If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 01:26

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

@WorstXmasEver

It's not a "few" foreign accents, it's most of the school but I am not against skilled immigrants coming to the UK.

The country simply cannot take any more in however & it shouldn't as the UK is in a terrible state.

Keep posting your googled statistics people. Google is not your friend & is a company merely posting stats provided by a government that consistently lies to it's people.

I hope that Putin doesn't invade because it will flood the UK with people who cant look after themselves.

It sounds like there was plenty of space at the school for the children to attend - over half the school you say?
Must have been very, very undersubscribed.

That made me laugh really hard too 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@CaptainMarvelDanvers

I suspect WorstXmasEver is a troll attempting to derail.
Comments on many threads, always offensive.
PeeAche · 13/02/2022 09:09

Oh and to get back on topic (sorry OP, what a de-rail!) I agree that fuel prices are going to spike again.

I can foresee another 2-4 weeks of panic buying and queues at the petrol station. 🤦🏻‍♀️

itsgettingweird · 13/02/2022 09:09

Is "these are my facts" the new "that's my truth"?

BeyondMyWits · 13/02/2022 09:10

Cyber attacks, denial of service etc.

What would we do in this country with no Internet, no telly, no phone, (without even going down the dark rabbit hole of no power, no heat, no petrol, much less food. Etc.)

I work in a pharmacy. A cyber attack could be fatal. The numbers of people we deal with is huge compared with the old paper script days. We would not cope. So in addition to getting in some cash and gas bottles etc I'd make sure you have enough medication.

Though to be honest, the next biggest threat is panic buying. The numbers of people who bought shed loads of paracetamol in March 2020 and are now bringing in bagfuls for disposal beyond use by date is shameful.

DePfeffoff · 13/02/2022 09:10

I see & hear the amount of foreign-born parents picking up kids at the school gate

I saw and heard the number of foreign-born people basically keeping the NHS going when my father was seriously ill and then in hospital for a long time. I seriously worry about the number who have left due to Brexit. Immigration? Bring it on!

8dpwoah · 13/02/2022 09:11

Thank you for the thread, some things I hadn't thought of here. Before having kids I wasn't too worried about preparing for world events but with having them, and Brexit, Covid and now this in quick succession we now try to make sure we are well stocked with basics. We were just starting to dwindle down the stocks a little bit as best before dates are looming but I think I'll need to do a restock. I learned my lesson with the car and we have power it's more often than many places so are ok for that but I absolutely hadn't thought about banking or internet disruption, that's really worrying.

8dpwoah · 13/02/2022 09:11

Power cuts 🤦

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 13/02/2022 09:12

Actually @TulipsGarden everyone foreign who moves here to live IS an immigrant. That's just the word that means someone who's moved in from another country. Sorry for nit picking as I'm on your side if this argument but I hate the negativity of this word spin by the media.

What they all aren't is refugees.

My grandpa was a refugee from Poland after WWII He was in the Polish resistance and would have been shot had he returned to Poland.

you'd be amazed how any people I've said this to in a challenge about their attitude to refugees who've said "that's different, his life was in danger" 🤦🏽‍♀️

I teach geography and history, lots of great teachable moments that get erased by (some) parents and media as soon as they leave the classroom!

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 13/02/2022 09:13

@WorstXmasEver obviously you've seen people at the school gate so all my knowledge and understanding through a lifetime of reading for teaching about thee things is actually wrong. I bow down to your extensive knowledge

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 13/02/2022 09:14

On the Ukraine side. Very very worrying. I can barely afford fuel as it is. And I definitely can't afford a cheaper to run car!

But the main issue here is people. Just horrific that we are in this situation ramping up fir a war in Europe again 😭

FrancescaContini · 13/02/2022 09:15

@WorstXmasEver

Increased energy prices & vast numbers of Ukrainian asylum seekers.

We are the dumping ground of the world.

Shock

This is an appalling thing to say. Do you have no empathy?

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 09:17

@PeeAche

This thread has turned awfully racist. 😢 I hope HQ come in and do a clean up. I'd hate for any non-U.K.-nationals to see this and think this is a generalised MN or U.K. view, because it is not. We are not a dumping ground, we are a haven.

And even amidst Brexit, rising fuel prices and nastiness such as this, I am still grateful that this is where I was born. Born into safety, educated to a high standard and kept healthy by our NHS. I get to enjoy the opportunity that this country provides every day, and I didn't have to ask permission or risk my life to be here.

Sorry to anyone that is hurt by the content of this thread. It doesn't represent us all.

Yes I'm sad my thread has been derailed by ill informed xenophobia. It certainly wasn't my intention.

It seems you can't swing a cat around here without hitting on some vile racism.

We're talking about people facing imminent invasion. Grandmothers preparing to stand and fight. Ordinary civilians being trained in warfare. It's appalling and frightening - and to imply that they are in any way lesser humans than us by saying the UK is a "dumping ground" is disgusting. These are people we are talking about.

I recently read that if more countries had done more to take in Jewish refugees at the start of WW2 the Holocaust could have been prevented. We had the opportunity but we didn't help them escape as much as we could have. Xenophobia prevailed and 6 million men, women and little children were murdered.

Place marking as I’ve been wondering this.

Ignoring the dickhead comments from the troll: it’s too early.

“Foreign born parents” - how do you define “foreign”? Are you 100% Anglo-Saxon (in itself a mishmash of “foreigners”)?
ThackeryBinks · 13/02/2022 09:19

Can I just say that the beautiful Polish lady I met at the school gates is still one of my best friends over a decade later. As for the war I don't think we've been on good terms with Russia since they nearly had to evacuate Salisbury due to Novichok.

DePfeffoff · 13/02/2022 09:19

@FrancescaContini, why is your post addressed to me? As my post makes clear, I was quoting someone else.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/02/2022 09:19

Oil might go to $120/barrel. There'd also be another hike on the April cap. Changes are already afoot to be able to adjust the cap in the face of dramatic pressure, so the rise would be seen immediately - rather than waiting for the typical adjustment period.

1dayatatime · 13/02/2022 09:20

The whole Ukrainian situation is ridiculous and unnecessary.

What does Russia want?
Russia is paranoid about being invaded. I know this seems inconceivable to us that the West would ever want to invade Russia. But Russia has been invaded twice plus a Cold War and has very long borders which other countries would like to nibble away at. To counter this Russia has sought to have its border countries to be compliant or in their "sphere of influence" such as Belorussia or Kazakhstan etc. What Russia does not want is Ukraine right on their border being in the Western sphere of influence, joining the EU or even worse NATO.

What does the West want?
Firstly nobody is that interested in Ukraine but can't be seen to be saying so. The prospect of it entering the EU is decades away, but they can't say this as it would push Ukraine towards Russia. Nobody is seriously thinking of allowing them to join NATO because they are already in conflict with Russia and the last thing the western economies need right now or ever is to get dragged into a conflict with a nuclear armed Russia. But again the West can't say this as it would push Ukraine into the arms of Russia.

We now have a situation where Russia does not want Ukraine to join NATO and wants the West to state this. The West doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO but can't really state this.

Russia has massed troops on the border and will find it difficult to remove them without Putin losing face. The massing of troops has also pushed Ukraine closer to the Western sphere.

If Russia did invade then it would be very messy and costly in lives and money. Russia and the West know this. But Russia's pain could be the West's gain.

Lastly we have a stand off with Russia saying give me guarantees or else and the West calling their bluff and saying don't believe you / go ahead.

The real loser of course in all of this is Ukraine.

Yeah pharmaceuticals is a concern - we rely so much on the internet, we have no resilience

One a side note - Paracetamol has a use by date? I had no idea!

I think our utterly toothless response to the Salisbury attack told Putin everything he needs to know about how easy it would be to do it again. I'm appalled that we did nothing.

Not agreeing with @WorstXmasEver but I think when you compare numbers of refugees taken in by countries you should look at numbers relative to square metres of liveable space in said country. Germany, France, not to mention Middle Eastern countries are vast compared to the UK
