French Man has fingers removed to resemble "alien."

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but it popped up on my news feed and I initially thought it would make a lighthearted "Oh look, a man identifying as an alien now" post.

Reading the article it's absolutely horrific. This poor man needs help, not people indulging his delusions. The surgeons involved need struck off, whatever country they're in.

TW - images are disturbing.

I'm almost as shocked the paper has this under "Beauty, Cosmetic Surgery"

@daisyjgrey

What was the point of this thread, OP? Chance for a load of judgmental pearl clutchers to feign care for a guy who's quite merrily living his life without their input?

There is also a lot of judgement in saying 'judgmental pearl clutchers'. It's like a dog whistle way of saying middle aged busybody or Karen.

He's quite clearly not 'merrily' living his life. Stop pretending otherwise just to come across as 'cool'.

MoveAhoy · 25/11/2021 19:06

It doesn't matter if it hurts no one who else.
It doesn't matter if it is given a fancy name.

It is still harm.

Whether it is acceptable or low risk harm or whether it is ethical for professionals to take part in these forms of harm is an OK topic for debate.

If I wanted to have my ears shaped to that of an elf... and then wanted to have a lip plate put it... howabout some subdermal implants on my forehead too? How on earth am judged ill enough to be sectioned? When I wanted all these things?

"His mods are not leading to suicide."

So he has to kill himself before we realise something is wrong???

And yes all the things on your list are considered self harm or harming others. I mean there's controversy around most of them for this very reason.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/11/2021 19:10

And it hurts other people, how

The surgeon who later gets sued ?

The family akd friends who have to run around after him.while he recovers?

The people who have to drive him to physio appointments for a self inflicted disability?

The person who has to wait longer for their physio appointment because the drs schedule is now full?

All affected

He has an image in his head on how he wants to look. So he is seeking to do that. Not your business.
CommonRoom · 25/11/2021 19:14

@XenoBitch

I would say that 'mods' like breast implants and lip fillers are done by people who want to enhance what they already have. They simply want to be an enhanced version of themselves.

Trans surgery and this alien hand man are different. Both have a belief that surgery will transform them into another sex or species. That belief is a distortion of reality, just the same as if we agree with an anorexic that they are fat and help them lose weight.

I'm surprised he found any doctors to do this?
XenoBitch · 25/11/2021 19:17

I'm surprised he found any doctors to do this?

Most likely fellow body modifications pals. I read he went abroad too, so what he had done was totally legal.

MoveAhoy · 25/11/2021 19:20

So he does have to harm himself to the point of death for it to become your business. That's what you actually mean?

So you don't actually care that there's a person behind the idea in the person's head.
You only care that the idea of the person is honoured.

There's honestly too much to unpack in your snippets which you believe say, he's fine, leave him alone.

abcdeg · 25/11/2021 19:23

*Do you say the same about any one getting lip fillers? Or breast implants? Butt implants? Or breast reductions? Or circumcision? Or any sort or surgery for trans dysphoria?

His mods are not leading to suicide!*

XXXXXXXX

you're taking a simplistic view but in reality his appearance is scary for a lot of people, his modifications are very extreme. You'll struggle to find a job looking like that, you're job becomes being this character. He's made himself disabled, he can't even write his own name anymore. He cut his nose off Confused

This is not like lips or breasts (especially a reduction, not even implants, idk why you'd even use that as an example tbh). I don't like circumcision either but that's still nothing like this.

EishetChayil · 25/11/2021 19:24

I'll be flamed for this no doubt, but how is this any different from if he believed he was a woman and had his penis inverted to make an approximation of a vagina?

WonderfulYou · 25/11/2021 19:43

Whoever agreed to operate on this extremely sick individual should be struck off.

I agree.
He’s mentally ill. Surely there is a cut off point where you say cutting nose, ears and fingers off are going to do you harm so I’m not going to do it.

This is nothing like wanting bigger breasts or fuller lips to have better versions of what you already have - this is someone who doesn’t want to be human anymore and is self harming to the extreme.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/11/2021 19:51

So who picks up the tab when there are infections and complications and he's flown back to his home country?

In the search for the limited number of people prepared to do this at great expense , what incentive is there for these people to get it right?

If a hair dresser screws up your hair there's no shortage if others to try. But I can't imagine there being a plentiful number of people to choose from here. Which means whatever happens he has no choice choice go back as who else will.do it? This means there's no incentive to get it right because they get the money for the repairs too.

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2021 19:56

I haven’t looked at pic but on surgery I assume he needs GA? Who has skills for that

Or am I missing something. Have no idea about it

Surely that would be his problem, and not yours. I am just baffled as to how anyone is looking at this man and making what he does to his body, their business.
daisyjgrey · 25/11/2021 19:57

@Whatwouldscullydo

His medical insurance presumably. Assuming he has any issues, which he may not.

No GA for body mods as the people carrying them out are not licensed to use anaesthetic. They can only use OTC stuff.
Whatwouldscullydo · 25/11/2021 20:05

Again, drs appointments, hospital beds being taken up etc makes ir someone else's problem.

What happens when he becomes too tolerant to pain meds or builds up a resistance to antibiotics causing problems when he needs it fir actual illness as a result of any of this

Body mods are not carried out in hospitals. They are carried out in tattoo parlours etc. They are not licensed to use anaesthetics. They are not using up beds in hospitals.

If you can get angry about the man in the OP, then surely you are just as mad at people who do self harm through no fault of their own.

WinterCarlisle · 25/11/2021 20:11

All I have taken from this article is his rather dull pale blue polo shirt.

I was at least expected something silver and a little more exciting 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/11/2021 20:17

Of course I'm not mad at people who self harm. After all they need help not anger ajd judgement.

Like this guy.

I was responding to you saying it doesn't hurt anyone even when he's chopping off parts of his healthy body.

First up mentally stable people don't remove body parts.

Secondly complications and infections do in fact take up beds and appointments so it's not a harmless consequence free decision.

And thirdly it is incredibly disturbing that the only point anyone you seek to think it crosses the line is if he kills himself.

MoveAhoy · 25/11/2021 20:25

I'm yet to see any post express anger with or at this individual.
Annoyance with any healthcare professional or system which would enable what he has done to himself maybe.

Do you perceive opposition to your ideas as people being angry with you?

daisyjgrey · 25/11/2021 20:40

@Whatwouldscullydo

What, the fictional antibiotic resistance and painkiller tolerance? To accompany the plethora of hypothetical mental health issues he's also apparently got?

I would imagine that if someone who has undertaken body modification hypothetically got an infection and needed to use a hypothetical hospital bed, they would be wildly outnumbered by people in hospital who have done things to also negatively impact their health. Hurling yourself down a black ski run and needing ankle surgery is no more noble than needing antibiotics for an infection after a voluntary modification.

Christ, just leave people be.

daisyjgrey · 25/11/2021 20:40

@BleuJay

An abomination to the human race.

@MoveAhoy I mean, this is pretty offensive.
