If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

275 replies

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 01:26

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

@PicsInRed

One phenomenon we can expect is a lot more of the known professional attempts to derail public discussions of any invasion...

Best to completely ignore.

This - it’s become so obvious in the past few weeks elsewhere on the internet.

I saw a positive post about 2 million people in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia holding hands in protest of the USSR and their hope for freedom and infrastructure etc. You had derailing comments and questions such as “how bad was it really?”, and “Now they wish they never left”. Which is crazy, and untrue if you have ever met a Lithuanian or Latvian (never met an Estonian).
@Horological Surely you would expect this to be the case as we are an island far away from the "problem areas" of the world.

I do not rely on news or "lookign things up", I see & hear the amount of foreign-born parents picking up kids at the school gate.

I'm in rural England & these are my facts.
Yes why rely on actual evidence when you can confirm your own prejudice!

Confused

Ergh. You sound horrible.

flashbac · 13/02/2022 07:56

@WorstXmasEver

Increased energy prices & vast numbers of Ukrainian asylum seekers.

We are the dumping ground of the world.

You are comparing refugees to rubbish?
crosbystillsandmash · 13/02/2022 08:00

@WorstXmasEver

Teacher here.
My class is full of 'foreigners' and thank god because they are, without exception, the politest, most hard working and well adjusted children in my class.

It's the 'locals' that cause all the problems and don't get me started on their parents....

CormoranStrike · 13/02/2022 08:03

This.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/02/2022 08:04

I can't believe how effectively this thread was derailed. That was as impressive as it was disgusting.

Antsgomarching · 13/02/2022 08:07

Was going to say wheat prices (i think primarily their exports go to egypt, lebanaon etc but it will put pressure on prices). Oil and gas prices. Most refugees will be housed in neighbouring countries, I believe Poland is preparing to host refugees in the event of war.

FrenchFancie · 13/02/2022 08:07

@FourTeaFallOut yes you’d almost think it was a professional attempt! (Notes the irony in me adding this, thus derailing further).

ArcheryAnnie · 13/02/2022 08:09

I'm not a Biden fan (though he's a billion, billion times better than Trump), but I've been very relieved to see him say that he wouldn't counter-invade Ukraine to extract US nationals caught up in any invasion, as a US-Russia standoff isn't to be contemplated. Thank fucking god for that

Antsgomarching · 13/02/2022 08:10

Also anything with palladium in it, I think Russia produces a massive chunk of palladium so catalytic convertors (I believe) so other shortages/price rises.

lollipoprainbow · 13/02/2022 08:12

@crosbystillsandmash what a lovely thing to say as a teacher should you really be having favourites??

Toomanylosthours · 13/02/2022 08:12

Sorry to draw this back to OPs original question, cyber attacks are one of the biggest impacts we can expect, there's been several large companies who have recently been subjected to Cyber attacks recently. General cost rises (will continue to be Brexit linked)

My biggest concern, if Russia takes Ukraine without intervention, does that allow china to take Taiwan and Myanmar.

We are so wrapped up in woke freedom in western counties that we fail to see real world problems and suffering unless celebrities jump on an advertising wagon.

lollipoprainbow · 13/02/2022 08:13

People are perfectly entitled to be concerned about immigration before being shouted down as a being a racist it's all so so predictable. The minute I saw the comment I knew that the rest of the post would be hijacked.

User0458832 · 13/02/2022 08:15

Energy prices so therefore most other things will go up, NHS could be vulnerable to cyber attack, likewise banks and other infrastructure.

Oh dear god.

DivGirl · 13/02/2022 08:16

@ArcheryAnnie

There isn't a single person anywhere in the British Isles- including you, including me - who can claim to be indigenous. All of us are here as a result of "foreign-born" ancestors. Every single one of us.
In what way is this true? My ancestry is entirely Scottish. Not a single percentage point from anywhere else. Incredibly dull but definitely British.

This was such a good and interesting idea for a thread, shame it’s been derailed to almost certain deletion.

I’ll fill up my car today, maybe get some cash out too.

Yeah I’d agree with this too.
CaptainMarvelDanvers · 13/02/2022 08:20

The cyber attacks - I don’t carry cash.

Food hikes - I don’t currently have luxuries (internet isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential)

But despite this, I understand it will be nothing that the Ukrainians will be facing. If any do make it over here, I might have a spare room.

bumblingbovine49 · 13/02/2022 08:23

@WorstXmasEver

It's not a "few" foreign accents, it's most of the school but I am not against skilled immigrants coming to the UK.

The country simply cannot take any more in however & it shouldn't as the UK is in a terrible state.

Keep posting your googled statistics people. Google is not your friend & is a company merely posting stats provided by a government that consistently lies to it's people.

I hope that Putin doesn't invade because it will flood the UK with people who cant look after themselves.

You really need to stop living in such fear and even if you can't manage to stop being so scared ( we all get scared) you absolutely have to stop looking around for the people worse off than you to blame so that you can feel better. It is what children do not adults
saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 08:23

I'll ignore the troll and get back to my original question.

Good point about wheat, I didn't know Ukraine was a big producer and exporter of wheat. I guess our food prices will increase even more.

Yes the Russian military exercise taking place off the Irish coast worries me - they have been messing around in the vicinity of our sub sea cables for a while. If they actually managed to cut them we would be fucked - those cables I think carry internet / telecommunications connection to the US. I must do some reading to find out more but I think they could severely disrupt our communication network.

As for cyber attack - I'm a civil servant and we've been told that it is not a question of if we will face an attack, but when. We are a relatively minor government department but a cyber attack could cause significant disruption to our work - imagine that on a larger scale and you can see how easily normal government functions could be impacted.

I'm grateful I was lucky enough to be born in England and not a war torn country. I would never think to deny another human being such a basic thing as safety just because I was born on a peice of land and they weren't. This thread is a sad read.
