Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

Wait this maths doesn't work out right? It's wrong?

I may have baby brain but I think your decimal point may be in the wrong place. I think it looks more like it’s £1100 roughly.

Disclaimer: definitely possible I’m wrong about this

Chemenger · 08/02/2022 17:12

Surely 9p per mile and 12000 miles (roughly) is just over £1000?

Is there an option to buy the car? Would it be cheaper to do that? My lease has an option to buy it at the end of lease for 12k (purchase price was just under 30k) - If its an option then at least you aren't handing over 11k and left without a car? Sorry you've had such a massive shock OP, I would be angry too Flowers

Jmaho · 08/02/2022 17:13

Maths is totally off if that price per mile is correct. Isn't it more like £1100?

HappiestHippo123 · 08/02/2022 17:13

Does the bill say you owe 11k or you owe X pence per mile?

ChatterMonkey · 08/02/2022 17:13

Is there an option to buy the car from them rather than pay the fee and give it back?

I know someone who did that when they realised they were going to exceed the mileage allowed on the lease agreement, but it was before the end of the lease so might be different if yours has run the full course?

luxright · 08/02/2022 17:13

Should also say my excess mileage is .10p so fingers crossed your maths is out!

Jmaho · 08/02/2022 17:14

The calculation you've got is based on 89p ish per mile

PinkingScissors · 08/02/2022 17:14

£1,111?

8.96p X 12402miles= 111,121.92p

/100 to get £ = 1,111

contactornotthatisthequestion · 08/02/2022 17:14

if its 8.96p it should be around £1112 total so looks like the decimal point has been applied in the wrong place

RishiRich · 08/02/2022 17:15

I think it's less than you're thinking.

redandwhite1 · 08/02/2022 17:15

We had this, had to suck it up. Pain in the bloody ass

Think ours was about £1k too

contactornotthatisthequestion · 08/02/2022 17:16

yep too slow replying....

Lampshading · 08/02/2022 17:16

Cripes yes I mean over £1k is bad but not quite as bad as 11k if that gives you any comfort?

Doyoumind · 08/02/2022 17:18

Looks like you're £10k richer than you thought you were 15 minutes ago OP.

Ijustreallywantacat · 08/02/2022 17:18

9p per mile is about £1100.

What does it actually say.
If he read 0.8 he might have actually been correct I that 0.8 of a pound is 80p! But I don't know if that's a usual price.

anniegun · 08/02/2022 17:19

The poor bloke has got an ear bashing because you didn't check the maths?

jamfirstcreamsecond · 08/02/2022 17:19

Re, the maths. You need to see the documentation. It's usual for the excess mileage costs to be, for example, £8.96 per mile for the first 5k in excess but then rising significantly to £10.99 for each mile thereafter. (All figs plucked out of thin air by me).

Lease cars are great; I have them but, the big downside is the mileage restrictions and penalties imposed.

Essentially you're paying for the depreciation and a car with significantly increased mileage will have depreciated more (whether to the tune of £11k more is another question).

He's been a prize Wally and I would be furious too.

In the event the company won't budge on the fees, can you finance buying the car?

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:19

Oh my bloody god I'm an idiot who can't do basic maths. What a bloody relief. Yes letter said what mileage was included and excess cost and to be paid within 30 days. I've been crying over this for an hour!!!

FidoRido · 08/02/2022 17:21

Smile this is a happy ending!

Iamanicepersonreally · 08/02/2022 17:22

£1,111.22

Leftbutcameback · 08/02/2022 17:22

That must be a massive relief! MN to the rescue this time.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 17:24

I've had several lease cars and the mileage excess has always been a few pence per mile.

However, if 0.8 is £0.80 or 80 pence a mile, that would add up to the £11k.

However I really would double check as that doesn't sound right and 9 p a mile and a bill of £1k sounds more like it.

But if it is £11k, id look into buying it like a PP suggests.
