Can anyone summarise what was said, I'm in work getting ready to leave and couldn't watch/listen to it

GallopingHighRoad · 08/03/2022 17:35

@EsmaCannonball

Don't tell me, the Russians are going to launch chemical/biological attacks in Kyiv and Odessa and claim the Ukrainians did it to themselves or a Ukrainian missile hit one of their own laboratories. Sounds about right.
Yes. It has (in my view) always been likely that chemical weapons will be used. Nuclear, no. This will be what Putin does next.

Ah, NBC suits - do they still issue them ?

Let's hope that the people supposed to be making the chemicals are as corrupt and incompetent as the rest of the military suppliers seem to be. Maybe Salisbury was all they could muster ?

I struggled to hear with the simultaneous translation until the beeb sorted the levels out. He went through events day by day, and ended up echoing Churchill and Shakespeare.

Standing ovations at beginning and end.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/03/2022 17:45
@RobotValkyrie What strikes me with that logic is how similar it is to the "smaller scale" blame-the-victim logic of domestic abusers and their apologists: "look what you've made me do!"

I've been saying exactly the same thing to dh: that Putin's justification is very much along the lines of a domestic abuser (both emotional and physical). "Look what you made me do." "It's your fault that I had to hit you." Complete with the gaslighting "I know you love me." "We belong together." ....and more ominously, "You can never leave me." Sad
Alexandra Tolstoy was saying this morning that she thinks Putin has NPD.

What does anyone else think about the price by the Jerusalem reporter about peace talks?

EsmaCannonball · 08/03/2022 17:45

If all this ends, however it ends, with Putin still in power, how do people see the rest of the world's relationship with Russia going forward? Although I'm too young to have lived through events like the Cuban Missile Crisis, this feels potentially more hostile than the Cold war. It will be like having to share a house with someone who killed your sister and got away with it.

Such a simple gesture means so much. Brought a lump to my throat.

One teaspoon of novichok could have killed 80% of the population of Salisbury. (Although how it would have to be distributed for that to be achieved I have no idea. The water supply?)
WeAreTheHeroes · 08/03/2022 17:56

The power of human kindness in all of this is one thing that gives me hope.

To be fair on the chemical weapons issue, the US is one of the few countries which has used them in combat.

Yes I realise how weird those two statements are in one post. I was reminded by DP not to let my bias towards Ukraine influence my judgement on this kind of thing.

Mcdonalds is closing its 850 Russian restaurants.

Sunnierdays · 08/03/2022 18:01

@Leafblowing yesterday it was a former head of security for Trump’s presidency !! Maybe shouldn’t be too worried about that one !! Today there was a programme on the BBC 4 pm with a lot of dominant political figures who nearly all agreed, along with almost half the audience !!
Got to be honest with all these sanctions I think it’s going to kick off anyway Confused

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 18:02

Looks like Russians are just about in Kyiv according to BBC News. I guess the next few days are going to be rough.

strawberriesarenot · 08/03/2022 18:12

Is it significant (or true) that Zelensky is no longer asking for NATO membership?

Earlier today, I read he was talking about compromise re Crimea also, but his HoC speech doesn't sound like it at all.

Chloemol · 08/03/2022 18:16

Not sure if this has been covered but why are planes to Moscow and other Russian cities still flying over Poland? Have they not closed their airspace to Russia bound traffic? Or only Aeroflot

Surely all countries should stop allowing flights to Russia over their air space?

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/03/2022 18:17

It's a crucial time for Ukraine against Russia. He needs to bolster all those fighting and of course that message will go around the world.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/03/2022 18:19

It's my understanding that Russian airlines are banned from EU airspace and Russia has retaliated in kind. Airlines of other countries are still operating in and out. To be fair there are people in Russia whose options for getting out are reducing.

News UK punishes Russia by oil ban

or punishes their own people by high rise on oil prices.
Again with just high talks but no talking about people who are struggling to survive winter or
the people on the brink to become homeless and can not afford to travel to go to work to earn because it will not be feasible to them anymore.
More homeless, more job less people = children without food or shelter
UK get his oil from US result who get benefit out of it -- is US.
who suffer ----- UK people

AuldAlliance · 08/03/2022 18:27

Has the gvmt made any statements about measures they intend to put in place to try and offset the price rises caused by the war in a country where many are already suffering from hikes in energy costs? I haven't seen any, but may have missed them.

There's no link in your post, so it's hard to put your comments in context.

Oil prices are set globally by supply and demand. Any American oil bought by the UK would just be sold domestically or to another country, so there's no special benefit to the US for selling it to the UK.
