Phil Stewart @phildstewart
BREAKING - Pentagon rules out transfer of combat aircraft for Ukraine, assesses it would be a "high risk" move that could escalate tensions with Russia

Damir Marusic @dmarusic
Interesting risk tolerance disparity with Britain, which is not only sending portable thermobaric antiaircraft batteries—“StarStreak”—but is bragging about it.

Also interesting...

Sittinginthesand · 09/03/2022 21:00

Head - no, I’m saying that when Putin invaded Crimea there was little resistance and we pretty much ignored it. Putin totally got away with it. IF that had happened again it would, as I said, have quickly been forgotten. But the Ukrainians fought back, so Russia started their attacks on civilians and this time we (the west) imposed sanctions to support the brave resistance of Ukraine.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:00

Does anyone think his family should be expelled and sent back to Russia if they are still talking to him?

I find the thought of one daughter living it up in Monaco and his mistress holed up in Switzerland hard to stomach.
I'm sure I read another worked in the EU?

BeyondPurpleTulips · 09/03/2022 21:00

Someone mentioned upthread that it was now confirmed that thermobaric weapons had definite,y been used, but I can't see that anywhere. Could I have a link please?

Last I saw it was speculated, but not definite

TiddyTidTwo · 09/03/2022 21:01

TiddyTidTwo, do you not think your military background is influencing your view here. I am not from that background and I don't agree.

Hands up it definitely influences me and I respect those that don't agree too.

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 21:01

There is a lot of we should get involved and putin wouldn't really do this or he wouldn't actually do that.

Today we watch him bomb a maternity hospital.

He can and will do his threats. We are lucky to be away from it but will everyone be so happy when your DP have to go off and fight, your sons?

Again when we get that 4 min warning will we go ah well it was worth it.

We need to keep level headed and continue supplying aid to Ukraine but that, unfortunately, is all we can do whilst protecting the rest of the world

Roussette · 09/03/2022 21:02

Red That is encouraging if I can dare say that. I'd go with the middle figures maybe...

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 09/03/2022 21:02

@ClaudineClare

I wonder how much more we can all stomach before the public's attitude turns to pro-war with Russia. I think that is partly Putin's aim with these war crimes? Make it impossible for the West to keep its face turned away,

I am a mostly a pacifist, but my god I want these bastards to pay for what they are doing.

Absolutely agree with this. I think Putin is either trying to show the West up and prove to Ukraine that we are not a worthy ally or trying to pick a fight with us and pressing all the buttons.
ENoeuf · 09/03/2022 21:02

Question Time was interesting. I didn’t know about Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons and now expecting to be protected . The Ukrainian representative seemed quite firm and disappointed.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:04

I don't follow the logic of those two twitter comparisons.
The USA has already sent ton's of lethal aid and has just announced a staggering aid package for which half will be used to support the fight.

Guardian quotes MoD that says Russian MoD has confirmed its use of a thermobaric weapon in Ukraine.

It's been confirmed by the Russian MOD. Reports in the Guardian, Sky News, and a few others so far.
Igotjelly · 09/03/2022 21:07

I read those reports as confirming that the weapons systems had been deployed, not that the actual bombs had been used.

oakleaffy · 09/03/2022 21:07

@BeyondPurpleTulips
Re Putin and his War Crimes..Yes, I see how tricky that might be.
Putin's probably squirrelled himself away somewhere safe surrounded by ''Da'' Men .
It's beyond appalling that he is getting away with these War Crimes.

Ijsbear · 09/03/2022 21:08

@TheSillyMastiff I'm sorry for the loss of your husband.

Yes, quite. This has conveniently been forgotten.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:09

Elephant, at the same time, Putin is being reckless with massive nuclear power points within Ukraine.

Do we think Putin's nuclear experts are in there?
Will he rig it and threaten to blow it unless we all give him his money back? Cede not only Ukraine but all the other countries he apparently wants?

Nuclear reactors would be too close to Russia
HarlanPepper · 09/03/2022 21:11

@Igotjelly that is a distinction I hadn't picked up on! thank you.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 09/03/2022 21:11

@elephantmarchingin Do you think China will allow him to do that ? Wipe out much of their market in one foul swoop ? I know they are pragmatists and long gamers, but if Russia hits us and the US, the repercussions will be felt by them for a long time and make Evergrande look like an inconsequential blip.

TheSillyMastiff · 09/03/2022 21:12

Thermobaric rockets have been used, but not the bombs.

The rocket is still dreadful and it's collateral damage from indirect and explosive force is still barbaric and inhumane, but it's not the missile.

My novice understanding is that if the missile/bomb was dropped it would have the same effect as a small nuclear weapon.

Happy to be corrected though.

Papertyger · 09/03/2022 21:12

He was happily welcomed as a player after chemically bombing Syria.
There have been many points where he should never been allowed to set foot in the democratic world.

Agreed. How people could rub shoulders with a man that released neuro-toxins on civilian populations is beyond me. He should have been exciled at that point in time.

Yes because China would not get a say! They have already said that if we could involved their would be nuclear implications.

It's a very interesting shift from the threads last night where mostly everyone was very set against NATO involvement to today where majority are desperate for it.

This hospital bombing is no different from the ones that take place across the world it's a sad reality of war. How is bringing more countries into it, so more hospitals bombed going to help I ask?

We should be sending as much aid as possible to help but us being involved in war will not help Ukraine
