What's the best peanut butter?

After years of buying bog standard supermarket cheapest peanut butter, I bought some Meridian last week and wow it is soooo good. It's accidentally picked up almond butter, so then bought chunky peanut butter. Can't believe I've been missing out on this stuff.

What's the best peanut butter, what shall I try next?

Thank you for the information, that's interesting. I had no idea, I've always put it in the fridge.

BearSoFair · 31/01/2022 11:51

Whole Earth organic. The regular is decent too but once I got subbed a jar of organic instead there was no going back!

PickAChew · 31/01/2022 12:49

@RustyBear

Manilife has 1.1g of salt per hundred grams, which is relatively high.
Who is eating 100g of peanut butter in one go, though?

Plus, there's probably more salt than that in the bread it's spread on.

An organic one. Peanuts have high levels of pesticides (insects find them yummy too).

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/01/2022 13:16

Whole earth crunchy is my favourite
Packed with big pieces of nuts and really thick texture

Ah, interesting- this is why the Organic ones taste better to me.

Whole earth crunchy, best peanut butter ever. @KaiKanWhenever
With Nutella on toast... known as snickers toast 😁

Are those who say the natural stuff separates keeping it in the fridge? Once you've mixed the oil in it stays mixed in the fridge. If it's is 100% peanut surely it'll possibly grow bacteria if it's not in the fridge, I think it's the sugar and salt which stop it needing to be refrigerated. If someone with a science background wants to correct me please do but that's what I've always understood.
No, it's the oil. Assume you don't store oil in the fridge?

Actually I spread mine on crispbread, which is 0.45g/100, but most wholemeal bread is around 0.9g/100. And to answer your previous post, of course no-one is likely to eat 100g of pb at once, but that's not the point. The point is that everyone should be trying to reduce the amount of salt in their diet -excessive salt is actually far more dangerous to health than excessive sugar- and it obviously makes sense to eat a lower-salt variety of a food if you can.
VitalsStable · 31/01/2022 15:22

Skippy. Although I'm sure I hear tree dwelling creatures perish every time I open the huge tub of the stuff.

12345FishAlive · 31/01/2022 17:04

So the oil is a preservative! It's never occurred to me to store oil in the fridge so yeah, I guess I don't need to store my peanut butter there. Thanks! I think I still will because I prefer it to be firm but it's good to know

My last message was a reply to @SunshineOnKeith

FelicityPike · 31/01/2022 17:05

Honest to God……Happy Shopper cheap stuff.

MissusArmitage · 31/01/2022 17:25

Pics. So so good.

From NZ though, so what you win on palm oil (none) you majorly fail on with air miles.

Grin glad to be of service! Yeah it won't last forever but it's the same rationale with oil, butter etc.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/01/2022 18:54

I like Meridian or Morrisons 100% peanut butter. DS prefers M&S own brand, which I admit is lovely and also good value.

Thanks for the PSAConfused
I think most people can figure out that any brand of PB with added salt in it will have salt in it.
We could all consume salt-free PB on crispbreads as you do, but some of us prefer to eat for pleasure Grin

Unless you're able to do a whole diet psychic analysis of every poster over the internet, critiquing a recommendation for a particular brand of PB on nutritional grounds is pretty meaningless.

Derrymum123 · 31/01/2022 19:01

Skippy.

So do I, which is why I have been really appreciating finding out how nice food actually tastes without all that added salt. 😁 You might have noticed how many other people have recommended Meridian (the salt free pb I eat) on grounds of taste.

RustyBear · 31/01/2022 19:06

And I make no apologies for the PSA.

madaboutrunning · 31/01/2022 19:07

Meridian, because it's just peanuts - no salt, sugar or palm oil. I hated PB for years but this has converted me.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 31/01/2022 19:14

Whole Earth smooth or crunchy for me. I really like Manilife too but prefer the consistency of Whole Earth. Surprised to see so many people say Meridian. I found that one so vile I had to bin it!

There are loads of PB without salt. If you RTFT you'll see my recommendations are also salt free.

There are also plenty of high Sal PB you haven't mentioned. It's not what this thread is about

It still stands that stating the obvious and then lecturing people on one single ingredient in their diet without the whole picture is nonsensical from a nutritional POV

My entire diet is basically no salt whole foods. It makes bugger all difference to my health whether I consume a tablespoon of PB with or without salt each day

RustyBear · 31/01/2022 19:34

Hardly ‘lecturing’ 😁 And it certainly wasn’t aimed at you personally. Anyway, it’s really not worth an argument.
