Camilla to be Queen

I think I’m happy with this (not that’s it’s any of my business). She’s clearly made Charles very happy and has fitted into the family well.
Good for her, it’s deserved.

I don't really care - I'm not a Monarchist, and think it's all faintly ridiculous.

However, I feel as though we were told when they married that we could be reassured Camilla would never be Queen. Perhaps I've misremembered?

Lockdownbear · 07/02/2022 15:54

It was said woolily that is was likely / though that she would be styled as Princess / Duchess Consort when Charles succeeds the Throne. It was never a she'll definitely never be called Queen.

At the time of the wedding it was still very controversial and Camilla on the morning of the wedding was terrified they'd be protesters outside the registry office.

Lockdownbear · 07/02/2022 15:56

'Unlikely to be Queen' might have been another phrase that was use.

CallmeHendricks · 07/02/2022 15:57
@CallmeHendricks how do you know they have a deep love?
My observation is that she could not possibly have borne the terrible abuse and continued in the relationship had she not loved him very much.
Plus, their obvious affection towards each other and shared humour. Body language. Rarely, if ever, saw that with Diana.

Lockdownbear · 07/02/2022 16:01

@CallmeHendricks I agree they must both love each other very much.
Nobody would tolerate the abuse she did for nothing and it's not just the abuse its marrying a job for life - with no retirement date.

@CornishGem1975

Camilla has done a marvellous job, I completely support the Queen in this decision. I think she's a credit to the family when actual born and bred Royals have done nothing but damage in the past few years.

They had an affair, hardly a hanging crime. Diana had bloody loads and yet she's still given Saint status.

Diana had affairs in response to the fact that her husband clearly didn't love her and was seeing Camilla virtually throughout their marriage. Was she supposed to stay celibate and just put up with it indefinitely?
Blossomtoes · 07/02/2022 17:02

Was she supposed to stay celibate and just put up with it indefinitely?

Of course not but you’d think she’d have had the decency to keep her hands off other women’s husbands, wouldn’t you?

Exactly. If anyone’s arguing that affairs make any of them too immoral to be accepted as royalty, then a) like many PPs have said, the aristocracy thrives on extramarital liaisons anyway, and b) an affair is an affair, even if poor sad Diana was shagging around because Charles was a twat first.
Monopolyiscrap · 07/02/2022 17:12

@Traumdeuter I think they all act pretty immoral, or most of them. At the soft end affairs, racism, and all the way through to alleged cash for honours, and alleged rape of a sex-trafficked teenager.
Remind me why we should fund this shower? Of right because of chariteeee

The order of events is disputed. It’s been said that Diana started having affairs before Charles started seeing Camilla again.

Monopolyiscrap · 07/02/2022 18:23

I dont believe that for a minute.

I think the bottom line is it was a marriage of convience, from both sides, it was loveless from the start.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2022 18:24

Got it in one @Lockdownbear.

Monopolyiscrap · 07/02/2022 18:25

No I think Diana did naively believe she was marrying someone who would grow to love her and be faithful.

That might have been part of what made her think it was a good idea. I cannot get over them getting engaged after 7 dates. They hardly knew one another.

Maybe there was a bit of a teen crush, he maybe thought she seemed good fun to be around, maybe they both thought they could make it work.
But ultimately it was a marriage of convince.

TragicMuse · 07/02/2022 18:39

I'm not being a bitch, I genuinely don't understand why anyone would be even remotely bothered about it, let alone calling it disgraceful or shocking.

What impact will it have on your life? I truly don't understand the obsession with keeping some kind of sacred memory of someone you didn't know...

Charles was in touch with her all the way through and spending time with her. It was clear he was still in love with her and not invested in the marriage.
A580Hojas · 07/02/2022 18:57

I honestly find it amazing that anyone has an opinion one way or the other. Unless you are the Queen, Charles or Camilla honestly wtf does it matter?

I know, it’s bizarre. Diana has been dead for 25 years and the Waleses contentedly married for 17. It’s like reading a 1996 copy of Hello magazine.
Benjispruce5 · 07/02/2022 19:32

It matters because they are in a position of privilege and we are paying for them. People in that position should lead by example otherwise they can crack on like the rest of us.

Exactly. We are supposed to look at them and feel they are better than us. They aren’t.
Blossomtoes · 07/02/2022 22:38

Are we? You learn something new every day, nobody’s ever told me that.

DaisyChains3 · 07/02/2022 22:52

What are they for then? Honestly? The whole point of them is that they set themselves up as special and above the rest of us.

Every country in the world has a state figurehead.

The UK monarchy is cheaper than some other countries presidents.

That isn’t the point of a monarchy. There’s something badly wrong with our education system if someone can go through it and come out thinking it is.
