If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 01:26

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

Marking my place. I wondered this too

blueshoes · 13/02/2022 02:31

I presume energy prices will go through the roof.

Would they potentially cut off all energy to us?

We are the dumping ground of the world

@WorstXmasEver what on earth are you talking about?! This country takes a very small proportion of refugees in comparison to other countries.

Look it up and find out the actual facts about it.

Horological · 13/02/2022 03:34

@WorstXmasEver

Just by googling ‘which countries take the most refugees’ you will find that the U.K. is not even in the top 10. I don’t even know how far down it would come in the list but it really, really is not a major destination for refugees. Some countries like Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan take MILLIONS. Even in Europe many other counties such as Sweden and Germany take way more than us.

I think you need to rethink your news sources.

@WorstXmasEver

Increased energy prices & vast numbers of Ukrainian asylum seekers.

We are the dumping ground of the world.

Try doing some research (and I don't mean reading the daily mail) 🙄
ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/02/2022 05:01

@WorstXmasEver we are the dumping ground of the world?

Ignorance shining through here.

Go and check how many refugees / asylum seekers U.K. takes compared to other countries.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/02/2022 05:02

@WorstXmasEver ooooooh no. Forrin speaking parents at the school gates. Disaster!

How very dare they.

ArcheryAnnie · 13/02/2022 05:02

There isn't a single person anywhere in the British Isles- including you, including me - who can claim to be indigenous. All of us are here as a result of "foreign-born" ancestors. Every single one of us.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 13/02/2022 05:04

I'll consider movinv somewhere where I can afford to heat my bloody home.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 13/02/2022 05:05

re:asylum-seekers, if you are talking about those from Donetsk, Luhansk, etc, they have been pouring into Russia for years. There are many charities which work to housr and feed them.

Stringervest · 13/02/2022 05:07

@WorstXmasEver why does seeing foreign born parents at the school gates make you think the UK is a dumping ground?

wtfwasthatmate · 13/02/2022 05:09

I do not rely on news or "lookign things up", I see & hear the amount of foreign-born parents picking up kids at the school gate.

Wtf 😂😂😂

I can imagine your Facebook.

powerofattorney12 · 13/02/2022 05:14
@Horological Surely you would expect this to be the case as we are an island far away from the "problem areas" of the world.

I'm in rural England & these are my facts.
Firstly this is offensive, secondly it is ignorant.

My ex used to say similar - that everyone was beating a path to the UK due to the benefits which are available, and no amount of fact quoting would change his mind.

twosticksandanapple · 13/02/2022 05:38

2019 UK had 133,094 asylum seekers
France 407, 903
Germany 1,146,685
Italy 207,609

ArcheryAnnie · 13/02/2022 05:42

On the Ukraine question, I can see one very annoying effect will be lots of Boris attempting to be "statesmanlike" on the telly to deflect from the lying, cheating, law breaking, incompetent clown that he really is.

Unescorted · 13/02/2022 05:52

@WorstXmasEver

Is it just forrin speaking people who you have an issue with. I am an immigrant - economic, no other reason to come here except greed. I am guessing that because I speak English fluently that I am not in the demographic you are talking about.

I am not sure how you grew up to have such a selfish attitude that you would deny a person who's family had been uprooted through no fault of their own refuge in a safe place. I feel sorry for you to have to carry around that large a ball of hate and envy. It must be wearing.

😂 Did you ever consider that maybe they choose to move here? Not everyone foreign is an immigrant.

Anyway. Even if they are, you should count yourself lucky you live somewhere people want to seek safety. What would you do if your home country were too dangerous or poverty-stricken for your family to stay?

So you hear a few foreign accents at the school gate and extrapolate from that that were over run with asylum seekers? I think you need to get out into the world more. DSs best friend and her mom are foreign born, they moved over here and pay thousands to do so for all the legal stuff. My DSs surgeon has a strong foreign accent still, he moved over here as a surgeon. Not to mention the many nurses who moved over here for work. None of them refugees and many of them helping keep this country going.

tara66 · 13/02/2022 06:18

This thread appears to have digressed from the main topic ! May I say - there will be a shortage of wheat products because Ukraine is a big producer of it. .Hope I don't get bashed for that!! And mass immigration from Ukraine has been sited as being a result of Russian invasion, generally speaking and not just at school gates!

FrenchFancie · 13/02/2022 06:21

Well that escalated quickly….!

I’ll be sure to tell my senior civil servant, foreign born BIL that he’s a refugee and unwelcome…

Aside from the casual racism, I should imagine fuel and gas prices will go up. Cyber attacks will be an issue so keep a stock of cash and be prepared for infrastructure failure such as issues with the water and food supplies. Russia has shown itself capable of disrupting all sorts of things….
