At least there’s a place that will happily take her now

If you look at his other tweets, he has called the fleeing president of Afghanistan a criminal on the run. He certainly doesn't seem to be shy of expressing his support for the Taliban.

His other tweets asks why the hell the UK was in Afghanistan in the first place and also that withdrawal from Afghanistan was a Trump plan.

So you could interpret that to mean what everyone on Mumsnet has been saying all along - that no foreign powers can rule Afghanistan, it's too tribal and fragmented.

The return of the Taliban is almost inevitable, so many papers have said this. And yet just because a brown man has tweeted it, he must be supportive of the Taliban?

MaMelon · 16/08/2021 12:10

He also defended Lee Rugby’s killer.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck etc - irrespective of its colour.

Bizjustgotreal · 16/08/2021 12:10

@Ozanj

*According to her Wikipedia page, she allegedly was an enforcer in the ISIL camps and sewed suicide vests so that they could not be removed without detonation...*

Take that with a pinch of salt. Foreign born jihadis, especially women, were often blamed and ‘othered’ and accused of things it would be impossible for them to do by the Turkish forces that captured them to try and push the blame away from Syrians (with whom many share a cultural bond with).

The fact is that most foreign born ‘jidhadi wives’ became little more than glorified prostitutes; only the ones married to local warlords had any influence and even there they were sidelined because they didn’t know how to cook Syrian food or keep house as well (or provided as much dowry) as the local born wives.

Begum was a child who was groomed and who was then used to groom other children. She can’t be blamed entirely for the things she did - in the same way our society didn’t blame the young white abuse victims who arranged girls for the rochdale rapists.

Source? I've not read or heard about this practice and don't want to dismiss the claim out of turn.

However the Rochdale and Rotherham victims didn't walk around with Kalashnikovs enforcing Sharia law.

Meh! It's more the flippant, unprofessional use of SM that surprises and alarms.

He has clients, he has professional standing, as does his employer. He advises the government on terrorism. Yet here he is, Tweeting like a twat!

The women I work who that escaped the Taliban 20 years ago don't find him amusing, don't see his point. They are appalled that he seeks to find humour in it, that he cannot simply speak out against it. His other related tweets are fucking awful too!

Meraas · 16/08/2021 12:12

What on earth does Rochdate/Rotherham have to do with Shamima Begum?

If Steve Bell had put a caption 'the boys are back in town' over a drawing of that picture in the tweet, no one would bat an eyelid.

Twitter isn't an extension of your work, you can make jokes on it - gasp - even sarcastic ones.

What's the point of defending Charlie Hebdo and yet get offended when a Muslim makes a joke?

OhWhyNot · 16/08/2021 12:16

Because they are all brown Meraas

Yet Twitter ban Tommy Robinson but allow this? Double standards.

Many employers take an exceptionally dim view of this sort of "joke". People have been sacked for less.

Anordinarymum · 16/08/2021 12:20

It's all in bad taste and he can do it where a white man could not

LizBennet · 16/08/2021 12:22

“Boys are back in town” is way too jovial for a joke. Half expecting a “it’s gonna be messy 😜” tacked on the end.

DesperateForSun · 16/08/2021 12:22

@Meraas I’m not automatically offended by Muslims making jokes. I come from a Muslim country and family myself. I don’t happen to think there’s anything funny about this when, and I repeat, 12 year old girls are being taken as sex slaves. Can you point me to the humour in this situation which is so obvious to you and so hidden to me?

OP posts:
IheartJKR · 16/08/2021 12:23

I’m extremely saddened and horrified to read the child victims of child sexual exploitation and people trafficking in the UK being used as a comparison.

Not surprised though unfortunately.

Westchesterarms · 16/08/2021 12:24

I'm not a supporter of Begum nor of her legal representatives. But I took this as a sarcastic remark, not being funny sarcasm but as a dig at the govt that this is what Behum would have to live under if she wasn't allowed into the UK. I didn't take it as support of the Taliban. However I don't know what his other comments in general are like.

Meraas · 16/08/2021 12:25

If you’re a solicitor, it absolutely is. The Law Society issued updated guidance to this effect only a few days ago.

I can't see anything online - can you link it?
rbsyui · 16/08/2021 12:26
**@Meraas* @rbsyui*

If you look at his Twitter thread, he’s linked to the song below this tweet.

That any decent person could find the situation amusing is impossible. People are dying. Women and girls are being taken as sex slaves, a sarcastic / “humorous” comment is beyond callous.

I think it’s much more likely it’s what it looks like - he supports them and thinks this is a positive move.
I don't know, I don't know him, but you look at the other tweets they are not along the lines of "weyhey this is a good thing"

Meraas · 16/08/2021 12:28

But he hasn't made a joke about 12yo girls Hmm

It's a joke about a song that talks about boys partying/drinking/hanging out with girls, put against a picture of the Taliban who hate all that stuff.

Do you seriously not get this?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/08/2021 12:28

If Steve Bell had put a caption 'the boys are back in town' over a drawing of that picture in the tweet, no one would bat an eyelid. I suspect ypu are both right and wrong with that, depending on who you talk to.

Twitter isn't an extension of your work, you can make jokes on it - gasp - even sarcastic ones. Oddly it is an extension of your work... in every profession I can think of!

What's the point of defending Charlie Hebdo and yet get offended when a Muslim makes a joke? Lawyer vs satirical magazine

Mmm! Nope! Can't see any difference there!

Oh, and it's not the fact he is Muslim, Anyone male, female, black, white, able bodied or disabled, in that job should be held to account for their unprofessional use of SM.

Jihadi brides are also victims of sexual exploitation. I both cases under age girls are groomed and then allocated to men and coerced into obedience. Its not valid in either case to blame the victims of grooming.

Don't be so ridiculous, trying to make this into a 'it's just because he's brown' issue.
Nightlystroll · 16/08/2021 12:29

@lllllllllll

Why is everyone assuming the tweet isn't sarcastic?

Even if it is, it's staggeringly poor taste.

But there's a massive difference between poor taste and supporting the Taliban!

I can't see anything online - can you link it? Google The Law Society and social media guidance update 2021 and you'll get a few hits. Not the actual documents as you have to pay for those, be a member!
