What are you eating tonight and would you serve it to guests?

Quick meal tonight in our house..........cheap and cheerful!

As I was cooking it I was pondering that it was a family meal and one I wouldn't really serve to "guests". We had cheesy peasy mash with bacon!!! Mash with a bit of cooked onion, cheese and peas added and browned under the grill (the mash and peas were leftovers and the bacon needed finishing off). Cost per serving no more than £1.

Share your "family only" quick meals with me?

Ashamed to tell you and no I wouldn't serve it to guests!

Dollywilde · 17/11/2021 20:42

I voted up at 7 for the postman and we eat at 8pm!

Baby gets me up at 6 each day, not back from work until 7. Straight into baby bedtime til 7.30. Sit down at 8. Up to bed at 10, lights out 10.30!

I had a bowl of granola. Nice but not guest worthy Grin

We had roast chicken , pigs in blankets , roasted carrots and parsnips and mash , it was very nice and I’d serve it to the guests that I have for dinner .

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 20:43

We had tofu, red and yellow pepper, chick pea and onion rogan josh (jar) with samosas, yoghurt and lime pickle. It was a decent can’t really be bothered to cook meal. My sister would enjoy it but I wouldn’t really serve it to friends.

NadiaVulvokov · 17/11/2021 20:46

Had aloo paneer masala with fresh mint and yoghurt. Yes, I’d serve it to guests, it was really good.

midsomermurderess · 17/11/2021 20:47

Heinz tomato soup and cheese on toast. Not really enough to share.

garlictwist · 17/11/2021 20:48

I've just eaten some tinned rice pudding and a slice of bread as I really can't be arsed. So no, I would not serve it to guests Smile

Tabbypawpaw · 17/11/2021 21:04

A Jamie Oliver cod recipe with a pesto crumb, green beans and garlic wedges. So yes!

villainousbroodmare · 17/11/2021 21:11

Three big chunks of cheddar cheese and a yogurt.
Nope. Grin

@Butteredtoast55

Was it buttered toast?
justaweeone · 17/11/2021 21:59

I also had some bacon leftover
Did a bacon and leek pasta
It was basic but if I elevated it I would serve it to certain guests Wink

Jumpingintochristmas · 17/11/2021 22:35

We had chicken, leek and potato soup with crusty bread. It was nice but not guest worthy.

olivesnutsandcheeseplease · 17/11/2021 22:54

Lightly smoked salmon fillets (baked in foil)
Brown rice, broccoli spears and mushrooms fried with a bit of garlic and some vegan cream.

Don't think I'd serve to guests, was trying out the soya cream as DH is now dairy free. It was ok. Nothing special

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 18/11/2021 00:08

Smoked haddock poached in a cheese sauce, this was served with oven chips with some spinach cooked with excess cheese sauce sauce.

Yes would serve it to guests as people know that they have to take me as they find me.

BestZebbie · 18/11/2021 00:19

A variety of tinned veg and some baked sosmix, with gravy. I'd happily serve it to my parents (who fed me the same for years) but probably not to the Queen if she popped round....

RoseMartha · 18/11/2021 00:34

Meatballs and pasta, with broccoli that had seen better days but still edible. Would I serve it to guests?
Yes but would replace the particular broccoli we had with salad.

Rainbows89 · 18/11/2021 00:47

We had jacket potatoes with butter, veggie burgers, peas and gravy.

It was delicious! I would probably do something a little fancier for guests though.

NiellyNoFive · 18/11/2021 00:49

We had chicken casserole which I would happily have served to guests. It was delicious actually. I randomly added an apple and milk

I love a MN food thread, it's like a window into another world for me. I genuinely don't mean that in a snarky sort of a way - it just reflects the essence of Mumsnet, all of us here with different backgrounds and experiences, all reflected in our Wednesday night meals Grin

Wednesday is one of our busiest nights. I'm generally working a back shift, and DH gets back early at around 5.30ish to take the DC's to their clubs. For that reason, we do an easy tea - tonight was chilli and cheese wraps (chilli from freezer), wedges, salad and coleslaw. Takes around 15 minutes prep.
It's not really something I'd serve up to guests - but would be fine for my sister, or my close friends if we were just having a quick bite to eat.

AdaColeman · 18/11/2021 01:52

I had a Buddha bowl of pasta, green lentils, broccoli and beans with herbs.

As I was eating it I was thinking it would be a good snack for vegetarian DS. But apart from that, it’s not the sort of meal I would serve to guests.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/11/2021 01:56

I had half a loaf of cranberry and cashew bread from tescos with lurpak and a lump of brie alongside. Followed afterwards (for balance) by half a pack of cherry tomatoes, eaten on the sofa straight from a packet.

It wouldn't be my first choice for a dinner party!

crispinglovershighkick · 18/11/2021 02:56

I had cauliflower purée with a poached egg on top and it was bloody lovely but as I was eating it I thought 'this is an example of food that is delicious but not suitable for guests.' Maybe it's the chicken stock in it, it looks like brown gruel but tastes like a cross between mashed potatoes and cauliflower cheese.

immersivereader · 18/11/2021 03:02

Dinner at half eight?! Where do you think you are, bloody Barcelona?? 😂

We're having black bean fritters with a tomato salad.

Wouldn't do it for guests because it's a pain doing large numbers of fritters. I'd have to do them in batches and keep them warm. It's a quick, fresh family meal, not one for guests.
