If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

The vast majority of people seen at the school gate or around in public are not asylum seekers though. There are loads of job vacancies that would just never be filled without economic migrants from other countries. We rely on a steady stream of people who are willing to put up with the most unpleasant jobs that someone needs to do but no one much wants to do. Our country would not be as prosperous as it is without them. Refugees/Asylum seekers are a much much smaller number. The number of asylum seekers could double and the overall effect on nationality demographics wouldn't change very much.

WorstXmasEver · 13/02/2022 06:30

@FrenchFancie Why mention racism when Ukraine is a white nation?

I just don't think any Ukrainians should be allowed here if the country is taken over by Putin & that the UK has enough to deal with currently.

We're only a few months on from housing the 1000's of "translators" that the British army apparently needed during the conflict that was never anything to do with the UK.

Oh yes wheat. I have a Ukrainian friend, who when she got married they had a wonderful ornate bread rather than a traditional cake. It was like a bread work of art.

SexTrainGlue · 13/02/2022 06:40

@Chichimcgee

I presume energy prices will go through the roof.

Would they potentially cut off all energy to us?

We don't get that much of our energy from them, but mainland Europe does.

They'll need to switch to other suppliers, putting prices up for everyone. Cost of goods from EU will increase (nothing to do with Brexit, but because of their inflation from their fuel crises) which will have knock on effects here. Expect price rises across the board.

Good point about cyber attacks.

FrenchFancie · 13/02/2022 06:42

Oh dear @WorstXmasEver my mistake I meant xenophobia but I’m pleased that you recognised the comment was directed at you.

I’m not going to engage with you on this subject because you are being terribly, horribly offensive. You are wrong in your views and are spreading lies and disinformation.

itsgettingweird · 13/02/2022 06:42

@ArcheryAnnie

On the Ukraine question, I can see one very annoying effect will be lots of Boris attempting to be "statesmanlike" on the telly to deflect from the lying, cheating, law breaking, incompetent clown that he really is.
This.

My fear is less Russia invading Ukraine - but rather Boris and his chins making it 10 times worse I their reaction.

Obviously I fear the invasion itself too. But I don't think the actual invasion will affect us directly. As mentioned the consequences of sanctions etc will and that's where polio and have the ability to cock it up.

mpsw · 13/02/2022 06:45

If you mean the Afghan ones, there were about 300 who needed extraction at the time of the fall of Kabul. There were definitely working with British forces. Even if you think we should not have been there, we were and for 20 years. Of course translators are needed, and they shouid not be left behind to face the death penalty as enemy collaborators

GalactatingGoddess · 13/02/2022 06:45

@WorstXmasEver When you refer to the UK as a dumping ground it makes the link that refugees and non UK citizens are therefore trash/rubbish/dirt. Is that what you think?

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 13/02/2022 06:55

@WorstXmasEver as my late Irish grandmother would say, thank God you weren't the innkeeper when Mary and Joseph were abroad in her condition.

People who pretend not to be racists because they're proud of their xenophobia make me sick.

Allaboutyou222 · 13/02/2022 06:57
@Horological Surely you would expect this to be the case as we are an island far away from the "problem areas" of the world.

I do not rely on news or "lookign things up", I see & hear the amount of foreign-born parents picking up kids at the school gate.

I'm in rural England & these are my facts.
You have heard a few people speaking a different language so these are your facts. Ah ok.

That’s not fact. That is anecdote.

KloppsTeeth · 13/02/2022 07:08

Gas BBQs, make sure that you’ve topped up your canisters.

TeenyQueen · 13/02/2022 07:15

@WorstXmasEver I must be one of those horrible foreign parents, albeit at the nursery door and not the school gate. I'm Scandinavian, I have two university degrees and a professional job as a front line keywords. My children are mixed race and bilingual and my British born Chinese husband pays a six-figure sum in tax each year from his successful business. I must be the absolute scum of the earth, speaking my native language to my children at the nursery door...

TeenyQueen · 13/02/2022 07:15

keyworker

EishetChayil · 13/02/2022 07:16

We are the dumping ground of the world

What an ignorant statement. If you knew even the basics of history, you'd be aware that Britain's immigration is a direct result of our colonising a large proportion of the world.

ShippingNews · 13/02/2022 07:18

Unfortunately true. Boris is one person who will probably welcome an invasion.
PicsInRed · 13/02/2022 07:19

One phenomenon we can expect is a lot more of the known professional attempts to derail public discussions of any invasion...

Best to completely ignore.

KloppsTeeth · 13/02/2022 07:20

Good Lord, forriners daring to come here to this land of Jerusalem for a safe haven from the horrors of war? Clutches pearls! At the school gates no less, seeking education for their children whilst their children teach ours about compassion for our fellow humans? This will never do. Bosom hoik and a loud tut! 🙄

FourChimneys · 13/02/2022 07:23

I think it is important to plan how we would live without the Internet, even for a short time.

If we think the cost of living is going up, we probably haven't even seen the start unfortunately.

As an aside, I always thought my DCs school was much richer for having pupils from many different countries and cultures. They, and us, learned so much.

Lightstoobright · 13/02/2022 07:27

Wtf is this thread. Sunday morning and my stress levels have just gone through the roof, mainly due to the racist ignorance, but also the talk of cyber attacks and no gas.

tara66 · 13/02/2022 07:35

Emigrants are often more enterprising, hard working and intelligent than the locals (which may be why they have survived in first place) e.g. Rishi Sunak's parents left East Africa in 1960s after independence when Asians there were no longer welcome there . .

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 13/02/2022 07:36

I suspect WorstXmasEver is a troll attempting to derail.

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 13/02/2022 07:45

There's no point arguing with @WorstXmasEver. They are either a troll or are so far down the right wing conspiracy rabbit hole that they are basically deluded at this point and incapable of rational thought.

In terms of Ukraine, I think we will see significant price rises across the board. The Russians have been conducting military drills off the coast of Ireland right over where there are several data cables, so I think cyber attacks are very likely.

The best case scenario is that they opt to annex part of the country and then go home without taking things further. Worst case is that neighbouring countries that are part of NATO get drawn in and then we're looking at another world war.

QuentininQuarantino · 13/02/2022 07:46

Jesus @WorstXmasEver you are xenophobic, ignorant, completely wrong and extremely offensive.

Your being born somewhere safe was an accident of birth.

What’s wrong with people speaking by foreign at the school gates btw? It’s amazing how only in the Uk is that seen as a negative, anywhere else and people celebrate multilingualism as resourceful and interesting.
