Thank God he has been given a whole life sentence.

There now needs to be a serious investigation into the Met Police's response to the allegations made of his indecent exposure in the days before Sarah's murder.

Northernlurker · 30/09/2021 12:33

I let out a cheer.

Agree, now let's talk about institutional misogyny and how women can be safe.

ohfourfoxache · 30/09/2021 12:33

Does anyone have any ideas about what we can actually do?

Obviously it’s “good” news that this utter bastard is locked away (may his life be tortuous) but violence against women and children continues

What can we actively “do”?

there's also the fact that an officer guarding search areas, sent awful memes via WhatsApp about her disappearance ... disgraceful

I know that this is a side issue, but the conversation back there had descended into the handmaidens telling the rest of us that women commit crime too, as if it is ever on the same scale as male violence against women. There have only ever been 3 women sentenced in UK history to a full life tariff, I’m not going to mention their names, as the woke brigade are all over that, and busying themselves trying to equate the crimes of THREE women, EVER, with the fact that on average 3 women a week are killed by MEN, and only men, in the UK. Please just stop. Siding with the menz and their hurt feelings won’t make you or your daughters any safer, it just allows your sons to grow up in a environment that incubates and exonerates violence against women. Open your eyes. Stop contributing to the epidemic.

I would also like to know how we can make other men understand the enormity of this? I have spoken about it with my husband and whilst he thinks its absolutely disgusting and it has shaken him as we have a daughter, he can't quite fathom why I am SO upset about it

Cressida Dick needs to have the good grace to resign

monarchoftheglen · 30/09/2021 12:39

This was also in an article from March:

"Dozens of officers and staff are being investigated for looking up details of the Sarah Everard case on the police computer system, the Met has said.....
Doing so "without a purpose" could be a criminal offence, the force said"

I think we need to ensure that so-called minor crimes like exposing the penis should be reframed. They are not minor crimes, they are often the start of an escalation into sexual assault and then murder. Get away with taking your penis out and the male just becomes invincible; 'I got away with that, so what's next?' No-one starts off raping and murdering;it's the culmination of lots of other undetected/ignored crimes.

Yes, going on about women's crimes when we are discussing Sarah Everard's murder is an insult to her and her family.

And it is actively being complicit in the society that allowed this terrible murder to happen, the society that minimised and dismissed her murder's previous crimes against women, so that her murderer was emboldened and encouraged to escalate.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 30/09/2021 12:43

@LoislovesStewie

Agree - indecent exposure is a crime, let's start seeing some prosecutions for that. Maybe then we can stop the next few potential Wayne Couzen's in their tracks before they get to murder.

LizBennet · 30/09/2021 12:44

What can we do?

We make a noise. We make a noise every time we hear something misogynistic said. Every time somebody tells us their partner is abusive. Every time we see it in the streets. We make a noise and we support each other. We look after each other and we consider each other's vulnerability. I can't tell you how many times I've spoke to staff I manage who have disclosed abusive behaviour but I can tell you what I said - how can I help, what do you need from me, what time and space can I provide for you and here is my number - anytime.
We can talk about the victims with respect and without trying to justify Male violence.
We can have zero tolerance of Male violence. It's never, ever ok. If it's your husband, your son, your father it doesn't matter it is never ok. We can resist and we can make a noise.

LizBennet · 30/09/2021 12:48

Do we still not have a “block username” on this site 😒

goldengrove · 30/09/2021 12:49

Mulhollandmagoo I wonder if there is something about many (most?) male brains that is simply lacking in the empathy department... At best, unimaginative or unsympathetic; at worst ..... the monster WC.

WC= Water Closet (ie toilet). Insult to toilets.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/09/2021 12:49

@ThatCampWitch I totally agree. A few years ago there was a female serial killer near to where I work, and she has been cited a few times as "proof" that women can kill. No one says they can't BUT it is so rare in comparison with men.

The issue here is that we have a culture in which men commit sexual offences against women on a routine basis. It starts with everyday sexism which demeans women and continues into so-called low level sexual harassment, then escalates into sexual assault then into rape and murder. We as a society need to ensure that we call out behaviour at the early stage.

Men need to step up for a start and start challenging each other

If we managed to make smoking and racist socially unacceptable then we can do it for misogyny but they need to be on board

For a start I’d classify rape porn as illegal
Misogyny should be treated like a hate crime

littleloopylou · 30/09/2021 12:49

Yes, I'm outraged. I am absolutely sick and tired of male entitlement and violence.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/09/2021 12:51

I am glad they are throwing away the key for him - it is the right sentence.

However, I think violence against women and "minor" sexual misdemeanours need to be taken far far more seriously. My concern is that he is seen as a single bad apple rather than the extreme end of a continuum that minimises aggressive behaviour towards women.

There also needs to be an enquiry into sexism in the police - I do think the police are institutionally sexist and I have less trust in them today than I did a year or two ago.

FourTeaFallOut · 30/09/2021 12:51

Yeah. I agree. It's minimised and regarded as comedy, as though it were the small equivalent of streaking across a football pitch, instead of being understood for the misogynistic power play that it is when women are working out which direction they need to run and scream if they take two steps towards them.

Gimlisaxe · 30/09/2021 12:52

@Mulhollandmagoo

I have had this conversation as well and while he sort of gets it, he doesn't completely a good example is, one night when I was walking the dog, a group of lads passed me, one of them starting singing (possibly to the theme tune) Grand theft auto, just repeated over and over again.

I was really pissed off when I got home, that it had shaken me and I couldn't seem to make him understand why that had shaken me

Claudethecat · 30/09/2021 12:52

Thanks for the new thread OP. I agree that we should not use his name as another poster suggested.
