What are you eating tonight and would you serve it to guests?

Quick meal tonight in our house..........cheap and cheerful!

As I was cooking it I was pondering that it was a family meal and one I wouldn't really serve to "guests". We had cheesy peasy mash with bacon!!! Mash with a bit of cooked onion, cheese and peas added and browned under the grill (the mash and peas were leftovers and the bacon needed finishing off). Cost per serving no more than £1.

Share your "family only" quick meals with me?

We had Rick Stein's seafood gratin and yes, I would serve it to guests because it's delicious and like a posh fish pie.

Chicken tikka made using leftover roast chicken and no I wouldn't serve it to anyone because it wasn't very nice.

immersivereader · 17/11/2021 19:19

Dh has bitten the bullet and ordered one of those extortionately over priced meal kit boxes.

Probably guest worthy I suppose.

Halloumi and black bean tacos with potato wedges.

^^

Sounds yum

MrsBerthaRochester · 17/11/2021 19:24

Ds1 on a diet,dd having dinner at her pals so me and ds2 just had cheese on toast. Wouldnt serve to guests as Im still hungry!

1forAll74 · 17/11/2021 19:27

Any of my guests would eat whatever i served to them, be it very simple, or more special. so whatever, they will eat it, as they haven't had to cook anything themselves.

Switch82 · 17/11/2021 19:29

Teriyaki salmon with rice and veg - I think I would!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 17/11/2021 19:31

A chicken and pearl barley soup thing and yeah, I would.

It's rustic!

NigellaSeed · 17/11/2021 19:33

Jacket spuds and cheesy beans with pepper sticks on the side. I would serve this to family guests, I might stretch to giving them Heinz instead of our Tesco own reduced sugar beans though Grin

Giggorata · 17/11/2021 19:35

Roast spuds, parsnips, carrots and trying out the roast broccoli everyone has been talking about on here, with roast duck and partridge breasts, done with soy sauce and honey. We were given these at the weekend from a shooting friend. Yes, I would serve them.
I bought a bag of manky bananas yesterday in the reduced section, so I bunged in a banana cake, which I would offer, too.

itsgettingwierd · 17/11/2021 19:35

I do that but serve with peas for ds and carrots for me!

I love it Grin

We had pizza Blush and yes I'd serve that for guests but I'd do it with salad and chips to help themselves to as well!

TheBestSpoon · 17/11/2021 19:35

Chicken, sausage and vegetable stew from the freezer with baby potatoes and peas. I would (and have) served it to family, but not really special enough for a dinner party.

Minceandonions · 17/11/2021 19:37

Cheese and potato pie with coleslaw. I'd feed it to guests in a 'grab a bite to eat at ours' type of way, but not in a formal 'come for dinner on X date' kind of way.

Babyroobs · 17/11/2021 19:37

Ikea meatballs, Ikea mash and the ? lingberry jam. yes would serve to guests, it was delicious.

GertrudeBElion · 17/11/2021 19:38

We had beef chilli with jackets, nachos, salsa, and corn on the cobs.

It wasn't haute cuisine, but all cooked from scratch fresh, so yeah I would serve it up to guests

Berkeys · 17/11/2021 19:39

We’ll probably have tofu, grilled broccoli, quinoa and chilli bean sauce. In about an hour or so. I’d serve it to guests, sure.

So weird to me that some people have had dinner by 6pm!

NigellaSeed · 17/11/2021 19:40

This thread is making me hungry and I've already had dinner but it was only the aforementioned poxy jacket spud

NotMyCat · 17/11/2021 19:41

No. I made a spice tailor recipe which was lovely BUT it says serves 2-3 as a main
This is half of the portion Blush it's tiny

What are you eating tonight and would you serve it to guests?
Berkeys · 17/11/2021 19:41

I am guessing the up for a 7am Postman people are the dinner before 6pm people.

AtiaoftheJulii · 17/11/2021 19:50

Baked sweet potato with roast veg and IKEA plant balls and a bowlfull of gravy Grin

Could tart up the vegetables but I’m not sure IKEA plant balls are dinner party fare!

Cuwins · 17/11/2021 20:19

I am not an early waker at all. For work it's 7am but at the weekend more like 9am but we have always had dinner fairly early 5:30-6pm sometimes a bit after. Then I have a snack about 8pm normally.
bettertimesarecomingnow · 17/11/2021 20:31

Sweet potato and chorizo soup with toasted sourdough, goats cheese, cured meats and some mini sausage rolls.

Tasty but not really guest food! Maybe as a starter or part of a buffet

Hoolihan · 17/11/2021 20:34

Fish cakes, spinach & new potatoes in garlic butter. Wouldn't serve to guests, was dead boring.

ColourMeExhausted · 17/11/2021 20:34

We eat at 6pm as it's a family dinner. Always prefer to eat together, and if we waited till they were in bed, it would be gone 8 and that is way too late for me these days!

We had pasta and tomato sauce. Yeah I'd serve it to guests, albeit with salad and garlic bread. The sauce is an Italian recipe that's in the family so it's very tasty.

Must admit some of these recipes seem very fancy and not terribly more-ish Grin if I turned up at your house and you served me an oven pizza, I'd be delighted! i have basic tastes

Love the sound of your meal OP! Hold the bacon (I'm a vegetarian) and I'm there!

Hoolihan · 17/11/2021 20:36

Dinner at half eight?! Where do you think you are, bloody Barcelona?? 😂
