Why do teens choose to boil alive?🥵

My teen is in her room,

Black out blind down, window closed, normal blind down. She’s under the covers in a hoodie.

‘It’s not that hot in here’😬

I couldn’t stay in it…

At least it's not just mine :o

isthisouting · 19/07/2021 15:48

I can't even read these posts, they are making me feel ill!

LubaLuca · 19/07/2021 15:49

My 17 year old is in the garden in swimming shorts Shock He did have shorts and t-shirt and a thick fleece dressing gown on until about noon though Confused

Comedycook · 19/07/2021 15:49

I could cry when I see him in a thick jumper, long sleeve shirt and blazer...

BertieBotts · 19/07/2021 15:49

My 12yo only wears t-shirt, joggers, hoodie. That is a perfect all-weather outfit according to him.

Bedroom setting: Blackout curtains, windows closed, electronics on. He doesn't put the light on because we moan at him for doing that in the day so he just sits there in the dark in a fug of Lynx or BO!

3scape · 19/07/2021 15:58

Blinds are down here. Perfectly normal to keep the sun out. Then open windows in shade outside, create a through draft and open the loft hatch. The house is cooler than outside as a result. My house is holding 22 degrees in the living room, without the fans so in theory I'd be comfortable in more clothes. But I'm going in and out of the garden.

Ladywinesalot · 19/07/2021 15:59

Oh god mine is doing something similar.
Looking at her is giving me the rage as I’m boiling…

Thinking back, I was similar;
Winter shirt and blazer - no coat
Summer: sit in room windows shut under the duvet. I’d feel cold!!!

But not in winter 🤷‍♀️

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/07/2021 16:02

Our house is definitely cooler with the windows open. All the street have open windows.

Just gone to check on her and she’s fallen sleep bless herConfused.

I think maybe it’s a heat induced coma. All electronics on just to add to the general heat overload.

I can never get my DDs to wear enough clothes! Funny breed, teenagers.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/07/2021 16:06

Exactly what you should do in this weather. Open up later when the sun gets lower , close again in the morning. There's a reason houses in the Medatteranean have shutters.

roguetomato · 19/07/2021 16:13

My 13 years old is similar. Actually it's quite dangerous to be over heated, even in the house. My country is hotter compared to England, and people can have heat strokes in the house without air conditioning. I think it's no different in UK now the temp is so much hotter than before. Watching the news from my native country and me explaining the danger, reasoning worked.

CutePanda · 19/07/2021 16:23

Does your Dd have body issues and/or anxiety? That might explain why she wears thick baggy clothes in a heatwave. Most teen girls forgo a coat, scarf and tights even when it’s freezing in winter. At least that’s how teens have always been up north.

bigbluebus · 19/07/2021 16:29

I said to my DH about half an hour ago that maybe DS should get a blood test to check his thyroid function as he is wearing his thick fleece dressing gown over his PJs whilst DH & I are walking around in shorts and t-shirt. We like the sun/heat and DS doesn't, but today us too hot even for us, so goodness knows how DS cab stand it in his dressing gown.

randomlyLostInWales · 19/07/2021 16:30

I don't get under covers in a hoodie but windows closed and blinds down is the advice I keep seeing for keeping the house cool.

DD1 went aborad somewhere hot on a school trip few years ago - she wore very long skirts and full covered tops - she had fair skin and burns easily - and got fed up being asked if she was too hot - she coped much better than most of the others - the other girls were wearing short shorts and skimpy tops

She felt a bit vindicated when she saw this

It's partly fabrics and partly style keeping heat away from the body.

TwoYearsSince · 19/07/2021 16:31

mine is off on school trip to beach wearing trousers!!!

so glad it's not just me.

however yabu for "teens" they are boiled teenagers in this country if you please.

OceanTurtles · 19/07/2021 16:34

Ugh, most teenage bedrooms just absolutely stink. Windows have to be open!

Standrewsschool · 19/07/2021 16:34

My dc actually has shorts on! Although fulfils the blinds down, window shut criteria (“due to hayfever”).

Greenandcabbagelooking · 19/07/2021 16:35

It's 29 degrees here, and my school have been out all day doing sports. A number of them were in tracksuit bottoms and a jumper. They denied being too hot.

I was melting in a polo shirt and shorts.

TheGenealogist · 19/07/2021 16:35

DD doesn't do this but I have two sons who must be roasted.

The 18 year old was at lunchtime in his south-facing room, baking like an oven, wearing pyjamas with brushed cotton full length bottoms and a fleece lined, thick hoodie. Much harrumphing and eye rolling at the suggestion he OPEN THE WINDOW, get dressed, and put a bloody t-shirt on.

14 year old at least had his window open but was wearing thick jogging bottoms, t-shirt and hoodie and was under his duvet.

Total lunacy.

TheGenealogist · 19/07/2021 16:36

@DonLewis

Then they don't wear coats in the winter! They're just contrary twats.
You've nailed it, @DonLewis. Describes just about every teenager, ever.
randomlyLostInWales · 19/07/2021 16:37

I like a long skirt on the beach - means I can paddle but also covers up legs which helps with avoiding burning - curse of very fair skined.

Walking trousers with the zips that turn into shorts - I can see working on the beach I think MIL been know to wear those. However actual trousers not so much unless billowing cotton ones that will dry quickly and could be pulled up to paddle in.

Hopefully not jeans they're very uncomfortable when wet.

TheGenealogist · 19/07/2021 16:40

@Comebloodyon

Sounds sensible. Window closed and blackout blind down best thing to do. Why would you open both to let more heat in? I doubt I'll open the black out blind in the bedroom at all this week
I really don't understand this logic. It is very warm even in Scotland today, but there is still "air", a gentle breeze circulating. We have all the windows in the house open and there is cooler air circulating through the warm rooms. Keeping doors and windows closed and blinds down would make the room much hotter.

When we've been away and the house is shut up with windows closed all day it's like a furnace.

WorraLiberty · 19/07/2021 16:41

I had the misfortune to have to travel on an utterly packed tube train in London the other day, during rush hour.

There was a teenage lad there with a few of his mates and he was wearing a full zip up tracksuit and t.shirt and woolly Beanie hat Shock

He was either super human or having a very bad hair day.

Chemenger · 19/07/2021 16:47

Went on a day out to a country park type place today. Very hot. At the food van a woman was ranting and swearing because they had run out of bottled water and didn’t they know it was hot? (they gave her a cup of water for no charge, but to didn’t stop her complaining). Maybe if she hadn’t been wearing a thick jersey dress (I have the same one and it’s definitely cosy), black leggings and DM boots laced half way up her legs, she might not have been so overheated. She was well past her teens so it’s not just a particular age group.

MotherOfBeardedDragons · 19/07/2021 16:48

DD13 has shorts on...fluffy/furry pyjama ones. She has been sitting in the small room she uses as a sort of mini game room and it gets hot all year with the tv/console.

I don’t know how she can stand it and the door is always closed which makes it worse.
