What are you eating tonight and would you serve it to guests?

Quick meal tonight in our house..........cheap and cheerful!

As I was cooking it I was pondering that it was a family meal and one I wouldn't really serve to "guests". We had cheesy peasy mash with bacon!!! Mash with a bit of cooked onion, cheese and peas added and browned under the grill (the mash and peas were leftovers and the bacon needed finishing off). Cost per serving no more than £1.

Share your "family only" quick meals with me?

We had Irish stew. It was a pinch of nom recipe it was absolutely lovely for us and leftovers will be lunch tomorrow. But I wouldn’t serve it for guests as it doesn’t seem special enough.

Will definitely make again though pinchofnom.com/recipes/slow-cooker-irish-stew/

Cuwins · 17/11/2021 18:15

We had beef chow Mein. Would depend on the guests- my sister yes, my parents probably.

Tuna and sweetcorn pasta salad. Requested by dc :-) Would feed to other kids on a play date but not to my friends!

SandandSplashes · 17/11/2021 18:17

Shepherds pie tonight here. I'd serve it to guests.

HalloHello · 17/11/2021 18:18

I made chicken satay skewers, and a noodle salad with peanut dressing. I hadn't made it before and wouldn't serve it as it was to guests but definitely could tweak in to make it more 'guest worthy'!

Marmite27 · 17/11/2021 18:18

We had Somerset pork casserole, new potatoes and steamed veg (broccoli, baby corn, Mangetout and green beans).

It would be ok for visitors, but it doesn’t look the best!

DentalWorries · 17/11/2021 18:18

Pinch of Nom keema pie here tonight. I’d serve it for guests if they popped in unexpectedly but we have it much too often so I’m a bit sick of the sight of it

BeyondMyWits · 17/11/2021 18:20

We are having baked potato with pulled pork and beans... wouldn't serve it to guests unless they were the "kids" (19&20) friends

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2021 18:20

Leftover chilli with baked potato. Would happily serve it to friends if it wasn't just leftovers.

Dollywilde · 17/11/2021 18:20

On Wednesday we are tight on time - it’s the only day we’re both in London for work and DD is in nursery until 6. So it’s our ready meal night Grin Charlie Bingham lasagne today.

I wouldn’t serve it to guests unless I had some way of passing it off as my own….

PlausibleSuit · 17/11/2021 18:21

I chop up veg — onion or two, peppers, courgette — roast for 15 minutes, then lay a haddock or cod fillet, or chicken breasts or thighs, on the top and smear it with 2tbsp of anything punchily flavoured from a jar. Pesto, shawarma paste, cheese sauce, nduja if I’ve got any, bbq sauce or just smashed up cherry tomatoes and grated cheese. Roast for another 15 (longer for chicken) and serve.

Would I serve to guests? Depends who they were. And not the bbq sauce version, that’s a bit weird tbh!

Crumblinginside · 17/11/2021 18:21

Garlic & herb cod from lidl with frozen roast potatoes

No I probably wouldn't
But maybe would with homemade mash and nice vegetables

TreaslakeandBack · 17/11/2021 18:22

Jacket potato, salmon, vegetables.
Normally do something a bit fancier for guests but it would be ok if anyone were here.

PlausibleSuit · 17/11/2021 18:24

I’m cooking lamb’s hearts tomorrow, I wouldn’t serve that to guests either (unless I was sure they’d like it).

cloudyrain · 17/11/2021 18:26

I haven't even started dinner yet, just trying to finish my work day.
DH is in and I think he is making some sort of Stir Fry so whilst there won't be enough ingredients for guests if we had known it would be suitable.

Scarby9 · 17/11/2021 18:27

Savoury turkey mince and baked potato.
If I were to serve it to guests, I would have thought a bit more about presentation, and would have liked a vegetable other than the ones in the mince, but overall, yes, it was tasty so I would have been happy to offer it to guests.

Keepapromise · 17/11/2021 18:27

I did a gousto meal (tacos) and it was lush so yes I would serve it for guests but on a normal Wednesday it would have been something random from the cupboard/freezer eg pasta or fish fingers so probably not.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/11/2021 18:28

I was going to have a pork stir-fry (which I would serve to guests) but I had stomach ache this afternoon so didn't want to eat anything spicy. So I just had some cheese. I would serve it to guests but not as a whole meal.

FindingMeno · 17/11/2021 18:29

Tortilla things. Didn't follow the recipe.
Yummy but not a guests meal!

RampantIvy · 17/11/2021 18:30

We are having roast pork, which is cooking over a bed of sliced potatoes, onions, garlic and fresh sage. With it we will have carrot and swede mash, romanesco, gravy and apple sauce.

We have a guest staying with us.

GlumyGloomer · 17/11/2021 18:31

Cod with a garlic breadcrumb topping, baked on top of balsamic potatoes and sundried tomatoes, with a bag of steam fresh veg on the side. It's a fusion of two Nadiya Hussain recipes.
Yes, I absolutely would. It's super quick and easy though.

FibonaciSequins · 17/11/2021 18:31

Nigella mirin glazed salmon. Yes I would and have served it to guests before - it's delicious and super easy to cook. Only tonight I'm having it with a baked sweet potato. When I serve it to guests I serve it with rice or rice noodles.

I really like POM recipes, most of them are fairly quick and delicious! Had chicken and brocoli from their books, was delicious. If we had guests would have maybe got some tenderstem brocoli (I know, wild!) and cooked the ricer rather than using microwave rice just as seems to taste a bit better.

thistimelastweek · 17/11/2021 18:31

Prawn curry.

Quick and easy and absolutely fine for guests who like prawns and curry.
