Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

Neither parent smoked but myself and my sibling used to.

evilharpy · 28/12/2021 20:08

Mine never did. I smoked for quite a few years but gave up when I was about 24 or 25 and never smoked again.

I had one auntie who was an occasional smoker and none of her children smoked. Another auntie and her husband both smoked until they were in their fifties and none of their children smoked either.

GoldMoon · 28/12/2021 20:09

My parents smoked . In the house and in the car in front of us .
I have never smoked . My thq parents smoked , he doesn't.
As an adult my dm apologised to me for smoking in front of me as a child. I wouldn't have anyone smoke in front of my dc , and absolutely not in my house.

I don't smoke. My parents didn't smoke either, dad gave up before we were born. We lived with my granny who smoked.

DH smokes, his dad smoked when DH was young. I'd assume my DC will end up smoking too.

BlackCatz · 28/12/2021 20:09

Yes, my DM has always been a smoker (and still does now). At least 5 a day.

I've never smoked.

SlipperTripper · 28/12/2021 20:09

Every adult around me, parents, stepparents, grandparents, aunts, godparents, parent's friends - all smoked.

I started smoking age 14, told parents straightaway, not like there was anything they could say 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gave up age 22, started again age 31 (stress reaction) - smoked for 1.5 years, stoped during pregnancy, started after losing my daughter, stopped again now I'm pregnant again. Not planning to start again. Don't want the cycle to repeat itself 🤞

PizzasPlease · 28/12/2021 20:10

My parents have never smoked, grandparents never smoked, aunts, uncle's, cousins never smoked. I can only think of one family friend who visited 3 times a year for a day or two who smoked.

I smoke (although I'm down to 2-3 a day).

MindTheChristmasGap · 28/12/2021 20:10

My adult child smokes.

Strawberry0909 · 28/12/2021 20:13

Both parents smoke, I did for around 10 years before quitting, brother does occasionally

Neither of my dad's parents smoked but he's smoked since he was around 15

frogsbreath · 28/12/2021 20:13

My parents smoke. I don't and neither do any of my 5 siblings.

DH smokes, his parents smoke and his 2 siblings do too. None of his adult nephews and nieces smoke.

Violetroselily · 28/12/2021 20:16

My mum is a smoker, I'm not and nor are my siblings. I dabbled briefly as a teenager - and I'm sure my siblings would have done too - but I don't think that was influenced by my mum smoking.

Now I find it absolutely repulsive and can't bear bearing around people that smell of fags

Newbabynewhouse · 28/12/2021 20:17

I dont know anyone who smokes whos parents didnt...

RubyJack · 28/12/2021 20:18

Yes and no

RedSquirrel111 · 28/12/2021 20:18

@Newbabynewhouse

I dont know anyone who smokes whos parents didnt...
That's what interested me.

Plenty of people who DONT smoke even though parents did.

Very few who DO smoke and their parents didn't.

Seems to be holding out in the replies too

Neither of my parents smoked; they were VERY anti-smoking. My brother and I both started smoking in our teens (lots of our friends smoked too, this was early-mid 90s). I carried on smoking for about 25 years unfortunately, before finally managing to stop.

delilahbucket · 28/12/2021 20:22

My parents didn't but my sister, 12 years older, did/does and I idolised her. As a result I also started smoking in my mid teens and she encouraged me. She has always taken various drugs as well and encouraged me to try these too. Fortunately I wasn't daft and didn't get into drugs, but smoking stayed with me on and off for 10 years. I've been stopped nearly 12 years and I don't miss it at all. Stepping away from the toxic relationship I had with my sister made me realise I didn't want to be anything like her, ever.

HolesInMySocks · 28/12/2021 20:23

Dad did. Mum didn't.. Myself and dsis don't, my brother does.

Inlaws both smoked. Dh used to. Sil doesn't

waterlego · 28/12/2021 20:23

It’s about 5 years since I stopped but my kids remember me smoking (incidentally, I did stop for the duration of both pregnancies). Both are teens now and neither smoke, though DS (13) tried vaping. DD (16) is vehemently anti smoking.

Plumedenom · 28/12/2021 20:28

My parents didn't and neither do I. Caveat... occasionally, I do smoke. I'm talking maybe a pack a year. I like it now and then socially but I'm not a smoker. I do think it's true that my parents drummed it into me that it would kill you and I didn't even try one until age 22. I do think parents lead by example, not words.

InFiveMins · 28/12/2021 20:28

My parents did. My older sister did. I did for a short while in my early 20s - quit after 4 or 5 years.

None of us smoke anymore.

Riverlee · 28/12/2021 20:29

No and no

Abouttimemum · 28/12/2021 20:31

My parents didn’t. I didn’t. All my sisters did, from mid teens. All quit when pregnant and never started again.
It seemed to be linked to their friendship groups, who all smoked. None of my friends smoked but I was a lot younger and it wasn’t the done thing any more.

Tomlettegregg · 28/12/2021 20:31

Mum didn't dad didn't. Neither my sister or I have but my brother did for about 10 years.

Abouttimemum · 28/12/2021 20:32

And yes none of them smoke any more, nor do their husbands / partners / kids / step kids.

dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 20:34

My mum and dad and a brother smoked and I hated the smell so never have. Now that brother doesn't smoke but the other 2 do and my sister now vapes with the odd cigarette if she's out.
