If Ukraine invasion happens - what impacts will we see here?

So the Russian invasion of Ukraine is looking increasingly likely and imminent.

If it happens, UK and US will have to proceed with sanctions. Russia may well retaliate with cyber attacks and pipeline/ communications cable disruptions.

My friend's DH is ex military. He warned me today to make sure my car fuel and heating oil are topped up. He also recommended making sure I had cash as a cyber attack on the banks/internet is possible.

What other impacts do people think we may face? And what should we do to prep for them?

The big immediate effect here could be petrol prices and shortages due to completely unnecessary panic buying and the stock market wild fluctuations unless they are military supply companies. Likely to be pretty short term because I seriously doubt it's going to be more than a skirmish

It’s amazing how only in the Uk is that seen as a negative, anywhere else and people celebrate multilingualism as resourceful and interesting.

Is this supposed to be sarcasm? The UK is one of the most open minded countries on the planet when it comes to accepting diversity. If you live in... almost any other country, you will get an awful shock.

I think Ukrainians would make wonderful contributions to the UK and have no issues with this.

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/02/2022 08:30

I agree that cyber attacks are a distinct possibility, most likely aimed at banking, energy and transport infrastructures.

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 08:33

Yeah we've seen how quickly panic buying can have an effect. That said, I'm still topping up my fuel.

I won't feed the troll but just wanted to say I'm aware that these hardships are nothing compared to what the Ukrainians are facing. It feels a little crass to be worrying about losing access to WhatsApp when those brave stoic people are facing an actual invasion, but my anxiety is such that I like to discuss and prepare for impacts no matter how relatively minor they are.

I’ve been watching series 3 of Warship:Life at Sea on channel 5. It’s about life on a Royal Navy frigate and there’s been a lot of tension with Russian ships. One of the episodes focussed on keeping the Russian ships away from our communication cables under the arctic circle. If these were damaged by the Russians the UK would be without communication with the outside world (no WiFi etc) for weeks. It’d be devastating to our country. I thought we relied on satellites but apparently we don’t. It’s an interesting watch especially with the Ukraine situation at the moment.

saltedBubbly · 13/02/2022 08:37

Yes I saw that Warship documentary too. I was aware of Russian submarine shenanigans prior to that but this confirmed it is really being taken seriously.

It also happened a few years ago, and as a pp said the Russians are conducting military exercises off the coast of Ireland currently- our sub sea cables are extremely vulnerable.

My biological father came to the UK in the 80s. I was born here. I have never even until now considered myself to not be anything but British!

On subject, I think being against Russia is going to be nasty

Footballsundays6777 · 13/02/2022 08:41

It’s all so worrying OP, we have the vast amount of my DHs family there, he moved here in the 90s ( I’ve name changed as v outing!).
His family are on the Poland side of Ukraine rather than the Russian side but they are v v v scared.

Should war break out we will do our best to try and get them over here.

Here I expect fuel prices will rocket….I think cyber attacks on the logistical aspects of life that keep us going.

Nothing would surprise me with Putin…. he is blaming the West for pushing him into it and will no doubt use the west as an excuse when he takes action.

This is scary. I work for an online bank so very concerning.

My heart goes out to your family. There was a phone in on Radio2 the other day with people like yourself - Ukrainians living in Britain who still had family over there. They said the Ukrainians are very stoic about the threat, and one woman said her mother has said she will go to the border to fight to protect her grandchildren. The pictures in today's news of Ukrainian civilians being trained with wooden mock up guns sends chills down my spine. I sincerely hope you can get your family out to safety

@saltedBubbly a troll or someone who holds a different opinion to you??

Ylvamoon · 13/02/2022 08:51

It will be another convenient news story to hide the reality of Brexit.

Invitation/ price hikes? Yeah it's because of the Ukrainian invasion.

Meanwhile the EU will be able to keep their impact on their economy far more stable.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

Yes. I do pretty much 100% of my daily transactions now by contactless card and bank transfer. Cash has almost become obsolete to me. How easily we could be totally crippled by an attack on our online banking systems

@ WorstXmasEver. Just had a look at your other posts to see if you’re as much of a dick as your appear on this thread. I wonder why no one came to your 40th apart from your “Mrs” Grin. Hopefully she’ll see the light too.

Both

Other people have called them a troll. It derailed the thread. I really want to discuss the potential impacts to us and how we can prepare for them.

I think you're right about it becoming a smokescreen to hide behind - same was Covid has been. The government have been able to hide behind other crises so that the real impact of Brexit can be blamed on other things.

I am concerned about fuel and cyber attacks causing some disruption but I am not worried about wheat imports. As although it is one of the Ukraines major exports, the UK only imports 15% of its wheat, which is mainly from US. Canada ,France, and Germany . (flourmillers.org)

How will they be able to keep their economy impact if they are hugely dependent on Russian gas imports?

They are trying to keep out of this because of their economic ties with Russia, it's us and the US who are getting stuck in there for some reason.

Tilltheend99 · 13/02/2022 09:03

@WorstXmasEver

Increased energy prices & vast numbers of Ukrainian asylum seekers.

We are the dumping ground of the world.

This is completely inaccurate as the U.K. takes in less asylum seekers than the majority of other eu countries. (People do generally claim asylum or live in refugee camps in neighbouring countries first AND most people would prefer to live in their homeland if there wasn’t a chance of being bombed or tortured to death)

I feel sorry for the people of Ukrainian. The west started out giving the impression they would protect them from invasion but now it seems they are to be thrown to the wolves to avert full world war with Russia. It won’t work because Putin will want the rest of the Baltic states too.

Tilltheend99 · 13/02/2022 09:04

Absolutely untrue.

PeeAche · 13/02/2022 09:06

This thread has turned awfully racist. 😢 I hope HQ come in and do a clean up. I'd hate for any non-U.K.-nationals to see this and think this is a generalised MN or U.K. view, because it is not. We are not a dumping ground, we are a haven.

And even amidst Brexit, rising fuel prices and nastiness such as this, I am still grateful that this is where I was born. Born into safety, educated to a high standard and kept healthy by our NHS. I get to enjoy the opportunity that this country provides every day, and I didn't have to ask permission or risk my life to be here.

Sorry to anyone that is hurt by the content of this thread. It doesn't represent us all.
