I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

I made myself a small carrot-pepper salad and wanted to add a spoonful of chilli sauce - but my brain was busy elsewhere (mit den Feen unterwegs) and so I added 'green plutonium' to my coffee.
I do not recommend this.

DoctorTwo · 30/07/2021 19:35

Today wasn't bad. A 9.30 appointment 20 miles away that somehow lasted 4 hours, followed by a visit to a nearby offy that sells Aventinus Doppelbock really cheaply. Lovely.

Marmite - Love it or hate it?

I listened to a podcast today from The Economist that provided the history of this interesting and culturally divisive foodstuff. It's not a thing in the US, which I think I am glad of. What do the people of the thread think of Marmite?

I am dying to text DS to make sure he made it to Boston okay today, but that would make me seem like a nosy, over-anxious mum, so I am managing to restrain myself.

I could get Marmite in a shop called 'Broken English'.

We have something called Maggi Würze created in 1907 on a similar yeast base. You either love it (Ruhr area and Saarland) or you look horrified (people from areas which have 'cuisine'). But a piece of grey bread with Maggi is quite niece and very very cheap - guess where I'm from. Grin

Got soaked on the beach while building sandcastles and rock pooling.
Discovered crafty little heater in room to dry out coats, trainers and socks.
Chicken nuggets and salad for dinner followed by Dairy Milk.
Another good day. X

Silkiecats · 30/07/2021 21:31

DHs Mum still insists he phones her when he makes a long journey and his brother has to do the same in their 50s. Hmm

I only tried Marmite once but I didn't like it. I used to work with a lady who bulk bought it and had it with every meal, seemed addicted.

DD has kindly given DS her phone so he can play a game with her friend who has an asd brother.

Silkiecats · 30/07/2021 21:32

Glad you had a lovely day despite the fine British weather Warthog.

HelenaJustina · 30/07/2021 21:35

@Prokupatuscrakedatus your post at 19.20 made me snort out loud.

I have signed up as a Shoreline member of the RNLI and made a donation. This may only make sense to the UK contingent of the thread.

IWanderedLonely · 30/07/2021 21:54

Miss I buck the trend with marmite - I quite like it, but prefer peanut butter. I don't love or hate it. I'm the only person in my immediate family who doesn't hate it. I always add a generous spoonful to stews to give them a richer not grey colour.

Nydj · 30/07/2021 22:33

I quite like marmite too but wouldn’t go so far as to say I love it. I mean, it’s not chocolate or crisps is it? I am aware that there are marmite flavoured crisps available but I haven’t tried them as I don’t like the idea of them.
We also sometimes add marmite to things like pasta sauce, chilli etc but that’s more to increase our vitamin B intake.

sproutsandparsnips · 30/07/2021 22:39

I love marmite. Interestingly we have been away this week in the Cotswolds, and on two occasions have been offered 'marmite butter'. It was very nice.

HildaTablet · 30/07/2021 23:57

I like Marmite but like Nydj I'm not crazy about it. I haven't had it for ages, actually. Might have some on toast for breakfast tomorrow.

MissConductUS · 30/07/2021 23:59

Can't stand Marmite or Peanut butter or Nutella. Call me weird.

Today I applied for a job and then went to meet a friend for coffee. This evening I had omelette and salad for dinner and watched Love Island and I'm now onto a similar Netflix format 'Love is Blind'. So clearly I'm a bit addicted to crap TV.

Champagneforeveryone · 31/07/2021 00:11

I'm a Marmite fan, as is DS. DH is ambivalent, but mostly because he firmly believes that sandwiches only exist with physical fillings rather than additional smears.

Sadly we are unable to decamp to cinemas etc as we are on a canal boat. DS's work has just closed due to staff shortages as has another local restaurant, so that will add a further frisson of excitement to the experience Wink

MissConductUS · 31/07/2021 00:33

Welcome, @Bouledeneige, and thanks for sharing your spread dislikes and calming daily news. Are you excited about the new job possibility? I took a look at Love is Blind on Netflix. I think I'll stick with police procedurals and period dramas.

Champagne, I'm with your DH. A smear does not transform bread into a proper sandwich.

I ended up watching quality programmes such as 90 day fiance in lockdown but I have just read that they are staged, my world as I knew it has been shattered. I may need to eat a second slice of cheesecake to recover but this will be OK as its gone midnight so counts as a different day.

MissConductUS · 31/07/2021 00:51

I've just discovered by accident that I can monitor my Ring cameras on my Kindle. Right clever bunch, those Amazonians.

Thanks for the welcome MissConductUS. I'm not too excited about the job but its well paid, it will be interesting enough, I have all the relevant experience and I'm being made redundant. So I'm seeing it as a good foundation stone so I can do what I want with the other elements of my life. If that makes sense. I have time before I desperately need a job but security would be good - I'm on my own, have 2 DC at college and still have 10 years to go on my mortgage.

MissConductUS · 31/07/2021 01:30

You are quite welcome @Bouledeneige. I have made some purely practical career choices myself. I also have two children attending university at the same time.

Are you up very late in the UK or in a North American time zone as I am?

OP posts:
Bouledeneige · 31/07/2021 02:07

Very late in the Uk! Off to bed now. Have a good evening.

Gingerwarthog · 31/07/2021 06:48

Thank you Silkie.
We also found jumbo colouring sets in the beach shop which kept us all happy.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/07/2021 08:23

We have sent off the 'notice of defects' to our LL - so I have to empty and clean the - never used a such - guest bathroom. We use it as storage for gardening and cleaning equipment and to empty buckets down the WC, that's when we noticed the leak. So now I have to find a new home for all the stuff.
DH is off food shopping.

sueelleker · 31/07/2021 09:26

@MissConductUS

Is Marmite the same thing as Vegamite?
It's made on the same principle (yeast based) but I think Marmite has a richer flavour. They brought out a limited edition Marmite XO a few years ago, which was gorgeous. @IWanderedLonely; have you tried the new Marmite with peanut butter blend?
