£50 per person for a BBQ!

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing! This is an advert by a restaurant I have never been to but I always think it sounds lovely. It gets good reviews. However I would be very surprised if many people pay £50 for a BBQ! There are meats, fish/seafood, veggie options, salads & Da Bara rolls. You can go back for seconds or thirds but even so it’s a lot of money. £100 for a couple & that doesn’t include drinks. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Apparently there is a “ pudding station” too but it still seems overpriced.

I think £50 for a quality BBQ with main and pudding sounds very fair tbh when there is a lot of variety and you can spread out eating

CadburyCake · 28/04/2021 09:19

I wouldn’t pay it. But I wouldn’t pay hundreds for Michelin starred food either or in fact any meal out so I’m probably not their target market. If they have customers willing to pay that, and they do a good job, I don’t see what the problem is. Maybe it includes entertainment or something.

I wouldn’t pay that!

No chance would I be paying £50 for a BBQ!! I don't see how anyone could think that's reasonable.

PegPeople · 28/04/2021 09:22

Is there a time limit for how long people attend the BBQ? £50 for essentially an entire evening out at a venue with unlimited food isn't terrible but if its an event only lasting a few hours I wouldn't be able to justify the cost no matter how nice the food was.

sashh · 28/04/2021 09:22

OMG is it fillet steak with fillet steak on the side?

Zancah · 28/04/2021 09:27

I don't know without really looking, is it a set menu with sufficient sides, starters etc?
Cos if it is, £50pp actually is around what a three course would cost in a restaurant, maybe a higher end one but I wouldn't say it's completely out of the way.

ForgedInFire · 28/04/2021 09:30

Gosh no. There's a lovely Brazilian BBQ place near me where the servers come and carve the meat onto your plate, as much as you like, with a lovely salad bar and that's only about £12pp

Atalune · 28/04/2021 09:31

Depends on the quality?

I couldn’t eat £50 worth of food!

Horehound · 28/04/2021 09:34

I would pay it if it's nice surroundings/atmosphere. Good servers etc 🤷

Hotcuppatea · 28/04/2021 09:36

No way. Unless they're serving lobster and scallops, that's massively overpriced.

The Brazillian BBQs near us are more like £30-40 per person, but it sounds like this one is priced on the assumption that everyone will eat an enormous pile of meat and seafood, along with all the sides etc.

This sort of thing doesn't work for me, because I can't eat much in one go and nearly always take a doggy bag from a restaurant because portions are much larger than I can eat in one go.

Obviously you can't do that in an 'all you can eat' setting so I wouldn't go because I wouldn't want to pay £50 for a bit of chicken, few prawns and some salads.

roguetomato · 28/04/2021 09:37

Quality of food does matter, so if it's really good, there must be target customers.

You could go and eat one chicken drumstick for £50 I'm sure you could manage that Grin
Horehound · 28/04/2021 09:41

It's weird the presumption is to try and stuff your face for £50. If you were happy to pay, you go and eat as little or as much as you like....

Gothichouse40 · 28/04/2021 09:43

£50 for a barbeque! I don't care how posh it is, somebody's having a laugh. So for two of you (if I have read this right) it would be £100. No thanks.

GameSetMatch · 28/04/2021 09:51

Does it include a drink? I don’t think it’s too bad, if you had a three course meal for £50 it would seem reasonable. You could have BBQ prawns as a starter, BBQ steak for main and then a trip to the ‘pudding station’ as dessert.

PegPeople · 28/04/2021 09:53

Exactly. If the event was an entire evening your £50 wouldn't just be paying for the food but also the ambience and the experience of an evening out at a nice restaurant. There isn't an expectation that you must consume at least £50 quids worth of bbq food, desserts and other dishes to get your moneys worth.
Bluntness100 · 28/04/2021 09:55

So effectively it’s all you can eat three course meal? Seems reasonable to me, sure it’s not weatherspoons prices, but different meats, seafood etc and done well would be expensive.

Horehound · 28/04/2021 09:56

Yes, totally agree @PegPeople!

No I don’t think that is the presumption. It’s like any nice restaurant.
idontlikealdi · 28/04/2021 09:57

It depends on the quality of the meat / fish surely. Our local Miller & Carter steak place which isnt my favourite place in the world anyway is £30+ for a new york strip, cooked on a grill ie an indoor BBQ. Add sides and a desert you'll hit over £50 ppn easily.

Many places price by weight and you'd easily go over £50ppn.

If it's iceland sausages and burgers then I'd have a problem the price.

SwedishK · 28/04/2021 09:57

As a veggie, and not a big eater, I think I would really push it if I ate £5 worth of food at a BBQ. Of course there is a mark-up since it's a restaurant but even so, I think it's steep. It's only good value for those who eat loads, the rest of us are just subsidising their food basically.

Scottishskifun · 28/04/2021 09:58

It depends on the meat/seafood on offer.
I would pay for it if lobster, scallops, steaks. I wouldn't for a burger and sausage!
