Why do teens choose to boil alive?🥵

My teen is in her room,

Black out blind down, window closed, normal blind down. She’s under the covers in a hoodie.

‘It’s not that hot in here’😬

I couldn’t stay in it…

innocent reason: just because
blinds down will make a room cooler and if they prefer to be that way let them be

not so innocent reason: body image issues, eating disorders, self harming.
being too cold in cold weather and being too hot in hot weather are both techniques anorexic people might use to keep burning calories.
showing skin is not gonna happen if they want to hide body parts they hate or have scars.

hopefully it's the former

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/07/2021 12:32

It’s a thermal black out blind. Its not making it cooler!

Hallyup6 · 19/07/2021 12:47

My 13 year old goes to school in a thermal long sleeved vest under a long sleeved shirt, blazer on top and thermal tights. She then gets in my boiling hot car and claims she's cold.

I'd have died of heatstroke long ago.

DonLewis · 19/07/2021 12:49

Then they don't wear coats in the winter! They're just contrary twats.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/07/2021 12:50

In winter the teens near me walk home in a blazer and shirt. In the summer they wear hoodies.

It makes no sense.

ssd · 19/07/2021 12:51

Ds is gaming in his room, windows shut and fleece dressing gown onShock

Champagneforeveryone · 19/07/2021 12:51

DS has a black Levi denim jacket. He wears this, along with a black band T-shirt and black skinny jeans every day, regardless of the weather. Any suggestion of removing the jacket in the heat or possibly putting on a hoody in the cold is met with derision.

I'm about to take him for a Covid test, I would place bets that the wretched jacket gets another outing.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 19/07/2021 12:53

To be fair I don’t usually feel the heat; never have. I’m cold blooded so I usually cope fine, and have worked many heatwaves in dark rooms or hoodies.

I’m now 18 weeks pregnant and dying from the heat for the first time in my life… I can’t understand how anyone who feels like this regularly can enjoy the sun!

Maybe my body still runs like a teen Grin

Igmum · 19/07/2021 12:54

OP are you me?

Iggly · 19/07/2021 12:54

Sometimes teens are stubborn or they feel so strongly about something that they’ll put up with the heat.

I remember my best friend being mortified by her “fat” legs (she thought she was fat and she wasn’t). So she wore thick black wooden tights on a day out like today. Her mum went nuts and she got more and more resolute and kept them on.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2021 13:24

27 degrees Ds came home in his black down coat.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2021 13:25

And his dad let him

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2021 13:27

Actually thinking about his dad probably had no choice

BarefootHippieChick · 19/07/2021 13:29

My 17 year old is the same. Room is like an oven and she refuses to have her window open, because, you know, creepy crawlies 😒 She even carts her leather jacket with her in 30° heat, because, you know, fashion....I was never like that (cough)....

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/07/2021 13:32

so my 14yo is in a t-shirt, shorts and a fucking fluffy full length dressing gown.
I asked him why.
he said because it has pockets🤣🤣🤣

I can't fault the "it has pockets" defense. it's a classic

Rummikub · 19/07/2021 13:32

The blind down will keep the room cooler
I have my curtains shut and it really helps

mynameiscalypso · 19/07/2021 13:33

My brother is 35 and is still exactly the same. He once flew to Canada to visit us girlfriend at Christmas without taking a coat with him. His girlfriend's mother took him straight to a department store from the airport to buy him a coat that could withstand a Toronto winter. Conversely, he'd definitely be wearing a coat on a day like today.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/07/2021 13:33

@Iggly

wooden tights

🤣
I know it's a typo but I'm now imagine legs wrapped in thick bark

BarefootHippieChick · 19/07/2021 13:36

Donlewis has it spot on. They are contrary twats.

mineofuselessinformation · 19/07/2021 13:36

Because teenagers are secretly vampires and will disintegrate if the tiniest part of them is exposed to natural light! Grin

zafferana · 19/07/2021 13:37

@DonLewis

Then they don't wear coats in the winter! They're just contrary twats.
I agree!

Mind you, a lot of adults aren't much better. I was walking this morning at about 8.30am in cropped leggings and a light t-shirt - it was very warm already - and I saw several people in jeans, jumpers, jackets, heavy shoes. Unbelievable!

As for my DC - the live in shorts and t-shirts, even the depths of winter.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 19/07/2021 13:37

Blinds and windows closed in the day is the right thing to do.
Duvet cover and hoodie, not so much. 😬 Teens make no sense for a few years though. 😂

Hellocatshome · 19/07/2021 13:42

14 year-old DS has for once dressed in shorts and a t shirt instead of joggers and a hoodie, I was impressed, until he got ready to go out on his bike and put a beanie hat and a body warmer on?! Hmm

Wellonlyifihaveto · 19/07/2021 13:46

I saw a young woman earlier aged about 16-17 wearing a long sleeved black velvet top with leather trousers, felt like I was boiling alive looking at her 🥵

newlabelwriter · 19/07/2021 13:50

My DD is the same, yesterday it was 29degrees and she had on black tracksuit bottoms, t shirt and a massive fleece on. Now in her room under duvet (she's isolating) and wearing pretty much the same. I've stopped going on about it as she's not going to put on a pair of shorts anytime soon ;)
