putin can use them as a shield from behind which to wage conventional war or acts of aggression. I think we've also seen it used to pursue grey-zone actions such as the one you mentioned of the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal in the UK using a chemical agent.“

@Yeahthat
How interesting. That is exactly what the present predicament seems to illustrate. Russia can do what it wants but by bit because no one with equal power can risk escalation.

Question, is the BBC news live stream suddenly in Nepali for everyone else? www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-europe-60774819

Yes how odd 🤔

mpsw · 18/03/2022 13:32

In terms of nato not acting if chem/biological weapons are used, are you comfortable watching genocide?

It's not up to NATO to act. It's a defence pact, not world police. If there were an international poitcical consensus giving a mandate for military action, then it is likely that NATO countries would be contributors to that mission

Agree, surely it’s technically the role of the UN to act but, given Russia’s seat on the security council, it’s a bit of a lame duck.
Igotjelly · 18/03/2022 13:38

Wonder what happened. Hopefully another person working in state media who chose to go rogue!

Oh how weird! Or something they don't want viewers to see, like protestors?
shreddednips · 18/03/2022 13:44

Or, with any luck, someone who doesn't fancy a McPutin Happy Meal has decided to take matters into their own hands.

MagicFox · 18/03/2022 13:51

Looks like the speech was pre-recorded and somebody screwed up with the 'live' effect. A shame, was hoping something might have happened to cancel out this gross propaganda

I was thinking, I just can't imagine Putin risking leaving his safe bunker and long table to go and talk at a rally 😆
Igotjelly · 18/03/2022 13:56

Sky, the BBC and the Guardian all seem to think it was a live event.

MagicFox · 18/03/2022 14:06

Apparently a 'server problem'. State tv showing whole speech from off now

‘Server problem’…. I have an image that Putin fell off the stage or something so they had to pan away quickly 😂

I bet the server is shitting itself.
EsmaCannonball · 18/03/2022 14:19

BBC reporting that Putin was cut off mid-sentence, the broadcast switched to a pre-record (it was being broadcast with a 30 minute delay) but the speech continued in the stadium. I thought it was rather short. Hopefully we'll find out the rest of the content.

Putin's jumper made me think we should investigate the Isles of Aran for sanctions busting.

Abra1d1 · 18/03/2022 14:24

Perhaps someone in the stadium shot him [hopeful].

EsmaCannonball · 18/03/2022 14:40

Max Seddon, the FT's Moscow bureau chief, said the speech cut out as Putin was about to say the invasion of Ukraine coincided with the birthday of Fyodor Ushakov, the patron saint of Russia's strategic nuclear fleet.

I was wondering if there was some kind of Anonymous hack but they haven't claimed anything so far.

MagicFox · 18/03/2022 14:45

First reports of the Xi-Biden talk. Don't know, all a bit wishful washy. Let's see what the US says.

Looking at the pictures in the daily Mail it looks like Putin was definitely at the rally. So not in a nuclear bunker. Maybe all the planes yesterday were bringing people in for the rally?

PestorPeston · 18/03/2022 14:59

China seemingly has gone for saving its economy not Putin's arse. The little stunt at the beginning of the week demonstrated the power of the markets.
