Did your parents smoke and do you?

Off the back of the news report today...

I started smoking at 13/14 (year 9). One parent smoked, and one set of grandparents who I idolised. Perhaps a bit obvious, but never thought about the connection before.

I know of lots of people who don't smoke who's parents did. But thinking about smokers, every single one I can think of one or both parents smoked.

Father born 1920s didn’t. He said it was a filthy habit. My mother has never smoked either. Nor do I.

PatchworkElmer · 28/12/2021 20:36

One of my friends smokes when neither of his parents ever have. I think he’s a very rare case though!!

I don’t smoke and my parents don’t either. One of my grandparents did though. I would be absolutely devastated if DS did 😔

MrsTimRiggins · 28/12/2021 20:36

I don’t smoke, nor did my parents. Only my paternal grandfather smoked, and that was before I was born, altho it was the cause of his death in the end.

My husband does smoke, his dad smokes and mum used to smoke when he was a child. His two brothers don’t smoke.

@MindTheChristmasGap

My adult child smokes.
And we don't and never have.
User48751490 · 28/12/2021 20:37

Mum used to. Dad never has. Brother does. I never have.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/12/2021 20:37

I'm 53.
Literally every adult I knew as a child smoked.
My parents gave up in their early 40s. My siblings smoked, I never did.
Me and dh have never smoked.ironically both our daughters did!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/12/2021 20:38

Both my parents and grandparents had all quit before I was born. None of DPs family did either. We both smoked but quit recently

TwoBlueFish · 28/12/2021 20:41

Both parents smoked, I’ve never smoked. All my siblings (5 of them) have smoked socially, at least 1 still smokes. My DM still smokes, Dad gave up about 10 years ago.

Deadringer · 28/12/2021 20:44

I am not sure it really makes any difference. My parents didn't smoke and neither do i, but all of my siblings smoke, or smoked for years before giving up. Both of dh's parents smoked, but none of their dc do. None of the adult grandchildren do either, including our dc.

thefatpotato · 28/12/2021 20:44

Mum does, none of us do (I'm one of four).

FIL used to, a lot. MIL never has (as far as I'm aware). DH doesn't and never has, BIL does, a lot.

Fallagain · 28/12/2021 20:46

Yes, no.

I have always resent it, especially the smoking around us. Especially when I became a mother myself. My Mum is now very ill and has been for years with COPD. She has a limited life and will die early due to her smoking.

ReeceWitherfork · 28/12/2021 20:46

Both of mine did. I hated it as a child, so no neither my brother or I smoked.

junebirthdaygirl · 28/12/2021 20:47

Neither of my dps smoked. I never smoked. My ds smokes (unfortunately)
My dh had 2 smoking parents. None of the 6 dc smoked. They all despised it

TheDuchessOfMN · 28/12/2021 20:48

I vaguely remember my parents smoking when I was very young. Mum smoked cigarettes, dad a pipe. I think they both quit in their 40s.

My siblings and I are all non smokers

Simonjt · 28/12/2021 20:48

No one in my family smoked, I did, well, I do still occasionally on a night out.

Groovee · 28/12/2021 20:52

My dad smoked until I was 5, my mum until I was 9. 2 of my siblings still smoke and 1 gave up a long time ago. I have never even tried a cigarette.

WLAH · 28/12/2021 20:53

No and no

EngTech · 28/12/2021 20:55

Both mine did, I never have - Saved the money and bought my first car with cash I saved 👍👍😎

Sirzy · 28/12/2021 20:55

My grandparents all smoked.

My aunts and uncles (4 in total) all smoked but neither of my parents did.

Me and my sister don’t smoke and never have. 3 out of 6 cousins do (all with at least 1 smoking parent)

gettingolderandgrumpy · 28/12/2021 20:55

I absolutely hated smoking even as a child even when as a teen and you tried smoking yourself I still didn’t like it , my dad did still does smoke very heavily.
When my dc were little and my dad would walk in with a cig I’d hate it . My db smokes still lives at home most probably because he has no money as spent all on smoking. Filthy habit imo very anti smoking in case you can’t tell .

caringcarer · 28/12/2021 20:56

Neither parent smoked I don't smoke nor my 4 sisters either. None of my 3 children smoke either. A filthy habit. My dh does not smoke but both his parents did and he hated it.

SheWolfOFFrancee · 28/12/2021 20:56

Both parents smoked heavily but I’ve never smoked.

My core friendship group from 15+ all smoked including 6th form boyfriend (we were together 7 years) and I was the only one who never smoked. Most other non smokers that joined the group would eventually start

itssquidstella · 28/12/2021 20:57

My mum smoked until I was 12. I hated it as a child but started smoking myself at 14 and smoked on and off (increasingly off) until I was about 32. I only smoked 'properly' from 18-25 but was a "social smoker" after that.

Heruka · 28/12/2021 20:58

One parent smoked and I did from 17 for about 10yrs. I was a preachy child that hated it but still ended up.

itssquidstella · 28/12/2021 20:59

Peer group definitely more influential for me: I started because I wanted to be accepted by the 'cool' crowd, all of whom smoked (and most of whose parents smoked too). I think smoking is more a class issue tbh; I know far fewer middle class people who have carried on smoking into adulthood than working class people.
