How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

I think some of these answers are misleading as imagine many got help (either fully or partially) with the deposit but are missing that info out! It would be more interesting to know how old people were when they brought theur first place without any help
Same answer from me! 19.
I didn't get a 1p from my parents and I'm sure my dad would cry if he had to lend me a fiver!!

My answer would still be 25, dh and I saved our entire deposit bar the £3k we already had in savings in 1 year while renting.
But I still stand by my statement that if dh hadn't been involved, at 30 I'd probably still be renting as I don't earn enough to get a mortgage alone where we live...

DH and I got no financial help from parents, but there were council grants to help with essential improvements to property.

We didn’t get any help from our parents. DH lived a very dull life before he met me, he didn’t socialise, never spent on frivolous items and he lived with his parents so only paid basic rent. He saved tens of thousands this way. He probably could have bought a flat by himself but never had the inclination.

When he met me, we decided to rent for a few years just to make sure we were committed to each other. Then we bought a house. I had a few thousand saved up that we used for the legal fees (and a little towards the deposit) but it was mainly DH living like a hermit that helped us get a house. Even now he manages to save loads because he barely replaces any of his clothes 😆 I have to buy him socks, underpants and jeans for Christmas and his birthdays or else he would forever be walking around in rags 🤣

I 100% would not have been able to get a mortgage on my own! I am too frivolous with my money and love shopping!

I’ve never had a mortgage as we built our house over a few years. Started when I was 30.

@sabrinathemiddleagewitch yes you're right. My DD appreciates how lucky she is. But there's also some achievement here - she's the one with the job that enables her to be able to her a mortgage. I have never had the earning potential she does - my money comes from other sources.

She would have a much longer wait to buy property if it wasn't for us stepping in to assist. She's currently single though so buying alone.

That was as a result of no possibility of parental help, and living in the SE so paying £1100 pcm rent and trying to save a huge deposit

Holyridonkulus · 19/06/2021 13:24

21 and mortgage free one house move later at 53.

Moving house again now at 34.

Back in 1999, I was 24 and my flat was 90k (parents gave me 10k deposit, my wedding fund!).
Prices were rising at a ridiculous rate. Would’ve been more like 60k if it had been at the beginning/middle of the year.
This is money they’d saved for me. So it wasn’t money they were relying on otherwise would’ve said no and I could’ve afforded a mortgage then.
Flat would be worth £230k now over 20 years later and a starting salary in my first job would be maybe up to 10k more than I started on, so would be impossible to get on the housing ladder without some help.
So I was lucky but luck at the same level now just isn’t enough!

Boood · 19/06/2021 15:52

19, but my parents guaranteed it, I didn’t do it on my own. It wasn’t 100% a good thing, I think. I had security, but I was also stuck in a pretty rough area for the whole of my 20s because I couldn’t afford to move, and I missed out on opportunities to travel etc.

SprayGunForBanksy · 19/06/2021 16:15
  1. No help, 95% mortgage but that was 22 years ago now and house prices have changed massively whereas salaries haven't in relation.

I saved £3250 for the deposit, it was a two bed newish build (say 15 years old) on a large estate. £64k wouldn't buy very much house today.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/06/2021 16:31

Got married at 22, got a mortgage at 23. Had first baby at 26.

I'm now 42 and, yes, we're still happily married.

Your daughter is not you.

honeylulu · 19/06/2021 17:26

I was 22 when I secured the mortgage but 23 when the same went through. My deposit was savings of £5000 (from babyhood and later added to from Saturday job money). I didn't have any help from parents but the mortgage was only £40k. My salary was £14k. All my furniture was second hand.

It's so hard for young people nowadays.

honeylulu · 19/06/2021 17:27

Sorry this was 1997 I meant to say.

CarterHelena · 23/06/2021 15:46

  1. No help from anyone else.
optimistic40 · 23/06/2021 17:50

I was 26, but then split up and signed it over to my ex. I haven't been able to afford a mortgage since (15 years later!)

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 23/06/2021 18:10

I don't have one yet. My mum was 21 in the 19⁸⁰s though

LST · 23/06/2021 18:14

I was 30 in 2020

Hen2018 · 23/06/2021 18:15

I should have said 1999. I’ve not moved from here yet!
