How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

19 This was in the days of 100 % mortgages so we needed no help with the deposit.

  1. Hope to pay it off by the time I'm 40.
Confiscatedpopit · 24/08/2021 17:46
  1. No help whatsoever. I’d be interested to see the correlation with help and age…

I haven't got one! I'm 35, a Nursing Sister (so decently paid) but a mortgage feels a LONG way out of my reach 🤣🙈

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 24/08/2021 17:52

SingingSands · 24/08/2021 17:54

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 24/08/2021 18:02

Last year at 30

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 24/08/2021 18:03

Sorry should have added my last year at 30 was with no help and it took us years to save the deposit.

Rubyupbeat · 24/08/2021 18:21

I was 19 and my husband 18, 37 years ago.

19 in the 1980s.

mafted · 24/08/2021 18:31

18 and DH was 22. Seems unbelievable now.
My eldest two are 22 and 18 and the last thing I want them to be thinking about right now is buying a house.

JustStartingOut1 · 24/08/2021 18:32

Earlier this year at 26 with my partner. 90% with no help with deposits. Could have been a year earlier if Covid hadn't hit and the market shut down and then went crazy.

Live outside of a city though but do commute (pre covid WFH) into Edinburgh for a higher salary.

CovidDoesNotExistDuh · 24/08/2021 18:33
  1. I'm 30 now.
ImAddictedToMyPhone · 24/08/2021 18:33

@ImAddictedToMyPhone

I was 23 without any help with a deposit.
And this was 8 years ago.
Confusedandshaken · 24/08/2021 18:41

I was 22 but that was the 80s. DD1 was 26. DD2 is 26 now but doesn't earn much so hasn't got one yet.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/08/2021 18:45

19, had saved a 5% deposit.

I couldn't do the same now!

DowntonCrabby · 24/08/2021 18:47

We were 21 and 22 on fairly low incomes and they’d have lent us 105%!
That was 16 years ago, I’m glad we were sensible enough not to take the max and we could have it paid off any time really we just keep the balance as it’s so low interest compared to what our investments make.
