Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

Of course nicotine is addictive!

Both my parents smoked but I never did. My sister and I nagged my parents to stop when we started secondary schools and began to learn about how it was horrible for the lungs (this is in the 70s). They both gave up when I was 13.
I always thought I’d never go out with a smoker but ended up falling in love and marrying one. He did give up though after a few years.

thingymaboob · 28/12/2021 21:51

Both parents smoked heavily inside house. Both parents died prematurely of smoking related illnesses in their 40s and 60s (throat cancer and heart disease). I smoked socially at university but then stopped when I trained as a paramedic and I absolutely hate smoking now. Smoking makes me really angry.

batmanladybird · 28/12/2021 21:53

@LiloandTwitch

They did. They still do.

I don't. I hate it.

This. And so interesting know someone and both she and her dh "socially smoke" and wouldn't you know, her kids also do now.

I hate it, smells. Bad for you. Bad for those around you. Bad for your wallet.

My parents both smoked from when they were teenagers. My grandad (mum's dad) also smoked, from the age of 10. He died aged 70 from lung cancer; my mum died from late diagnosed cancer aged 54 (possibly lung, it had metastasized so it's origin was unclear).

I don't smoke and never have, nor do my adult children.

surreymum89 · 28/12/2021 21:59

When I was growing up my mum and stepdad both smoked ( my mum from a young teenager), both still do now, me and my brother do not smoke.

My OH mum and stepdad did not smoke at all, not once and both him and his sister now smoke.

CoodleMoodle · 28/12/2021 22:00

Never smoked. Neither has DH.

My Dad smoked. Don't know if he still does. My DGM (maternal) did until she died. DGF (paternal) smoked a pipe until his dementia got too bad. I have three uncles and an aunt, all of them smoke or have done. FIL does. MIL did but gave up years and years ago.

DM made anybody who wanted to smoke do it outside, and MIL made FIL take it outside as soon as the first grandchild came along.

ldontWanna · 28/12/2021 22:01

I don't get the obsession with mentioning how expensive it is.

There are hundreds of addictions/bad habits that are stupidly expensive and some of them are even encouraged and people are cheered on to engage in them.

I also wonder how many of the posters going bad ,bad ,bad are overweight,or drink regularly or both.

megletthesecond · 28/12/2021 22:02

No, no one in my family smoked.
And no.

KrispyBrussels · 28/12/2021 22:03

My family would say they didn't particularly LIKE smoking but they felt unable to give it up.
So from where I was sitting it looked like money going up in smoke,!

KrispyBrussels · 28/12/2021 22:04

Especially when a theme of my childhood was not having enough money..

TheHumanSatsuma · 28/12/2021 22:04

Both smoked heavily, my sister stated at 11!
I’ve always hated the smell and have never smoked.

RaininSummer · 28/12/2021 22:07

My dad practically chain smoked and I spent my childhood in a smoke haze. Never smoked.

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2021 22:07

My DF smoked but gave up in his 40s. He's the only one of his siblings still alive into his 80s, his siblings all died of smoking related illnesses. DH's dad smoked but also gave up in mid-life.

Neither DH nor I have never smoked, but unfortunately two of our 20-something DC do. I absolutely detest it and hope they decide to stop, but obviously that has to be their decision.

noblegreenk · 28/12/2021 22:18

Both parents were heavy 40 a day smokers when I was growing up. I moved out in my early 20s and started smoking myself within weeks. I think I was addicted to the secondhand smoke and missed it. Dad had a heart attack 8 years ago and lives much more healthily now, but still smokes 5 a day. Mum died of lung cancer 7 years ago. I still smoke, but only 5-7 a day, and outside - not around my daughter. I'm hoping to quit in the new year.

usernotfound0000 · 28/12/2021 22:19

Both parents were very heavy smokers, I never took it up. I've had the odd one when out drinking in the days that it was allowed inside but haven't done that in well over 10 years.
I absolutely hated the smell growing up and was always embarrassed having friends round as the house stunk. I found it much worse when I moved out too as I realised how bad it was when I went back into it.
DF has COPD and DM died of lung cancer, if that's not enough to put you off...

EmergencyPoncho · 28/12/2021 22:36

Mine did, chain smokers, both stopped when I was well in my teens. I never have, I don't object to other people doing it. I've tried it, just couldn't do it.

amusedbush · 28/12/2021 22:47

My mum smoked for years, as did all of her siblings and my grandad. I started at 13 and stopped when I was 23. DB smokes like a chimney.

DH’s parents both smoked heavily his whole life and he has never smoked.

BashfulClam · 28/12/2021 22:53

My parents were heavy chain smokers. Spending a fortune on cigarettes but grudging even paying towards the glasses I needed to be able to see properly or shoes that fit . The house and all our clothes reeked of smoke constantly. I am
Vehemently anti smoking and always will be and wonder what damage they did to my lungs can my
Mum smoked from pregnancy until my early 20’s. They smoked 60+ a day each. My brother does smoke and has been trying to quote properly for 20 years. I equate it with selfishness due to how skint it made my parents, due to smoking they struggled to afford the basics we needed but always found money for cigarettes.

CarrieBlue · 28/12/2021 23:01

DM smoked cigarettes (still does but thinks I don’t know she still does). DF smoked the occasional cigar (and died from throat cancer). I’ve never smoked at all, cigarette butts make me physically recoil. I’d be devastated if either of the DC started smoking.

Timeisavirtue · 28/12/2021 23:02

my mum stopped after my brother was born (3 years younger) , my dad still smokes as far as I know. Both sets of grandparents, one were smokers but stopped when I was very young and the others still smoke as far as I know. I don’t smoke nor does my brother. I did try it once when I was 8 and my dad had left it in the ashtray whilst he quickly did something. I took a puff and coughed my guts up....

Crunchymum · 28/12/2021 23:11

My parents both smoked. Both gave up 25/30 years ago.

4 children, now aged between 45-35yo.

  • 1 ex smoker (smoked for 15 years, 10 years a non smoker).
  • 1 a smoker of 20+ years
  • 1 a sporadic smoker (when they drink, not often)
  • 1 never smoked

DP parents both smokers, 6 DC (age range 45-30yo)

  • 3 smokers of 20 years +
  • 1 never smoked
  • 1 ex smoker
  • 1 sporadic smoker
BogRollBOGOF · 29/12/2021 00:58

Dad smoked cigars until a heart attack in his 40s. It bought him a few more years... but swapping for more sweets and alcohol wasn't much better...

Mum was a lighter smoker and is still going 30 years later.

I'm the only one in my family over 30 who's never smoked. Most in their 40s-60s have at some point, either giving up or trying to in phases. Actually DN in 20s smokes (rather than vaping)

I hated the smell, and losing my dad so young, I have never had any desire or interest in putting a cigaretre to my lips. I also think it caused me breathing difficulties with exercise until I finally lived in a smoke-free environment in my 20s. It was still common for my age group being teens in the 90s.

PermanentTemporary · 29/12/2021 01:01

My mum smoked until i was about 3. My dad smoked all his life until he was in hospital for his last illness. I absolutely loathed everything about it, still do.

Thepowerofthelook · 29/12/2021 01:27

No and no.
However 2 of my siblings smoke.
Had one set of grandparents who were not smokers and one set that were smokers.

MorkandMandy · 29/12/2021 01:28

Both parents did. All 4 of us then did despite hating it growing up. I quit 6 years ago.
