The US is currently a net importer of oil. So not sure how they are going to make up the global shortfall.
Oil cost more in 1980 than it does today. It cost an awful lot more in 2008.

Shuuu · 08/03/2022 18:42

sorry if it’s been covered. Has anyone seen reports of Zelensky no longer wanting to join NATO?

Massively speed up visa requirements, but not waive.

From the BBC re oil import sanctions

UK to phase out Russian oil
The UK government is to phase out Russian oil and oil products by the end of 2022.

This transition period will give the market, businesses and supply chains more than enough time to replace Russian imports – which make up 8% of UK demand, it said.

The UK is less reliant on Russian fossil fuels than many European countries. But Russian supplies still make up 8% of overrall imports into the UK, and 18% of UK diesel comes from Russia

Wrongkindofovercoat · 08/03/2022 18:48

@Saku Putin was threatening to cut off the supply anyway, so we have just saved him the trouble Smile

True. So we need to sort out other options

We're not unless production ramps up substantially. Oil exports and imports are often done because ocean shipping is cheaper than land transportation or because a refinery needs a specific grade of crude oil that's easier to get abroad.

It used to be illegal to export American oil, which made no sense at all.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/03/2022 19:00

Just watched the whole broadcast and cried my eyes out. I am not normally given to emotional outbursts like this, but I just felt overwhelmed by it all.

PestorPeston · 08/03/2022 19:03

The US uses a big 20% of global production, we use less than 2%.
We really do need to cut our reliance on oil, the North Sea production has a fairly limited time left.

It would also be rather good for the environment www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg2

Robert Peston @Peston
Poland not only hands over all its MiG fighters to the US for transfer to the Ukraine airforce but calls on all other countries with comparable jets to also transfer them. This is the kind of western unity that was incredibly rare before Putin invaded Ukraine

TheSillyMastiff · 08/03/2022 19:06

Evening all, I am so sorry I'm so lost on these threads I never caught up from thread 9 and now this one so I'm just going to jump in. Apologies.

Today I meet with 3 MP's virtually as part of my job and to celebrate international women's Day. As I know these MP's rather well I asked them all as part of international women's Day, did they think the UK Government was doing enough to support women and their children fleeing war.

Some lively conversation, bit overwhelming talk that more needs to be done and one will present my written statement to PMQT

Ijsbear · 08/03/2022 19:07

Does anyone have any reliable information on if/how far the sanctions are biting and how the majority of the Russian people are reacting to the situation at this moment?

PestorPeston · 08/03/2022 19:07

There was certainly a huge amount of F-15 training going on today. They are so bloody noisy.

Hmm. More stalling?

PestorPeston · 08/03/2022 19:14

No it is not us fecked @elephantmarchingin we and Poland are allowed to sell Ukraine used aircraft. We can also sell them guns, food and ammunition.

PestorPeston · 08/03/2022 19:15

Russia seems to come up with as many non observed cease fires as it does reasons for invasion.
Any bets on tomorrows reason for the invasion, to save Chernobyl from Nazis maybe?

I just read this on the BBC website

How are sanctions affecting Russians?
Will Vernon

BBC News, Moscow

A number of luxury brands have suspended operations in Russia because of the invasion of UkraineImage caption: A number of luxury brands have suspended operations in Russia because of the invasion of Ukraine
Here in Moscow, the mood is sombre amongst many Russians.

The invasion of Ukraine – which the Kremlin insists should be called a ‘special military operation’ – has resulted in crippling Western sanctions which are hitting the economy hard.

The impact on ordinary Russians is already being felt.

Russia’s currency, the ruble, has crashed, and prices for a whole range of goods and services are rising fast - including travelling abroad.

Foreign travel itself is now much harder – the US, EU and others have closed their airspace to Russian aircraft. Thousands of young, educated Russians have already left the country.

Several large Russian supermarkets are limiting the number of basic goods people can buy at one time. In one shop I saw a notice stating: 'Only one 5kg bag of sugar per person'. The government says this is to limit black market dealing and inflation.

The list of Western companies pulling out of Russia grows ever longer. In shopping centres in central Moscow, many Western shops are shuttered; others cannot accept card payments.

Before the invasion, Moscow was one of the most technologically advanced and well-connected cities in the world – with a first-class system of streaming services, online payments, tech and digital services. Using cash was rare. But with companies such as Apple, Visa and Netflix curtailing or shutting down in Russia, these services are grinding to a halt.

Didn't putin specifically say if Anyone provided planes it would be considered an act of war

There's limitations on how much you can buy of certain things in supermarkets to stop panic buying and then price gouging so I'm guessing that will go the same way as it did in the UK pretty quickly.

Lots of people will have already lost jobs as the direct result of western brands leaving.

Save the Ukrainian Zoo animals that the Americans have got aliens to target?

What, another one?

By this stage if there really was a ceasefire, the poor damn inhabitants would be too disbelieving to move.
