If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

Great post thank you.

As for arseholes and their paracetamol, I'm darn sure it would still work a decade later, sell by dates are arbitrary on that kind of thing.

Ukrainian people with mock wooden guns makes me want to sob. Refugees very welcome here (rural area, hopefully I live near Xmas personage Hmm)

@roarfeckingroarr

Not agreeing with *@WorstXmasEver* but I think when you compare numbers of refugees taken in by countries you should look at numbers relative to square metres of liveable space in said country. Germany, France, not to mention Middle Eastern countries are vast compared to the UK
And…?

Do you know how many people from Syria Germany took in 2015/2016? Have a quick google.

User135644 · 13/02/2022 09:29
@WorstXmasEver we are the dumping ground of the world?

Ignorance shining through here.

Go and check how many refugees / asylum seekers U.K. takes compared to other countries.
We're a small island, why would we take as many as much larger countries?

Letsleepingcats · 13/02/2022 09:29

roarfeckingroarr

Germany? Vast? Really?

Isntisironic1 · 13/02/2022 09:34

Putin has made no secret of the fact he is willing to use nuclear warfare, I’m pretty sure the russian subs and warships are still lingering off the coast of Ireland (I believe the planned training off the coast of Ireland didn’t go ahead but they have not yet arrived back in their native waters. Russian aircraft also spotted in Ireland’s airspace.
It’s no fluke that American fighter jets have been arriving in the uk since last year.
It’s not oil, petrol and grocery shortages nor cyber attacks we should be concerned about

ilikeyourdognotyou · 13/02/2022 09:35

Why mention racism when Ukraine is a white nation?

Oh I think the casual racism comment was absolutely justified, you don't need to start getting specific about skin tones.

Houseofvelour · 13/02/2022 09:35

It's all very worrying. My heart breaks for the Ukrainian people.

I’m not so sure. Unfortunately, there are an awful lot of very stupid people who believe the sort of rubbish he/she spouts.

FrancescaContini · 13/02/2022 09:36

The posters already querying/fearing/quibbling about people from the Ukraine needing to seek refuge in the UK are appallingly ignorant. Do you not even try to imagine their fear and horror, and how very painful and traumatic it is for people - you know, people like you and me, with homes, jobs, families, roots, dreams, aspirations, bank accounts, clothes, passports - to have to leave not knowing if they will ever be able to return to their homes?

MadameFantabulosa · 13/02/2022 09:36

Ukrainian refugees are surely more likely to head to Poland than U.K. as a) it’s right next door and b) the languages are pretty much mutually comprehensible. Why schlep all the way across Europe to the U.K.?

Schlep…what an insulting and distasteful word to use to describe the often perilous journeys that many refugees are forced to undertake.

@User0458832

Energy prices so therefore most other things will go up, NHS could be vulnerable to cyber attack, likewise banks and other infrastructure.
Yep. Make sure you have some old fashioned board games, books and activity books in, in case of internet disruption.

Along with non mains lighting. I have camping kit. Lights and camping stove plus blankets. In case of power disruption.

Keep petrol topped up in the car, in case of fuel disruption.

A week's extra food and bottled water, in case of food supply / water supply disruption.

Enough cash to buy essentials for a week.

Refugees are to be expected, do you expect them to stay? Would you stay in their situation?

loobylou10 · 13/02/2022 09:44

@WorstXmasEver - that was you by the way!

@RedRoseRay

I’ve been watching series 3 of Warship:Life at Sea on channel 5. It’s about life on a Royal Navy frigate and there’s been a lot of tension with Russian ships. One of the episodes focussed on keeping the Russian ships away from our communication cables under the arctic circle. If these were damaged by the Russians the UK would be without communication with the outside world (no WiFi etc) for weeks. It’d be devastating to our country. I thought we relied on satellites but apparently we don’t. It’s an interesting watch especially with the Ukraine situation at the moment.
That's really interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Does all communications mean 4G and 5G too? Was just thinking, could I tether my phone to my laptop and use the internet that way to work? If broadband goes down.

Hope someone more technical than me pops along 😀

Don't be ridiculous.
Isntisironic1 · 13/02/2022 10:04

@FourTeaFallOut pardon? How is what I wrote ridiculous?

Kshhuxnxk · 13/02/2022 10:07

Food and petrol shortages is my guess along with limits on energy usage. What a lot of drama llamas MN has. The only reason shortages will happen is because you lot wind yourself up into such a frenzy you start panic buying. God get a hobby!

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 10:08

A Ukrainian man on the telly was asked how people are feeling and what the mood is in Ukraine- he said there is calm, no panic. Then he said:

"The only thing to disappear from the shops is Ammo"

Because there is no genuine threat of nuclear war. Just rhetoric and brinkmanship in that regard.

lollipoprainbow · 13/02/2022 10:18

Careful @roarfeckingroarr@User135644 you'll be accused of racism for saying that.

lollipoprainbow · 13/02/2022 10:19

Oh and don't say schlep

Horological · 13/02/2022 10:24

@lollipoprainbow and @WorstXmasEver

There's no need to accuse you of racism. I can accuse you of stupidity and ignorance instead. It is nothing whatsoever to do with having a difference of opinion at all. You just don't know some basic facts.

It's a simple fact, not opinion, that the UK takes very few refugees in comparision to other countries. Not just in atual numbers but as a proportion of the population.
