£50 per person for a BBQ!

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing! This is an advert by a restaurant I have never been to but I always think it sounds lovely. It gets good reviews. However I would be very surprised if many people pay £50 for a BBQ! There are meats, fish/seafood, veggie options, salads & Da Bara rolls. You can go back for seconds or thirds but even so it’s a lot of money. £100 for a couple & that doesn’t include drinks. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Hello Helen . I don't have a menu yet but every other Sunday when the BBQs are on I will create a different menu. For example I have a wedding soon so I have copied there menu as an example to show you what our offering is.

Cocoa & Honey Rubbed BBQ Beef Ribs.
½ Shell Scallops, Chimichurri.
Lime & Papaya Coal Roasted Squid.
Lamb Chops, Penrose Garden Fresh Mint Dressing.
BBQ Cajun Butternut Squash, Salsa Rossa.
Charred Tenderstem and Cucumber & Peanut Dressing.

Roasted Broccoli, Cashew Nuts, Maple Syrup.
Beetroot, Feta, Basil & Orange.
New Potatoes, Chives, Pink Radish, Garlic Mayonnaise.
Mixed Garden Leaves, Mustard Vinaigrette.

Selection of Breads Da Bara Breads

Pudding Station.
Baked Dark Chocolate & Rosemary Tart, Fresh Cornish Raspberries
Mitchell Strawberries, Trewithen Clotted Cream, Vanilla Shortbread.
Cornish Cheeses.

There’s a lot there that I couldn’t be bothered to prep or know how to cook, so yeh I’d probably pay £50 for that. Kinda disappointed I’m not going there tbh.
RonniePickering · 28/04/2021 17:19

I’d pay it, going off that menu 😋

caringcarer · 28/04/2021 17:31

I only spend £50 on meat for a BBQ for about 10 in the garden.

That looks like a really nice menu.

ThursdayLastWeek · 28/04/2021 17:55

There’s no way we don’t live in the same neighbourhood!

Maggiesfarm · 28/04/2021 17:57

Could do without the scallops and the squid, poor things. Ordinary, line caught fish would be better, in my opinion.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 28/04/2021 17:57

I would have higher expectations for £50 per head BBQ. I've been to a £36 per head BBQ several years ago and really enjoyed myself. It wasn't anything like cheap hot dogs and burgers.

I think it was South American themed but had more conventional BBQ food as well. The desserts were mostly fruit based with caramel sauce, chocolate, coffee based desserts, ice creams, sorbets, truffles, rice pudding and cream caramel.

I was a vegetarian at the time but found plenty to eat and the desserts were well worth it on their own. Vegetarian BBQ dishes I remember were corn mixed with cheese and onion, wrapped in a corn husk and BBQued. Baked cornmeal croquettes and smoky whole carrots. We also had some traditional south american chips loaded with everything.

Lifeisnotadressrehearsal7 · 28/04/2021 17:59

I hadn’t seen the menu so I was perhaps a bit quick to judge.

Do you know the price of their wedding bbq per head?

I’d expect more from the pudding station but otherwise I’d have no complaints.

Trolleywool · 28/04/2021 18:01

If you like stuff on the menu and can stay a fair few hours then seems okay, if you prefer a burnt Richmond and fighting over some burgers then better to use the fifty to buy your own BBQ, coal and meat. I would say it sounds like a nice change.

Barbecuing' is a verb and is therefore the cooking method. HTH

It doesn't. There are different meanings to bbqing. In the UK, it's generally a cooking method because a BBQ (noun) is means an outdoor grill. In other cultures bbq is a cuisine. Like you get Chinese food but different styles such as szechzuan - distinct cuisine. It would be perfectly reasonable to say you are szechuaning your steak but it wouldn't tell me the cooking method you are using.

You might be barbecuing your steak. Or juggling with it. Either way, in that context they are both verbs.
dotdashdashdash · 28/04/2021 20:13

in that context they are both verbs.

Yeah. But they aren't both cooking methods. Blackstax said it was a verb, therefore a cooking method. Which isn't true.

Mangomoonlight · 28/04/2021 20:46

This sounds delicious! @ThursdayLastWeek any ideas where it is? I’ve not seen it advertised in any social media posts but this must be very local! I want to investigate for DH’s birthday!

Roasting, steaming, frying, stewing, grilling, casseroling, barbecuing. Smile
dotdashdashdash · 29/04/2021 07:25

blacksax running, standing, hitting, dancing. What's your point? Something being a verb does not make it a cooking method.

longwayoff · 29/04/2021 07:27

Hospitality has had nearly a year with no income and I would expect prices to rise now there's an opportunity to open up. That menu is very attractive, I hate cooking, I'd pay that without complaint.

In the case of 'barbecuing' it does.

It's a verb.

From the Cambridge University Press's Corpus page, as cited in the Cambridge Dictionary, when giving an example of the verb 'to barbecue' in use:

The cooking methods varied from cooking on camping stoves to barbecues.

Is it the Tresanton in Cornwall? If so well worth it.
RMNMummy · 29/04/2021 17:58

Depends on the quality of said restaurant. are we talking ‘harvester’ style place or decent pub place?

£50 is SLIGHTLY overpriced IMO, I’d expect to pay around £40 for an AYCE

eastegg · 29/04/2021 17:59

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Could two of you go, but one hide in the toilet? Then one goes and eats at the BBQ and then pops back to the toilets change clothes with the other person and they go back for 'seconds'? Wink

Bit of a faff, I know, but my money saving tips often are.

🤣
Insanelysilver · 29/04/2021 18:10

Are they possibly putting on some entertainment?
Live musicians perhaps?
A bit like being charged £25 for a coffee in Venice but you can stay all evening and listen to violinists etc.

godmum56 · 29/04/2021 18:22

at resaurants you aren't just paying for the food....but you knew this didn't you? I don't see why a semi posh barbecue restaurant should cosy any less than any other semi posh restaurant. If you don't want to pay, don't go.

minniemomo · 29/04/2021 18:25

So £50 for a all you can eat buffet basically. No way, it's £25 here and I think that is steep

RMNMummy · 29/04/2021 18:43

After looking at the menu I would say £50 is reasonable, clearly not cheap but understandable pricing. I’d pay it.
