How many pizzas would you have ordered?

Following a tense situation this evening I though I'd consult the hive mind.

Friday night dinner for 6 adults - how much would you expect you'd need to order?

(Dominoes/Pizza Hut style pizza)

OP posts:
roarfeckingroarr · 05/03/2022 12:09

That's absolutely nuts. What's the context - travelling to see parents / ILs?

I would've ordered 3 or 4 large with a few sides and made a salad to go with

Comedycook · 05/03/2022 12:11

This thread reminds me of my sil. One supermarket pizza between three adults and two children. I was starving! She doesn't eat much so has no idea what other people want food wise.

mydogisthebest · 05/03/2022 12:26

@liveforsummer

I can assure you we are both big eaters. We are both overweight although not massively.

Just not big eaters of pizza then

Because it is so filling (and usually so greasy)

My SIL too.
She came to visit, I offered to cook but she insisted on buying us a Chinese takeaway.
She arrived with a single portion of spring rolls and a bag of prawn crackers for 4 of us.

mydogisthebest · 05/03/2022 12:28

So those of you who make your own pizzas, do you make one for each person?

It would never cross my mind to make 2 for me and DH.

Makes you weep doesn't it?!
peboh · 05/03/2022 12:33

Probably 3/4 large pizzas, a couple garlic breads and then a ton of sides.
When we get a takeaway it's a treat, so we like to indulge ... Don't usually eat much the next day as so stuffed so I'm never worried about the calories like some of MN.

It wouldn't cross your mind to make 2 pizzas? But there's 2 of you? Do you make one sandwich? If nothing else do you not like different toppings? I don't understand the concept of one each being so bizarre to you, and the beauty of homemade is you can make the pizzas whatever size you want

LottyD32 · 05/03/2022 13:20

@liveforsummer

If a half pizza is a struggle and a quarter is the norm for a takeaway you really aren't big eaters however many times you say it. My 8 year old dd can polish off more than a quarter with ease along with sides (and no she's not one of the childhood obesity candidates)
A quarter is 2 slices Confused

I can eat a whole frozen pizza to myself. I don't know about ones they make up for you in the supermarket, we don't get those.

If we order we get an 18" and depending on how hungry drunk I can eat half.

Does no one say anything?

@notacooldad

We eat in Pizza hut many times a year and have never seen people share pizzas If course you can ask to share a pizza. I've just ask 'for 1 pizza between us and 2 plates please' no problem.
Well yes I cant eat much dessert, and I usually ask for two spoons, but it's rare in a pizza place to share a pizza. Not unheard of but rare.

I haven't had a pizza hut or domino's pizza for years so my last post assumed my local pizza places are similar. I stand by 6 pizzas and sides, any leftovers for following day. Further, each person chooses and has their preferred pizza.

FWIW I can only eat about half a large pizza, a whole Chinese and hungry an hour later, a whole curry with rice and chips.

RumJerrySailorRum · 05/03/2022 13:30

I used to quite like a domino pizza when they had goats cheese as an option and those little sweet red pepper thingies on an Italian base but I think I must have actually made it up as they haven't done it for ages.

Also, we go for the thin bases when we do, not as minging as the standard base!

As for pizza size, depends how hungry we DH is are. Sometimes we get a large each, sometimes a medium each. No point mixing up the sizes otherwise you don't get the deals.

I never eat it all and have it the next day.

chesirecat99 · 05/03/2022 13:38

I may be biased as I am not a pizza lover so a couple of slices are more than enough for me I would almost rather be hungry... but 2 medium pizzas divided by 5 is more pizza per person than a personal pizza each (area of a 7" pizza is 38.5 square inches, area of an 11.5" pizza is 103 square inches so 2 medium pizzas shared between 5 is 41 square inches each).

No judgement against anyone who wants to pig out on a large pizza to themselves as a treat or eat cold congealed cheese for breakfast but surely a personal pizza and a slice of garlic bread is an average meal size (both in portion size and calories) compared to how much you would normally eat of other dishes? I would have thought it was more than enough for dinner for any adult who isn't feeding another human being, an Olympic athlete or spent the day working the coalface?

MimiBaker · 05/03/2022 13:39

I ordered a Dominos a while back but the toppings were miniscule. Have they improved?

I'm my world (and also that of any pizza restaurant I've ever been to) a 7'' pizza is on the Childrens menu

Do let us know that you are being well fed for the rest of your stay.

FaceLikeASlappedAss · 05/03/2022 13:56

Me and dh eat a whole large dominos each. I don't care on the calories. I enjoy it.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 05/03/2022 14:12

I know mumsnet hates "penis portions" but my DH would definitely eat a whole pizza no matter how big it was and so would any other man I know. So assuming for 6 people half are men, I'd get 6 to be on the safe side! Plus a few sides.

LottyD32 · 05/03/2022 14:23

@Lamerexo

For me I just pick off the toppings and eat those by themselves, far too filling for me and I am severely bloated after ! All that grease I suppose. Then I am full up until dinner the next day
Why do people post things like this? Surely they know how ridiculous they sound?!

No, we like the same topping. It is far easier and quicker to make one. I make it the size of my pizza pan which is about the size of a large pizza from a takeaway.

On the rare occasion we go to Pizza Hut we share a pizza. We would order a pizza each in Pizza Express but their pizzas are not very big (I still usually really struggle to eat a whole one)

I really don't see sandwiches as being anything like pizza.

Sadly no. In my family, we'd literally be like "oi, is this it?" But in dh family, they are overly polite with each other!

Yep we make one each. We like different toppings so it's easier to make our own and means mine doesn't have to be an inch deep in hot sauce
EeeICouldRipATissue · 05/03/2022 14:57

3 pizzas for 6 adults?!
As if, love these kind of threads lol
It'd be a pizza per person in this house, half a pizza each would lead to not enough, someone still hangry or fighting over the last piece 😂

chesirecat99 · 05/03/2022 15:04

I'm pretty ancient @liveforsummer but when Pizza Hut opened in the UK their individual small pizza was 7" and the larger sizes were all sold as "for sharing". Dominos give the "serving size" of their large and medium pizzas as 3 slices. TBF a Dominos 7" personal pizza is 500-700 calories, the recommended amount for lunch and dinner, so should be adequate for normal day to day evening meal. Fine if you want to eat more on a special occasion or when eating out but I bet most of the people who are saying they order a large pizza for themselves wouldn't normally eat 1800+ calories for dinner in one sitting. The average adult human stomach expands to hold 0.9, imagine trying to stuff a large pizza into a 1l water bottle. It is a lot of food...

I would always ask my guests to order whatever they want but I don't think it's necessarily stingy to serve everyone the correct adult portion size, which is what OP's FIL did. It should have been an adequate sized meal for everyone other than, possibly, BFing OP.

I do think that it has become the cultural norm to eat huge restaurant portion sizes of pizza at home even though it is more of a day to day food now. We don't do that so much with other foods eg many restaurants would serve half a chicken as a portion but how many people would serve/eat that at home normally?
