Who do you think will be the next Bond?

I think a Jamie Dornan is a good shout, but it may be a relative unknown.

Ten years ago my money would have been on Idris Elba, but I think his optimum age has passed.

Zachary Quinto

I genuinely can’t see Dev Patel, who has a sweet, goofy energy about him, as Bond! It would be like having Ben ‘Voice of Paddington’ Whishaw switch over from playing Q.

5thnonblonde · 29/09/2021 10:20

@Spindrifting agreed- Paddington has too much coiled sexual energy... the association would be too distracting.

Oh, is that what the Hard Stare is really about? Grin

@Backstreetsbackalrightdadada

Henry Golding swoon! Maybe an Aussie… unlikely but the other Hemsworth (Liam?) is sort of standard issue hot bloke. I can’t believe another Bond will be a white dude but I bet they stick to it, getting bland. Never mind it’s fiction anyway - they either have a dry series from here on in or make it more interesting
Will changing the ethnicity of Bond spice the actual movie up though or just create hype? I'm not a massive Bond fan anyway but I find the idea the movies will be more watchable if only the actor isn't white odd. All up for hiring the best person regardless of ethnicity before anyone accuses me of racism, but "oh it'll be better because he's not white" feels quite tokenistic

@TitilatedOcelot

I would watch a regency era Bond origins with Rege Jean striding around in riding boots and breeches - that would be a change for the franchise!

A Paddington Bear and James Bond crossover work 🤔 The mission could be to take out James Cordon. Crossover franchises are all the rage.Grin

Surely they’ll never cast a non-Brit?

I'd watch that. Could Hugh Grant reprise his Phoenix Buchanan, who's randomly joined Spectre and has tapdancing lessons with Blofeld?
shortpeopleproblems · 29/09/2021 12:51

Dan Stevens... If you think he's too 'nice' and only remembering Downton Abbey, he has serious action chops in The Guest. Phenomenal actor.

Much as I'd like that, though, I don't think he'd want a role as mainstream as Bond.

@EvilRingahBitch

Do you mean Paterson Joseph? He's an extremely well preserved 57, so yes.
No way is Johnson 57!!

Rami whatshisname, who played Freddie Mercury.

You’re right, I stand corrected. Still, I’m not sure they’d go for an American actor?

Rami Malek is the villain in the current movie so I would assume this would put him out of the running to play 007

peaceanddove · 29/09/2021 15:33

If we are talking a potential American then I think Chris Pine would be excellent. He studied at Leeds University so he could have quasi British status Smile

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 29/09/2021 15:45

@SmellyOldOwls

Richard Madden is too short. What about Poldark?
According to the internet Madden is 1.77m and Daniel Craig is 1.78m (5'8") so lack of height no barrier. Aidan Turner on the other hand is 1.83m (just under 6'1") so tell your husband that @peaceanddove Grin

DH is claiming the next Bond is Lashana Lynch and it's made clear in No Time to Die. He hasn't seen the film though might I add.

Personally, I would love to see Chiwetel Ejiofor play Bond. He'd be great.

However, I'm not convinced we'll have a black Bond. We forget this is a global franchise. China is the world's largest film market and one of the most important audiences in terms of bringing in the cash for Bond - see below from Variety mag:

"China is one of the most important overseas markets for the Bond franchise, and was the highest grossing overseas territory for its last instalment, “Spectre,” other than the U.K. That film, also starring Craig, made $881 million worldwide, $84 million of which came from China."

And, we already know from experience that China has a history of taking out images of non-white actors in film advertisements, and even bloody Jo Malone swapped out John Boyega in its Chinese ads.

So, with regards whether we'll have a black Bond, the question should be: is Eon Productions ready to rock the boat and potentially risk upsetting the Chinese market?

I say no.

But I really hope I am wrong.

Bambooshoot · 29/09/2021 16:09

Rege-Jean Page, oh my goodness yes please! Great actor, hot as anything, would suit the role, young enough for several more goes, and can project the arrogance plus vulnerability that is being built into the Bond role these days (not a factor in the early days but good to see).

And by the way, if they’re all done with Daniel Craig, just send the leftovers my way . . .

Bambooshoot · 29/09/2021 16:16

Interning about the Chinese market, I didn’t know it was such an influence. They’ve recently cracked down on over-feminine looking male icons in music, (a rejection of the KPop scene) so I wonder if that would affect the selection?

KeflavikAirport · 29/09/2021 17:54

@TheWoollybacksWife it would make a great twist wouldn't it Grin

@Effic

Daniel Kaluuya - proper actor and can pull off the whole Bond thing of posh but anti establishment thing
Great actor, but at 5’ 8” it’s never going to happen.
