Hi @Gilead - no it’s one of the ones in Lanchester. We loved it and are sad about it closing.

Florelei · 17/03/2022 19:30

@Beeinalily - I second South Shields. Try an ice cream at minchella’s!

Gilead · 17/03/2022 20:24

Oh. I didn’t know that was closing, it really is just up the road too!

Someaddedsugar · 17/03/2022 21:20

We've had to say goodbye to our ddog so have been a bit quiet on here. We were very lucky to have him for the time we did and I'm determined to think of the good times 🙂.

Welcome @Beeinalily! My dparents went to Saltburn a few weeks ago and said it's lovely and has some brilliant independent shops and cafes - might be worth a look? I also love South Shields.

@myrtleWilson pleased to hear your daughter's doing well.

@AlviarinAesSedai I've also started watching the news less. Too much bad news at the moment and there's always something, eg the P&O announcement today which is just awful for the people who worked there.

Well done on the weight loss @Florelei. I need to do something about mine and as the sunshine is meant to continue I'm going to start going for a long walk on my lunch break again.

Saltburn is lovely but you need your best walking feet on! Seaham is smaller and easy to get to, now the 65 runs twice an hour from Durham. If you live on an arriva bus route, you'll need explorer tickets but if you live on the X21 route, you can use go north east day tickers. Family versions of both are available.

The building work near arnison is annoying me, at the moment, as the footpath is closed which means a wander through Newton Hall if I don't want to keep zigzagging across that road as there isn't a path on the other side, all the way along.

Well done @florelei!

myrtleWilson · 17/03/2022 21:33

So sorry to hear about your dog @Someaddedsugar - remembering the good times will give you pockets of joy whilst you adjust to his physical absence in your home - sending love.

@Beeinalily I started working in South Shields about 3 months before we went into lockdown - despite living in the NE for about 20 years I don't think I'd ever been to the beach there but it is lovely - and the park opposite is great too.

Beeinalily · 17/03/2022 22:48

@Someaddedsugar I'm so sorry about Ddog. 💐

Someaddedsugar · 18/03/2022 06:38

Thanks @myrtleWilson and @Beeinalily.

If anyone is wanting to attend the ticketed events at the brass festival, the events go on sale at 10am today. I'm hoping it goes smoother than the Lumiere did!

I can see the building work from the NW office and it seems to have moved very quickly. I hope they open the path again soon @PickAChew! Or at least put in a temporary pedestrian solution.

@Someaddedsugar - I am so sorry to hear about your ddog. I’m sure he or she had a fabulous life with you. Flowers

AlviarinAesSedai · 18/03/2022 09:18

@Someaddedsugar , I’m so sorry about your ddog. Flowers
They never think about pedestrians, during road works , building works etc. I didn’t realise they have closed paths etc.
If you buy an explorer ticket I’m sure you can go on metro and shield’s ferry. My children enjoyed shields ferry and metro. Does South Shields park still have the train?

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat · 18/03/2022 16:21

Hi all. When we lived near Bishop we often went to Saltburn, it's a lovely place, with a cliff railway, pier, pub right on the beach, and a nice park, thought I don't know if the miniature railway in the park is still going.

We mostly drove, but did once go on the train from Bishop. There are no changes, and the route is along the old Stockton and Darlington line. If things are still the same, the last train back leaves sometime around 5pm.

I've been meaning to go to South Sheilds for ages. DD and her DP had an amazing meal in a fish restaurant a couple of years ago. You lot have just given me the boot up the bum I needed Blush

PickAChew · 18/03/2022 17:46

Sorry, I missed the sad news about your dog, @Someaddedsugar

And yes, explorers can be used on the metro and shields ferry - the bits of them that are running at any given point in time, anyhow!

Someaddedsugar · 23/03/2022 20:36

Thanks for your lovely messages ☺️. DS has been asking if we can get a puppy today - I don't think he's going to get that one past DP anytime soon!

The weather has been amazing today - definitely brings out the best in people. Everyone I've seen today has been very smiley and happy.

We went to broom house farm at the weekend and they were really busy which was lovely to see. We also went to the pond at Witton Dene (just down from the church in Witton Gilbert) and it was full of frogs and frogspawn - if anyone has young children (or likes frogs) it's worth a visit if you're passing.

Broom house farm has newborn piglets. Another week or so before in pig shed. Should also be lambing soon.
I love seeing the lambs in the fields.
The weather has been gorgeous.

AlviarinAesSedai · 28/03/2022 15:54

Crook Hall has officially purchased by National Trust. Good news. Might rejoin.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 29/03/2022 09:40

@SakuraB

I hope that has worked. Someone posting about making friends in the NE so thought this thread would be useful to them.

I saw the news about Crook Hall yesterday, it is really great. I was worried as it had gone very quiet after the initial announcement. Great that it will be kept up and open to the public. Think the NT have got a bargain. Well maintained house and gardens and city location so lots of tea and cake/stroll in the garden regular visitors and most tourists will probably pop in too.

PickAChew · 29/03/2022 10:17

That's great news about Crook Hall. The prospect of it sitting and rotting was a worrying one.

AlviarinAesSedai · 31/03/2022 11:32

Snow this morning. Winter is back. ❄️

PickAChew · 31/03/2022 11:37

Yep. DH is flying back from a work trip, this afternoon. And I'm supposed to have a waitrose delivery. I'm not hopeful. For the delivery, that is.

Silly weather!

AlviarinAesSedai · 31/03/2022 20:17

Snow nearly gone, but did start snowing again this afternoon. Weird day, when the sun was out, it was warm and sunny.

Someaddedsugar · 01/04/2022 18:31

That's great news about Crook Hall. I'm a NT member so it's nice to have something on the doorstep!

Pleased the snow has started to go. I hope that's it for the year as this week hasn't been nice in terms of the weather!

PickAChew · 04/04/2022 12:10

Well the pedestrian detour where they're building the new stores has had a big hole dug in the middle of it, so you now have to properly go round the houses 🤬

North East thread 5: The one where we move to Chat!
AlviarinAesSedai · 04/04/2022 20:36

That’s shocking PickAChew.

PickAChew · 04/04/2022 20:48

It's certainly not safe for people having to cross from the original closed pavement as there is only the road or muddy grass to walk on and the poor elderly couple who I met doing the big detour the other way looked pretty fed up.
