Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

3 grandparents were smokers and my dad was a heavy smoker . My parents always said if any of us ( there are 3 of us ) wanted to smoke to feel free to just ask for a cigarette and they’d give them to us to smoke at home - none of us ever smoked . My dad died at 51 of a heart attack and I was diagnosed with emphysema at 50 .

Unreasonabubble · 29/12/2021 01:44

All my parents smoked (step and natural). I babysat for a couple who paid me in cash and cigarettes. I used to pinch my Dad's cigarettes from a fancy box that had been presented to him.

My DD started smoking early (16) my DS not until he was 25.

I am doing my utmost to stop. It is so hard but I will do it. I hope that when I do stop for a significant period, they will stop too.

AlwaysLatte · 29/12/2021 01:46

My parents were both smokers. I don't smoke, because growing up I hated it!

Both parents smoked, and my siblings and I also smoked.

All of dads 9 siblings smoked, 5 of them including dad have died so far with severe copd or lung disease which came on later in life even though they stopped smoking in their late 40s.

Mums siblings didnt smoke, but her mum did and smoked until she was 98 with no apparent smoking related health concerns.

I have one sister nearing 50 who still smokes, the rest of us gave them up in our early 30s when they started banning it in pubs, people stopped smoking inside etc.

Thankfully not one of the latest generation of dc, nieces and nephews have taken it up. 🤞🏼

Topseyt · 29/12/2021 02:22

My parents were both very heavy smokers. Neither my sister nor I ever have.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 29/12/2021 02:26

My dad didn't smoke, my mum used to smoke a silk cut ciggie every now and then.

I smoke, 2 of my brothers smoke and my eldest brother vapes.

My brothers are all a lot older than me, so there may be some influence there, there was peer pressure as well, as a few of my friends smoked, we all started at about 14,i know I need to pack it in, but not right now.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 29/12/2021 03:18

Parents smoked, brother smoked, I haven’t ever smoked and I never will.

My mum quit when I was in my mid twenties, my dad when I got about thirty.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 29/12/2021 03:23

My mum had an occasional cigarette but my dad was a very heavy smoker At his absolute worst he was chain smoking between 180-200 per day. He also had a pipe and chewed tobacco. He tried giving up many times but it pulled him back each time. It was an addiction for him.

We got to say goodbye to him at a young age due to smoking, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in March and he was dead in May. If he had lived till the following August he would have been approx 50 years smoking. He started when he was 9.

As a result I haven't smoked nor my brother.

Thegiftthatkeepsongiving · 29/12/2021 03:27

Both my parents never smoked and neither do I. DH’s mother smoked and all his brothers smoke but he is the only one that never picked up the habit.

Anystarinthesky · 29/12/2021 03:28

Both my parents smoked like chimneys in the house when I was a child. The ceilings were stained with brown.
It put me right off! My DM had stained teeth and fingers, and the hacking coughs they had in the morning were awful. Also, DM used to speak to us with a ciggie hanging out of her mouth, which I thought looked awful!
They used to smoke in the car too and I was always sick.
My Dsis started smoking when she was about 16.
They all ended up stopping eventually for health reasons.
I have mature onset asthma so I am glad I never smoked.

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/12/2021 03:44

I smoke but parents didn't, my 2 DDS don't smoke.

autieok · 29/12/2021 05:50

My parents did so did grandparents on one side and older sis. I started when I was 17. Quit at 30. My ex (dd dad) smokes my dh doesn't. My two adult dd don't smoke.

Herecomesthesun70 · 29/12/2021 09:34

Both my parents smoke the health issues are terrible. COPD with DF gum disease with DM along with the aged skin and sunken complexion
Not to mention the smell on them. I haven't hugged either of them in years because it makes me wretch. The house smells the car smells
I have never smoked but DB did for a while

SmallElephant · 29/12/2021 09:37

Parents didn't smoke, my brother and I don't either.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 29/12/2021 09:39

Parents don't, my sister and I do.

My paternal grandparents smoked heavily if that's of interest. Maternal grandparents didn't as far as I know. My uncle on my mum's side did.

MuchTooTired · 29/12/2021 09:40

My mum smoked on and off, and my dad smoked cigars occasionally. My aunt (who was like a second mum to me) smoked too.

I always loved the smell of cigarette smoke even as a child, and smoked as soon as I was legally old enough at 16. I’ve given up on and off in the last 20 years, but it’s a constant struggle. I’m currently 2 months into vaping, but have had a couple of smokes in that time which I’m quite ashamed of. My Dsis has never smoked, and my Dbro smokes and uses drugs.

Problem is, I just really love smoking. I don’t want to die (I’ve young children) and I don’t want them smoking either.

merrygoround51 · 29/12/2021 09:48

My mother smoked and still smokes heavily.

All 3 of us have asthma that required hospitalisation as children. DM never stopped smoking in the house despite this which has always amazed me.
We have zero tolerance for her smoking now but her house her rules so she will smoke when we are there

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/12/2021 09:49

Ddad smoked in excess of 40 per day. DM never smoked (I think she tried it but didn't like it).
DSIS 1 smoked socially until she met became pregnant. DSIS 2 smokes regularly. I have never smoked.
Ddad died of throat cancer.

None of my grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, etc smoke. Nor do I, my brother, or my cousin's.

My partner's parents don't smoke, but some grandparents, and aunts/uncles did/do. Neither him or his sister smoke but his brother does.

emilyintheSE · 04/02/2022 10:39

Both parents were heavy smokers. Mum quit cold turkey when I was in my late teens.

Non-smoker here.

CharSiu · 04/02/2022 11:00

Both parents smoked though my Father stopped in his late forties. He lived till he was 84 and my Mother till she was 93, she only stopped towards the very end of her life.

I hate smoking.

Of the six of us four smoked, one of those stopped in her forties. One sibling has died aged 70 of kidney failure linked to diabetes. Of the grandchildren 7 don’t and 3 do. Two great grandchildren have reached adulthood and they don’t.

They showed us a horrible public information film when I was about 12 at school where they cut open a diseased lung and poured tar out of a glass beaker, it scared me but I guess it worked.

Fordian · 04/02/2022 22:59

Cut to the end, sorry.

My entire family smoked heavily. My DB, 2 years older than me, smoked from 11 to today, 60. I sort of didn't, I'd share a fag with mum aged 15-16 as we chatted in the conservatory, I smoked 'OP's' at the pub (other people's 😂) aged 15-18; dabbled off and on but stopped, oddly, in a greasy spoon in Melbourne aged 25 😶 when a mate was' getting over' a doomed relationship and was chain smoking. Looked grim; I said to myself 'stop while you're not yet addicted!'. So I did.

However, I believe I have a low level alcohol addiction. As has my DB.

Yourinmyspot · 04/02/2022 23:08

My Dad smoked cigarettes when I was quite young, I have memories of him and my Granny having a cigar after Christmas dinner too. My Dad then smoked a pipe instead for a few years but only on a Wednesday at the pub and the weekends. He must have stopped altogether about 30 years ago now.

My Mum never smoked and I never have, though I think my siblings did for a bit at times.

blyn72 · 05/02/2022 02:31

My dad smoked quite heavily so I sat in a room with him all evening in front of the TV, surrounded by smoke, when I was at home. I smoked but gave it up eventually - was better for giving it up too.
