Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

I don't smoke and neither do my parents. One set of grandparents did, one didn't.

Jjacobb · 28/12/2021 19:44

Father smoked heavily his whole life. Mum gave up in her sixties.
Four children, none of us are smokers.

SleighbellsZ · 28/12/2021 19:44

One parent smokes, I smoke.

Yes, one did.
No I don't.
Put me right off tbh.

RedSquirrel111 · 28/12/2021 19:46

Be interested if anyone smokes who's parents/close family didn't.

I would say I was influenced by my peer group not parents. But in that peer group all the parents smoked....

My mum and dad both smoked, as did my aunt and grandfather. There was only my grandmother who didn't. I do remember my brother and I purposefully shaming mum and dad by making a huge deal about how horrible it was and how awful they smelled, etc, etc.

I never smoked. My brother smoked until his mid-30s and my mum eventually gave up too.

My dad smoked a pipe and I hated it. Yet I smoked cigarettes. So I'm that sense I don't think I was copying him, but it did perhaps normalise it for me.

They did. They still do.

I don't. I hate it.

Every single member of my family, cousins, aunts and uncles have been smokers or currently do smoke.

I don't.

Quite frankly anyone hearing my mum hacking up her lungs every morning wouldn't smoke either! (She quite about 10 years ago and still hacks every morning).

dashoflime · 28/12/2021 19:49

My parents don't smoke and I do.
I held out against all the peer pressure to smoke at school. Then started smoking cannabis as a young adult and got addicted to the tobacco in joints.
I don't smoke a lot and sometimes I go days and days without but the old neurotransmitters never give up wanting it. It's an on and off thing with me.
Not smoked cannabis in bloody years though.

Mrsjayy · 28/12/2021 19:49

Mum did I did until 6 years ago my mum stopped about the same time. My dds are adults have never smoked as far as I know!

Sally872 · 28/12/2021 19:50

My dh smokes and neither of his parents have. We both did but I stopped when pregnant and managed to continue not smoking after child arrived.

We started about 17 when at pubs and drinking. Tried it and liked it then eventually smoked more regularly.

My parents were very anti smoking but I was young and felt invincible so started anyway.

skyblueone · 28/12/2021 19:51

My mam was a heavy smoker when I was growing up, Dad has always been very anti smoking. My paternal grandparents were both smokers. I have never smoked, never tried it. DH's Mother smoked heavily when he was growing up, he's never smoked.

Hen2018 · 28/12/2021 19:51

No one in my extended family has ever smoked, apart from one of my granddads.

bloodywhitecat · 28/12/2021 19:51

Yes, both did. Mum had a real habit, dad was an occasional smoker.
No, I don't. Have never even tried it.

Mylittlepixie · 28/12/2021 19:51

I used to smoke from age 15-25. My parents dont. I think my dad used to in his teens/early 20s. But he stopped before i was born.

MusicTeacherSussex · 28/12/2021 19:51

That's really interesting! And reminded me of one person I know who's parents didn't smoke. He made a bet in 6th form that smoking wasn't addictive and all in the head. He was going to prove this by smoking for 6 weeks then quitting. As far as I know he still smokes now.... (early 40s)

There was no glamour attached. My granny smoked. It held no allure.

Almost2022 · 28/12/2021 19:53

Both parents were smokers. None of us siblings are smokers.

Neither PIL are smokers and neither are their children.

MindTheChristmasGap · 28/12/2021 19:53

And it's obviously very addictive.
