At least there’s a place that will happily take her now

Shamima Begum’s solicitor just tweeted this

It is on his Twitter feed - I checked because it seemed so unbelievable

Another man out to screw over an abused teenager - is anyone on her side?

Ozanj · 16/08/2021 11:39

He was commenting on Biden’s speech in July where he said a Taliban takeover was impossible as the US / western forces ‘trained’ 30k Afghani soldiers.

TheGenealogist · 16/08/2021 11:40

@Kanaloa

What an odd thing for a presumably well educated and reasonable intelligent man to do. Why would he think this is a funny joke?

I don’t think it really reflects on Shamima Begum though - it’s not her who tweeted it.

Well it does reflect on her. Because the person leading the campaign to prove that she is a reformed character and not a danger to society any more is tweeting material which supports a fundamentalist Islamic ideology, just like the society Begum fled to support.

Lots of people are tagging the Law Society in their replies, which are almost 100% critical.

What an arse this man is.

Fleek · 16/08/2021 11:41

What a mess. I hope this is taken seriously.

Fleek · 16/08/2021 11:42

I see he's followed by BBC's Woman's Hour on Twitter.

OhWhyNot · 16/08/2021 11:46

Isn’t the message our government are happy to turn our back on a young women but they will welcome here

Isn’t that the truth ?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2021 11:47

Bloody hell, that's appalling.

According to her Wikipedia page, she allegedly was an enforcer in the ISIL camps and sewed suicide vests so that they could not be removed without detonation...Hmm
Shelleyopolis · 16/08/2021 11:50

Taliban supporter ....you'll start hearing the 'Yes, but...'s soon enough from their apologists/supporters/admirers...from all quarters.

Of course it reflects on her. He is leading her bid to prove she no longer supports Taliban, decries their totalitarian regime. And here he is... amusing, no?
Meraas · 16/08/2021 11:56

Why is everyone assuming the tweet isn't sarcastic?

gardeninggirl68 · 16/08/2021 11:56

What a prick!

lllllllllll · 16/08/2021 11:58

Why is everyone assuming the tweet isn't sarcastic?

Even if it is, it's staggeringly poor taste.

Why would you assume it is sarcastic??

If you look at his other tweets, he has called the fleeing president of Afghanistan a criminal on the run. He certainly doesn't seem to be shy of expressing his support for the Taliban.

rbsyui · 16/08/2021 11:58

If you read the twitter thread it is not pro Taliban at all, it is a sardonic refence to the fact that this was inevitable because of the US and UK involvement and how they left Afghanistan with fractured borders, and it is highlighting the dangers to the Afghan people especially women saying that other powers should step in to protect them.

Boys back in town here is the equivalent of saying "the big man is back in power" about Trump (last time). It is obvious to everyone that it is not a good thing and so wouldn't be taken literally. Or shouldn't be taken literally.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/08/2021 11:58

Blimey.

itsgrand · 16/08/2021 11:58

I've reported him

OhWhyNot · 16/08/2021 12:00

The president or ex president of Afghanistan has allowed those all around him to line their pockets

It suited the west to have him in power but he supported corruption so yes he is a criminal

grapewine · 16/08/2021 12:00

Yeah, it is just awful.

If you only take the first verse, maybe!

Guess who just got back today?
Them wild-eyed boys that'd been away
Haven't changed, had much to say
But man, I still think them cats are crazy
They were askin' if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
Told 'em you were livin' downtown
Drivin' all the old men crazy

Ozanj · 16/08/2021 12:02

Take that with a pinch of salt. Foreign born jihadis, especially women, were often blamed and ‘othered’ and accused of things it would be impossible for them to do by the Turkish forces that captured them to try and push the blame away from Syrians (with whom many share a cultural bond with).

The fact is that most foreign born ‘jidhadi wives’ became little more than glorified prostitutes; only the ones married to local warlords had any influence and even there they were sidelined because they didn’t know how to cook Syrian food or keep house as well (or provided as much dowry) as the local born wives.

Begum was a child who was groomed and who was then used to groom other children. She can’t be blamed entirely for the things she did - in the same way our society didn’t blame the young white abuse victims who arranged girls for the rochdale rapists.

DesperateForSun · 16/08/2021 12:03

@Meraas @rbsyui

If you look at his Twitter thread, he’s linked to the song below this tweet.

That any decent person could find the situation amusing is impossible. People are dying. Women and girls are being taken as sex slaves, a sarcastic / “humorous” comment is beyond callous.

I think it’s much more likely it’s what it looks like - he supports them and thinks this is a positive move.

pollypokcet · 16/08/2021 12:04

@Meraas

Why is everyone assuming the tweet isn't sarcastic?

He's already the lawyer for a terrorist/bride of one, hardly beyond him to support or sympathise with the Taliban

If he cared about Afghanistan he could've used his platform on Twitter to denounce them or something. Instead he makes a crude, offensive and not remotely funny joke.

Not sure I'd be giving this one the benefit of the doubt tbh
