Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

My dad smoked but gave up in his 40s or 50s I can't quite remember. I occasionally had a cigarette or cigar with a drink socially at uni so say one or two a week, never got addicted though and that was like 20 years ago. Wouldn't do it now though as you can't smoke indoors at pubs etc now plus it doesn't appeal to me now anyway.

A580Hojas · 28/12/2021 19:53

Both parents and all my aunts and uncles smoked very heavily (they were born in the 1930s and 1940s) as did my friend's parents and all adults really. You were in a small minority if you did not smoke until maybe 1980? something like that.

I have had a lifelong battle with nicotine addiction since I started smoking at the age of 22 (quite a late starter). I don't know why but no matter how long I give up for (years at a time many times, both pregnancies, I think the last effort was 7 years+ without a single cigarette) it still keeps coming back to bite me.

Mum and dad really heavy smokers.
My brother and I are non smokers.
We remember long drives in our youth with both puffing away in the front of the car with the windows closed.
Put us off for life.

One parent smoked. No grandparents did. I smoke my brother never has.

Betty000 · 28/12/2021 19:55

I do, my parents did not.

RedSquirrel111 · 28/12/2021 19:55

@Mrsjayy

All mums family smoked and it was the norm to smoke in the house.
Yes, all my family smoked in the house. And in the car with the windows up Envy From about 15 I smoked in the living room with them. Bit unthinkable now!

Yes, my parents smoked very, very heavily - about 50 a day each at one point. I hated it. I stank of smoke. I'd never smoke.

golddustwomen · 28/12/2021 19:55

One parent did, I do. So does my sibling.

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 28/12/2021 19:56

Yes they did (for years, both have quit now).

No I don't (never have).

Monkeytennis97 · 28/12/2021 19:59

DFather smoked until I was about 1. Dmum didn't. Nan did (about 3 a day). I did from 16-40 and have just given up vaping as I approach 50. Neither of my siblings smoked.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 28/12/2021 19:59

Both parents, stepparents, grandparents aunts and uncles.

Me and my siblings and most of my cousins are non-smokers

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 28/12/2021 19:59

Both parents did and I smoked from the age of 14 to 43.
Luckily my children have never smoked

MeanderingGently · 28/12/2021 20:00

My parents both smoked quite heavily. My father also smoked the odd cigar too.
I don't smoke, never have, was never tempted to, even at school behind the bike shed. Thought the whole thing was disgusting. My sister has never smoked either.

As the years went by, smoking was deemed bad for health and my parents cut down, they also started smoking outdoors so we didn't get passive smoke, although we were teenagers by then. When I had my own children they would never smoke near them or in my house, it was their decision, not mine.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 28/12/2021 20:00

Sorry, that should have said all the adults in my family smoked.

dollybird · 28/12/2021 20:00

My dad smoked but gave up before I can remember (but after I was born). Mum never smoked and nor have I (tried the odd one). Both my younger brothers smoked. Youngest now vapes, the other still smokes at 44. Started when he was 14. DH smoked from 17, but gave up the year he met me (when he was 23). His dad smoked heavily, but gave up before I met him. DS, 19 did smoke and now vapes, although think he does have an occasional cigarette 😔. DD, 18 has never smoked 🤞🤞

Kitkat151 · 28/12/2021 20:00

My grandad smoked and gave up at 75
My mum smoked and gave up at 35
I smoked and gave up at 26
Everyone else in my close and wider family were/are non smokers...my siblings included

EBearhug · 28/12/2021 20:01

I don't. Both parents did - my mother quit in her 40s, Dad after a heart attack in his early 50s. I've smoked a handful of spliffs, but that's all. 1 pair of grandparents met in the baccy factory.

Ex boyfriend smoked from age 14 or so. His mother died of lung cancer, as did his aunt and uncle. He smokes about 50 a day and earlier this year had a leg cut off because of it. He's early 50s, and suspect won't make 60.

PlanetNormal · 28/12/2021 20:02

Both my parents, all their friends and three of my grandparents smoked, as did almost all working class people in Derbyshire in the 1980s.

I started ‘social smoking’ when I was a student with a PT bar job, because everyone did. I quit when the government put the price of a pack of 20 up to £3, because I was too tight to pay that much for fags.

roarfeckingroarr · 28/12/2021 20:02

Parents stopped before I was born. I smoked at boarding school but gave up before I turned 25 because it's grim.

DS's dad smokes. I'll be devastated if DS smokes.

kokokokokokokokoko · 28/12/2021 20:03

both parents smoke, neither me or my brother do! three of four grandparents also smoked.

BillywigSting · 28/12/2021 20:03

I used to smoke, started around 13/14 stealing my dad's cigarettes. Quit when pregnant with ds who is now 8. Still have the occasional one on a night out but not regularly anymore.

Both parents smoked when I was growing up, as did grandfathers on both sides.

Dm and grandmothers all quit. Df still puffs away.

Incedentally, a while ago a colleague came back from her break smelling of cigarettes and coffee. I told her so and she was most put out but I said to her i meant no offence as I really liked the smell because it smelled like home. (both parents also drank moka pot coffee in the 90s when this was quite rare)

bigbluebus · 28/12/2021 20:03

Both my parents smoked (although my DF did give up cigarettes in favour of cigars). Both my Grandmothers also smoked. I have never smoked and neither have my 2 siblings. And I grew up in the time when you were dispatched to the corner shop to buy your parents fags!
In my late teens/early 20's I hung around with a couple of lads who smoked (even dated one of then for a while) and I was never tempted to take it up.

DH also said both his parents smoked too. DH has never smoked and neither have his 2 siblings.

KohlaParasaurus · 28/12/2021 20:03

My parents were very anti-smoking and it never occurred to me to start smoking. My XH was also a non-smoker with non-smoking parents, and my children's stepfather has never smoked.

Three of my own children smoke, two regularly and one occasionally.

dashoflime · 28/12/2021 20:05

He was going to prove this by smoking for 6 weeks then quitting.
As far as I know he still smokes now.... (early 40s)

Doh! I wonder if we took it more lightly because we hadn't seen an adult struggle with addiction.
