What are you eating tonight and would you serve it to guests?

Quick meal tonight in our house..........cheap and cheerful!

As I was cooking it I was pondering that it was a family meal and one I wouldn't really serve to "guests". We had cheesy peasy mash with bacon!!! Mash with a bit of cooked onion, cheese and peas added and browned under the grill (the mash and peas were leftovers and the bacon needed finishing off). Cost per serving no more than £1.

Share your "family only" quick meals with me?

IKEA plant balls? Like veggie meatballs?

Yes!

They do, or used to do, a vegetable version which were ok but not great, but these ones are really similar to the Swedish meatballs.

Cauliflower cheese and baked potatoes.

Not that exactly, but I’ve served a macaroni/cauliflower cheese combo to unexpected guests - it went down very well. I wouldn’t normally serve it to guests, though, unless they were staying at least a few nights, in which case family type meals are fine, IMO.

Defrosted some chicken, chorizo and paprika stew with mash. It's something we make a vat of and then freeze for quick weekday dinners so I don't think of it as pushing the boat out but actually it's bloody delicious and I'd absolutely serve it to guests.

Also made some raspberry and halva crumble bars, which were so good that I actually felt sad that we didn't have any guests to share them with (I got over this by having seconds) www.theguardian.com/food/2021/jul/31/yotam-ottolenghi-recipes-summer-berries-custard-tart-crumble-bars-ginger-shrub

We had bbc good food burnt aubergine chilli with rice, sour cream, cheese salsa and guacamole for the first time.

It was absolutely delicious and I would certainly serve it to guests .
I'm looking forward to the leftovers on a jacket potato later Smile

Youngest has gastritis so we had plain roast chicken (he had no skin), plain boiled rice and peas. I might have added soy sauce and chilli sauce to mine. But not something I would serve guests…

I wasn't able to get back to the thread last night so I'm just catching up, what a variety of meals!!! I should clarify that when I said I wouldn't serve my meal to guests I meant I wouldn't invite someone over for a planned meal and serve it...........I would be happy to serve it to hungry friends or family if they were here.

We had Chinese takeaway. Normal restaurant was closed, so we had a different one, and I'm glad we weren't sharing it as it was crappy*. Our usual takeaway we are happy to serve to others

*this did not stop me eating all of it plus the prawn crackers.

I have just had poached eggs on toast - no I wouldn’t serve to a guess for tea as it’s more of a lunch, but it’s the first tea I have had in 12 days!!

All kids had tomato pasta hours ago. Dp had burgers.

Houseofvelour · 19/11/2021 20:57

Pesto pasta.
Tomato pesto with a bit of mayo stirred in to make it creamy (trust me, it's amazing) with a size of veg. Tonight was sweetcorn and tenderstem broccoli.

AlligatorDentist · 19/11/2021 21:21

I had the M&S truffle mac & cheese and it was amazing.

Not sure a guest would be worthy of it.

TuftyMarmoset · 19/11/2021 21:28

Couldn't really be bothered tonight so just had some Aldi spring rolls. I would serve them to guests since they're part of the party food range but I wouldn't only serve that to them!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/11/2021 21:36

Definitely wouldn’t serve tonight’s dinner to guests!

We went for a long walk and got home fairly late without having made plans for dinner, so I opted for digging out a box of frozen battered fish (‘the authentic taste of fish and chips’ it claimed... Hmm ), made a quick mash and some minted peas.

All our food is made from scratch these days so processed/ready made food doesn’t compare, really.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/11/2021 21:45

Homemade burgers (defrosted) in homemade baps (courtesy of the ILs) topped with a selection of cheese and sauces.

No would not serve to guests. Reluctant to share with DH. Want it all for me

afaloren · 19/11/2021 22:07

Cold leftover Chinese so no Grin Tomorrow I plan to make scallops, asparagus and tender stem broccoli with a lemon butter sauce. I would serve that to guests.
