How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

24, With my now husband, could never have afforded it on my own!

mamaduckbone · 24/08/2021 18:59

28 - we moved out of London as we couldn't afford to buy.

Rapunzel91 · 24/08/2021 19:09

I'm 30 and still dont have one! My partner is on the mortgage of our property, it didnt make sense to be put on the mortgage as the fees were half of my (small) savings. I will continue to save towards when we buy a new property and we will also be married by then.

No way would I have been able to if I was single.

18- was both the best and worse choice I have ever made.

Yeah I could afford it in paper but at 18 I didn't really want to be spending 40% of my merger wages on a mortgage

Wow, so many people bought houses so young on here!
Moved to London straight after uni, was renting for ten years before moving back up north.
I was 31, so only 3 years ago, after saving for a deposit for 5 years!

Age 23 with ex-bf, 125% at 7.5%! That was 21 years ago..

24 ....that was ‘old’ at the time in my circle....I’m 55 now

Goodtohear · 24/08/2021 21:52

19 and still at uni but worked my socks off around studying.

atz333 · 24/08/2021 21:52

I was 20 when my husband and I bought our first house. We bought our second and forever home 11 years later and have been in it for nearly 4 years. Buying early was the best thing we did.

LST · 24/08/2021 21:53

I was 29. Already been living with dp in rented for 10 years and had 2 DC

Racingadmin · 24/08/2021 21:53

18 - and we were mortgage free by the time I turned 39

piglet81 · 24/08/2021 21:54
  1. I was very lucky - I had saved as much as I could, but also had some money my grandparents left me, and borrowed another chunk from my parents. I paid them back when I sold the flat 4 years later.

23, in 2008.

GoldGazelle · 24/08/2021 22:01

I was 28 and DH 29. Seems old compared to other posters. We waited and bought a family sized London townhouse.

Rented before that and decided we didn't want to lose money on stamp duty moving into a flat and then need to upsize to a house when children came. We had some help with deposit and then had higher salaries by then (to be honest my salary was more then than now post children trying to I balance everything).

23 and saved for our own deposit. No help from parents.

36 in 2019....so hard to get on the ladder!

I'm so surprised at how young some of you were and managed to buy.
