I know what you mean Agnes, sometimes feeling abreast of events gives us a sense of control.
But it's just so heavy and overwhelming, I think a news break is a good idea. You are still a mum, you have a child, you can't do or change anything here.
Relax and try and take your mind off this, easier said than done.

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2022 21:52

I think this too. I think he wants war with the west and will push and push until we can no longer ignore it

As a pp said if he wanted this there’s a very easy way to just start it. He doesn’t need to do the pushing part.

Chernobyl could be 48 hours away from leaking radiation, Ukraine warns:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10593867/Ukraine-warns-Chernobyl-radiation-risk-power-connection-severed.html

A rather worrying development.

@bluewanda if it helps this was released by the BBC 'The UN nuclear watchdog, the IEAE, says there's no critical threat to safety.'
holliem91 · 09/03/2022 21:53

@mavisgreen I do understand where you're coming from.

I'm no expert by any means and don't have half the knowledge most people have on here but my understanding is that is part of the reason these sanctions were put in place? So he was financially unable to invade further.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 09/03/2022 21:54

So you really think that if we went to war with Russia or the US went to war we wouldn't bomb them ?

Who wouldn't bomb who ? Nobody wants to go to war, it is destructive and massively expensive for everyone involved. Russia could end this very quickly by simply removing its forces from those areas of Ukraine it wasn't in when this invasion started. Win, win for everyone, especially the ordinary people who live in Russia and Ukraine who would like to see their male relatives alive again.

Could. Important word.

Hinckley point could also be 48 hours away from a tsunami, or Chapelcross could have all of their staff abducted by aliens

Iwasfeelingepic · 09/03/2022 21:55

I'm not a new member or anything else, I have read this thread since day one & only replied once as I don't think I have anything to add that hasn't been said already, but I was wondering one thing, all the people who don't want to NATO to do anything incase it causes WW3 etc, what do you think should happen if Putin doesn't stop at Ukraine and attacks another non NATO/EU country?
I know it's unlikely, but what if he does? Do we keep saying do nothing and let him do what he wants so he doesn't threaten to use nukes?
I don't know the answers to this, but what is everyone's red line?

AgnesWestern · 09/03/2022 21:56

I think I will take a break.

But just want to say that I don’t think he will invade any other countries after this one. I think he has struggled so much with Ukraine and probably didn’t expect such a fight back.
He likely wasn’t prepared for this.
He also won’t have the finances to fund any more invasions or impending wars due to sanctions.

I think if he had invaded Ukraine and took it quickly, he would have possibly moved on to other targets. As it is, that never happened.

Booklover3 · 09/03/2022 21:57

Of course they went after women and children Sad ffs.

I know Putin needs to be stood up to. I don’t think negotiations will work. I don’t think appeasement will work… so what’s left? No idea. I wish a sniper would take him out but that’s out because he’s mostly hiding isn’t he? Big brave man that he is Angry

Someone should buy those Polish planes and give them to Ukraine.

I think Ukraine has got to win. If they don’t then I just see too many counties pulling the “but we will nuke you” card.

AgnesWestern · 09/03/2022 21:57

@Iwasfeelingepic

The red line for me would be a NATO country, but we’re not there yet and I doubt we will be personally.
We should just continue what we’re doing now.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:59

It's ridiculous to ask in a place like this who is on Putin's side?

Who is?

Who would go to war on Putin's side?
Apparently not China?

Any ideas, question posed to anyone except

Rude toothbrush.Grin

It's tiring isn't it. But remember we are all in this together. We all know it's wrong but perhaps disagree on the strategy out of it. Talking on here is good for me as it's an incredibly intelligent, balanced conversation ❤️

What about Ireland? It's not a NATO country but it shares a land border with the UK.

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 22:00

@Iwasfeelingepic a nato country. We are sending lots and lots of aid and weapons we are actively helping but boots on the ground is a nato only thing for me. This my line

Booklover3 · 09/03/2022 22:01

@Papertyger Belarus is. Aren’t they?

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 22:01

@Iwasfeelingepic of course many countries also have certain agreements with others as well so some may get involved that nato wouldn't as far as I can tell

apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-business-europe-venezuela-caracas-daae694f5984d418627cbb3cb1885c43 White House: Venezuela has freed 2 detained Americans

The Venezuelan government has freed two jailed Americans, including an oil executive imprisoned alongside colleagues for more than four years, as it seeks to improve relations with the Biden administration amid Russia’s war with Ukraine, the White House announced Tuesday night.

Interesting.

Very, very interesting.
Wrongkindofovercoat · 09/03/2022 22:03

@Iwasfeelingepic if Russia invaded anouther EU country, then I imagine all the other EU countries would have to retaliate in the same way Nato countries would. There is a key reason for these alliances. Lots of littles combined make up something bigger than a big bully.

mavisgreen · 09/03/2022 22:04

So Poland yes because it's in NATO but Ireland no because it's not? Proximity doesn't come it to it. Just club membership.

Ijsbear · 09/03/2022 22:05

Well we do know radiation exists within Chernobyl, while no one knows about aliens! :D

Panicking about WW3 is unhelpful and a waste of time and energy.

Putin is not after self-destruction, he's probably after a Soviet state that's self-contained and includes the old Eastern Block countries. And general causing strife and trouble-making because that's what he gets off on.

He's getting closer to China but the Chinese's greatest trade is still with the West. Despite the deterioration in relations between China and the West under Trump (who may well have been influenced, shall we say, by Russian money), China is still not going to lightly throw out that trade partnership.

Nothing, unfortunately, is going to stop the Ukrainians suffering because Putin's form of going to war deliberately targets civilians and vulnerable people in order to break the invaded country's spirit. He is a master of pyschological warfare with the tools of deception, fear and desperation.

Believing his promises is futile because he has no value for them. The only value, as far as he is concerned, is in how far he can get other people to believe him so that he can carry right on with what he's doing.

Whatever form of peace is achieved sooner or later he will keep on trying to cause trouble. I think the only thing that will stop him is by standing up to him and being aware of what he's doing by looking at his actions rather than his words. Presenting a united front towards him and no softness, no give because he sees softness as a weakness and good faith as something to be used to further his ends.

Panic is pointless and actually plays more into his hands than keeping calm.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 22:07

Belarus is quite a poor Putin puppet place though.
I haven't looked up stats but I can't imagine Putin + Belarus would be much to worry about?
It seems to me that China is more keen on appeasing Putin than courting the West.

But let's say China wouldn't join Putin , Syria might, if they could afford to, but again hardly something to worry about.

Who else?

ClaudineClare · 09/03/2022 22:07

Could he get as far as Ireland without straying into a NATO country?

Iwasfeelingepic · 09/03/2022 22:08

Thanks for the answers elephant & Agnes.
I don't think he is capable of invading another country, but it was more of a what if question.
Hope you get the break you need Agnes.Flowers
