Camilla to be Queen

I think I’m happy with this (not that’s it’s any of my business). She’s clearly made Charles very happy and has fitted into the family well.
Good for her, it’s deserved.

The fact that anyone is upset about this is hilarious. In what way does it affect your life? The whole idea of a monarchy is nonsense and don't even get me started on the comments about how "deserved" it is - not a single one of them deserve their wealth or titles. They were born into it by sheer luck. Even the queen wasn't meant to have it, she only became queen because her uncle jacked it all in for a woman.

Deserved, indeed Hmm

LittleMissPerfect28 · 05/02/2022 23:13

Nothing against Camilla but I don't understand why the Queen names Camilla as future Queen but yet her own husband only had the title of prince?

This makes no sense to me?

Benjispruce5 · 05/02/2022 23:13

Time for them all to go when the Queen dies.

jerometheturnipking · 05/02/2022 23:14

William will become King. If Charles had still been married to Diana she’d have gone from Queen (Consort) Diana to what- The King Mother?

Queen Mother if she was the mother of the monarch.

So what would Camilla be?

Queen Dowager.

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 23:15

if she's a public figure running your country of course it's your business.

Does anyone know what happens if she outlived Charles?

I think Diana would have just been Queen Diana, not the King Mother?

If I'm not mistaken, the Queen Mother called herself such because she and her daughter were both called Elizabeth, so you couldn't really have two Queen Elizabeths? But her title remained Her Majesty The Queen. I think!

Because in a monarchy, a king always outranks a queen. Since the current queen is top of the food chain, she can't be outranked, so Philip was prince consort.

However, a queen consort can be a queen consort because her title can't outrank the king's. Hope that makes sense!

MindyStClaire · 05/02/2022 23:15

If she outlives Charles, she'll still be Queen Camilla. The Queen Mother only used that style as both she and her daughter were called Elizabeth.

Tealightsandd · 05/02/2022 23:16

@Sparklingbrook

I completely disagreed with Sparklingbrook about something else the other day

What's wrong with just putting 'I agree with Sparklingbrook?' Confused Grin

To show the extent of how much I agreed with you here. Clumsily done, it seems. 🤷‍♀️Grin

Anyway moving on. I'm happy with the announcement, and I really don't think it has anything to do with Andrew.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 23:16

Does anyone really think about the Royal Family that much? It's only on threads on here that I give them a thought.
It'll make no difference to me who is called what. I don't understand all the outrage really.

Husbands of Queen monarchs are always Prince Consort because Queens are deferential to kings because sexism. A spouse never takes precedence over the hereditary monarch.

DaisyChains3 · 05/02/2022 23:17

I have come to respect her and think she works hard and quietly for her causes which she appears to care deeply about. She’s been a good support and partner for Charles. I thought the way they behaved when Diana was alive was dreadful, but she’s earned her spurs. It’s a clever move for the Queen to announce this now. It avoids controversy when Charles ascends.

Because the system is sexist, and male titles automatically outrank female titles. So a king would be considered senior to a queen, which wouldn't make sense as Liz was the reigning monarch and Philip her consort.

By contrast, women by default get the female version of all their husband's titles. So as wife of the king, Camilla would be queen whether or not she publicly used that title.

JudgeJ · 05/02/2022 23:17

@MsFogi

It is simply to deflect attention from Andrew, yet again.
I doubt her father died 70 years ago tomorrow just to deflect attention from Andrew or are you suggesting that if there were no Andrew problem she would not want to mark the death of her father and her accession?
mixum · 05/02/2022 23:17

@Figgit

Who cares. It’s all so bloody anachronistic. Off with their heads. The whole leeching lot of them.
That's the spirit!

The current instagram generation have no interest in these fossils I'm afraid, and few will care a jot about this no matter what their age. Cost of living will not affect Highgrove either and that sticks in many a craw.

The Queen is a crafty lady. To deny Camilla the title would be like trampling on Her Maj's grave, given that she has to actually pass on in order for this to happen.

She'd be Dowager Queen, not Queen Mother. It's always 'Queen Mother' not 'King Mother' because the 'Queen' bit refers to her status when her husband was alive, which she retains. However, as she isn't the mother of the future king, the correct style would be Dowager.

She would probably just continue to be known as 'Queen Camilla'. The only reason the late Elizabeth, widow of George VI, was known in public as 'The Queen Mother' was because she had the same first name as her daughter, so they couldn't both be 'Queen Elizabeth'.

Within her household (to staff and by members of the RF when talking to staff) the Queen Mother was referred to as 'Queen Elizabeth' and Elizabeth II as 'The Queen'.

Topseyt · 05/02/2022 23:19

@Pyriah

Actually when they were permitted to marry I’m sure they said she would never be queen. They weren’t even allowed to marry in church, they had to go to a register office. Now they’re trying to break that promise to the public and make her queen. It’s shocking.
You seem easily shocked.

I don't find it even mildly surprising. I always thought it would happen, and why on earth not? I'm only surprised that they took as long to announce it as they did.

pollygartertidywife · 05/02/2022 23:21

As someone who became a mistress that never 'created a vacancy' .. and also knew the late POW ()and adored her ) ,. I am thrilled

Life moves on... Charles should have married her from the start , it is a true love match, Diana was simply a pawn in a game and very very badly treated . you can't get away from the fact that you can't not love who you love...

Wheelerdeeler · 05/02/2022 23:21

Oh ffs this has nothing to do with Andrew.

This is the queen's message to her subjects on the eve of her 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

WitchWithoutChips · 05/02/2022 23:21

Yep, it's her Diamond Jubilee this year. We're getting an extra Bank Holiday. Bet the people wishing they'd sod off will all be going into work as normal.

Platinum - 70 years. Her diamond jubilee was in 2012.

Plenty will sneer but we’ll never see another one.

Pyriah · 05/02/2022 23:21

Why on earth not? Because she’s super unpopular and part of the arrangement when they married was she would never be queen. They’ve lied to the public.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 23:22

But they promised! Grin

Now they’re trying to break that promise to the public and make her queen

Except it's not them announcing their wish it's the Queen's, who is kind of in charge here.

SFHJ · 05/02/2022 23:22

@SlowBoiledFrog

If Charlotte became Queen would her husband become King. After all Prince Phillip wasn't king
No her husband would be a Prince consort as king is higher ranking than a queen. Just like Prince Philip and Prince Albert
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/02/2022 23:23

Tbh I never doubted this would be announced at some point.

Dillidalli · 05/02/2022 23:23

I like Camilla and Charles, they appear to have a lovely relationship (as much as I can tell). She has had to put up with a lot.
