Russia puts its nuclear deterrent on high alert

Libertybear80 · 27/02/2022 14:04

Does anyone know what that actually means? Is he threatening nuclear war?

OP posts:
Fakenamefornow · 27/02/2022 14:27

I read that the Russian central bank has urged calm, fearing a run on the banks. I can't help thinking it would be a good thing if this happened, although I know Putin would just close the banks. As I understand it, most Russian people don't want this war, if true and we extrapolate from that it means most of the military and police don't want it either.

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2022 14:28

Liz Truss is a fucking idiot, but let's be honest, she is not the problem here.

LemonViolet · 27/02/2022 14:28

Maybe the special vs high alert is a translation issue

Imabouttoexplode · 27/02/2022 14:28

@GrandRapids

Liz Truss needs to shut the fuck up
She really does. What an ill thought out, pointless comment to make.
Lampface · 27/02/2022 14:28

Where would the nuclear weapons hit if they were launched?

hilbil21 · 27/02/2022 14:28

I'm really trying not to be scared but I live a few miles from Faslane naval base. Would there be any point in me travelling to stay with family in England or if he uses nuclear weapons is that basically the end for all of us? (Sorry to be so downbeat)

Lampface · 27/02/2022 14:30

Twitter says, 'Highest level of alert' in their overview. twitter.com/i/events/1483255084750282753

mynameiscalypso · 27/02/2022 14:30

It was an entirely predictable move in response to last night's sanctions, particularly in the central bank. That doesn't mean it's not a bad thing but it's not a surprise at all.

If he fires one on the UK there really isn't anywhere to hide
Magicmelodies21 · 27/02/2022 14:30

I am absolutely scared stiff , feel like I am sitting on a time bomb !! Hope it’s all words!! I can’t look at my kids I am so upset !!

Grumpsy · 27/02/2022 14:30

@Cherrysherbet he has gone insane. He needs one of his own to assassinate him so he doesn’t become a martyr

There isn’t any point in panicking though, there’s nothing we can do if he does push a button. In all millions fear mongering is what he is after, rather than intent to follow through with his threat.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/02/2022 14:30

It's "режим готовности", state of readiness in Russian.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 14:30

This whole situation is worrying and I understand people are frightened but I really think some balance and perspective is needed here.

The very fact Putin is threatening this shows he isn't serious. Everyone is reacting exactly how he banked on them reacting, by panicking and saying "oooh, maybe we should let him have what he wants, we don't want to be nuked". That is exactly what he is counting on.

Even if you go with the theory that he's stone cold nuts and wants to take the world out with him if he loses, please also try to remember that there are people around him who will have absolutely no interest whatsoever in being nuked and will not allow him to press that button.

I totally understand the fear, but this panic is what he's banking on and that's why he said it.

I would go up the country if you're planning on going anywhere. I just found a cold war nuclear map and it looks like England would be hit badly.

Feeling very grateful to be way up in north Aberdeenshire right now.

Chestofdraws · 27/02/2022 14:31

He isn’t going to strike the uk for goodness sake.

LemonViolet · 27/02/2022 14:31

This link is to the video of what Liz Truss actually said. You may as well be mad at Sophie Raworth for asking the question and pressing her on it. FWIW I don’t disagree that Truss is an idiot generally but I actually felt a smidgen of respect for her response on this question tbh, and the only person responsible Putin’s action is Putin.

^ that exactly.

Also the wording itself sounds terrifying but is in fact just normal. Nukes are always in a state of high readiness. That's the point of them..

Nidan2Sandan · 27/02/2022 14:32

Peace talks will be starting near the Belarus border, and Belarus president has said no missiles etc will launch from their land during this.

I am fearful that Putin will not negotiate, he will demand and Ukraine rightfully wont acquiesce. We can hope that some middle ground will be found.

Belarus and Chechnya need taking to task for supporting Putin in this as well though. If only the West could get China inside, that really would cut the head off Putins beast.

MidnightMeltdown · 27/02/2022 14:32

This is worrying. He's starting to get desperate, and who knows what a desperate Putin will do in order to avoid the shame of losing.

I don't know much about nuclear weapons in terms of how far they can travel, or how close to a country you have to be in order to launch them, but I imagine that if it did happen, the USA would be his top target as they are strongest in NATO.

Exactly

Henlie · 27/02/2022 14:32

Well if there was any doubt in peoples minds before as to whether the lunatics were running the asylum there surely isn’t now…..😐

For Russia to get out of this sorry mess there needs to be a military coup. Here’s hoping 🤞

hilbil21 · 27/02/2022 14:32

@marieantoinehairnet Thank you. That almost makes me feel "better" somehow. As in there's nothing I can do to help myself.

OhWhyNot · 27/02/2022 14:32

I agree it’s no surprise

Of course many feel scared but we are not the target of his anger let’s try and keep that in mind he wants Ukraine (and probably other countries around Russia) not the UK

At times news really doesn’t need to be reported and is often held back I think this is one of those times

I really don't think anyone can guess what goes on in that tiny mind
Pandai · 27/02/2022 14:33

I think some people on here would benefit from avoiding the news for a few days.
