How people could rub shoulders with a man that released neuro-toxins on civilian populations is beyond me

Nigel Farage : 'Hold my pint' Hmm

@oakleaffy

Why the heck isn't Putin been charged with War Crimes against Humanity? Is it because he is ''Untouchable'' or unreachable?
Who is going to go and arrest him?
elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 21:22

Also interesting that those baying for war have only commented on this thread and have no previous posts...

FancifulFeathers · 09/03/2022 21:24

Ukraine gave up their nuclear because they were promised they would be protected and surprise surprise here we are

Wrongkindofovercoat · 09/03/2022 21:25

Yes because China would not get a say! They have already said that if we could involved their would be nuclear implications

I didn't realise that they had explicity said that, do you have a link ? It seems a bit of U-turn from their usual pragmatic approach, if Russia decides to throw its teddy out of the cot because a small land grab isn't going its way and go full on nuclear, China have said they will support Russia with further nuclear weapons ?

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 21:26

@Wrongkindofovercoat yep here you go

'MOSCOW, March 2 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that if a third World War were to take place, it would involve nuclear weapons and be destructive, the RIA news agency reported.'

Oh for god's sake! Absolutely nobody is baying for war. You are 100% entitled to be as selfish as you like and not care about hospital bombings etc because they're happening far away but other people may have a touch more compassion and humanity than you. Doesn't mean they're war hungry bots.
Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:27

I think before that point, but after that point really set's the tone.

I'm starting to wonder if the world won't be divided into democratic and non.

Don't all these issues seem to stem from dictators and corrupt places?

Macabre question.
In the fast moving theatre of war, how on earth can they count bodies? And how can it be accurate with a mobiles crematory moving with themConfused

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 21:27

@mavisgreen read thread 10 last night where the tone was completely different to this evening.

AgnesWestern · 09/03/2022 21:29

@elephantmarchingin

I feel the same as you. I don’t see how fighting fire with fire will help anyone.
It’ll lead to more babies being killed and more hospitals/orphanages and the like being destroyed.

FacebookPhotos · 09/03/2022 21:29

Why the heck isn't Putin been charged with War Crimes against Humanity?

Because the victors decide who gets charged with war crimes. And this war hasn’t been won or lost yet. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were arguably war crimes. USA (with UK consent) targeted and killed over a hundred thousand civilians with just two bombs.

My novice understanding is that if the missile/bomb was dropped it would have the same effect as a small nuclear weapon.

The immediate effect may be the same (I’m not a weapons expert) but not the aftermath. If you release a nuclear weapon you not only kill lots of people in the initial blast, you expose many more to dangerously high levels of radiation. Which (longer term) causes cancers, leukaemia, birth defects.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:30

" today they are desperate for it" Confused

I'm not seeing any posts desperate for ww3.

I don’t think it’s pp being selfish. It’s more a question of how certain you are re what Putin would do. If he did escalate we’d all be affected. Including those who’ve fled already, and well, everyone.

So people thinking we should intervene directly must be more certain he won’t escalate.

AgnesWestern · 09/03/2022 21:30

@elephantmarchingin nobody is thinking of the bigger picture here. Escalation will lead to more horror, involving more countries. And Ukraine will still be burning.

Yes. The more atrocious the actions of the Russians, the more people will feel that a line has been crossed.

bluewanda · 09/03/2022 21:31

Chernobyl could be 48 hours away from leaking radiation, Ukraine warns:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10593867/Ukraine-warns-Chernobyl-radiation-risk-power-connection-severed.html

A rather worrying development.

MOSCOW, March 2 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that if a third World War were to take place, it would involve nuclear weapons and be destructive, the RIA news agency reported.'

Is it just me or does that snippet not include anything about China supporting Russia in wiping out a good portion of its global export market ?

It's not just you. It doesn't, they haven't.
elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 21:33

@mavisgreen so how are we going to help Ukraine if we are at war? Because all aid will stop, refugees will halt, if anything that gives the green light for methods to get darker towards Ukraine and other eastern countries. So how does it help?

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2022 21:33

@Roussette

Red That is encouraging if I can dare say that. I'd go with the middle figures maybe...
I do think the US figures are on the low side and done very conservatively. I find them hard to believe.

The European figure is close to the Ukrainian one, but the Ukrainian one is if anything is LOWER than the European one, because its KIA + wounded. The European one is KIA only.

You would expect the number of wounded to be more than KIA. A figure of 9000 KIA therefore would be suggestive of more than 12000 casualties. You'd have to go with the lower estimate of 7000 of the European figure to be around the Ukrainian figure.

It surprises me that the European intelligence is going this high tbh. I would have thought it to be more cautious, unless they a) are also trying to inflate numbers to support Ukraine or b) they know something substantially more than the US. So I'm finding it hard to be too confident of the European numbers either. a) seems logical b) well I do have thoughts about this: either they've got something from the Russian end or they are able to better verify what the Ukrainians are saying with a certain degree of confidence from another source...

I think I would probably be inclined to say its between the US and the European/Ukraine number which is likely about the same for that reason.

But for me the whole thing just opens more questions than it answers.

I didn't say China said it. I said they won't have a choice?
TiddyTidTwo · 09/03/2022 21:34

Me neither. I am seeing a turn toward intervention due to the ongoing and worsening atrocities

Which is palatable as they are Ukrainian babies, no? Not on our doorstep!

holliem91 · 09/03/2022 21:34

@mavisgreen I don't think anyone is any less compassionate in regards to anything. It is a fact that NATO intervention or even if just the US get involved will result in much more deaths.

What we're seeing in Ukraine is heartbreaking and I've cried my eyes out thinking about those poor children sleeping on rubble/loosing their parents/dying every day but at the moment the alternative to that is that millions possibly even billions more die.

It is also a very tomorrow is Thursday statement, or no shit Sherlock as is often said round here when some daft bugger states the bleeding obvious.
