£50 per person for a BBQ!

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing! This is an advert by a restaurant I have never been to but I always think it sounds lovely. It gets good reviews. However I would be very surprised if many people pay £50 for a BBQ! There are meats, fish/seafood, veggie options, salads & Da Bara rolls. You can go back for seconds or thirds but even so it’s a lot of money. £100 for a couple & that doesn’t include drinks. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

No but then £50 is a week food shop for us, £100 for us as a couple plus drinks is just unthinkable. I don’t even think I would pay that if I could afford it it be honest, but I’m well aware I’m very frugal.

There is / was a Brazilian bbq in Nottingham they was £25pp ish when we went for a friends birthday. That was nice and reasonably priced.

It depends on the quality of the food surely?

The process of barbecueing in itself doesn't say anything about the quality of the food that is being cooked, the service, the seating, the entertainment etc. Being a BBQ doesn't mean it should be cheap. Obviously if it is a couple of burgers and sausages like you could do in your garden then it would be extortionate but I get the impression it's much more than that.

£50pp for a meal out at a restaurant is not cheap but also not wildly extravagent for a special occasion.

Embracingthechaos · 28/04/2021 11:00

It is quite a lot, but if it's good quality food and a good atmosphere/service, then it seems fair.

I've certainly paid more than that for a nice meal.

Damn, now you've made me reminisce about all the lovely nights out I had in fancy restaurants before I had kids...

It depends what they're serving. Sausages and chicken drumsticks? Way too much. Prime steak, tuna, king prawns? Might be reasonable. Barbecuing is a cooking method not a type of food.

herecomesthsun · 28/04/2021 11:06

I would expect lobster and langoustines for that! washed down with something rather good.

Maggiesfarm · 28/04/2021 11:06

Sounds all right to me, presumably you can keep going back to refill your plate and if the company is good, it could be a pleasant afternoon or evening. Your choice!

fruitbrewhaha · 28/04/2021 11:07

Rent, rates, commercial utilities, building maintenance, wages, pensions annual leave, training, marketing, kitchen equipment, cleaning, till system, just some of the ongoing costs of running a restaurant.

They should be running at 75% GP, so £50 of food should cost £12.50, good quality meat could easily be this much with some veg salad bread and pudding. I don't think it's outrageous. But if it's Bookers burger and sausages and some defrosted ready made puddings, it's shit.

@Lifeisnotadressrehearsal7

Can you post a link please.

As a vegetarian, BBQ's are often a bit of a nightmare because of the inexperience/lack of thought with cooking everything together.

So, if they were cooking the vegetarian food separately to the meat/fish, and it was nice 'real' food (not just cheap veggie burgers/sausages etc) then
I'd give it a whirl.

I rarely eat out as in the U.K. it's pretty rubbish as a vegetarian.

ittakes2 · 28/04/2021 11:23

Its a buffet from what you have said - if they are having high quality meats and decent seafood than yes £50 for a buffet would be OK.

toolazytothinkofausername · 28/04/2021 11:38

I'd rather go to the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace Las Vegas- $64.99 per person= £46.83 per person.

Elai1978 · 28/04/2021 11:38

A 3 course meal with a decent steak and drinks can easily be £100+/head so if their serving quality food then it’s not unreasonable.

toolazytothinkofausername · 28/04/2021 11:40

(Skip video to 1:30 to start the buffet viewing)

Viviennemary · 28/04/2021 11:51

Utter madness

SallySycamore · 28/04/2021 11:53

If the quality is good I might try it — it isn't that different to a nice restaurant, and I like the idea of being able to have a mixture of foods, rather than having to choose one meal.

It would have to be spread out over a few hours, with new things being cooked throughout though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/04/2021 11:53

@ForgedInFire

Gosh no. There's a lovely Brazilian BBQ place near me where the servers come and carve the meat onto your plate, as much as you like, with a lovely salad bar and that's only about £12pp
Is that Rio Brazil? We have one too and it's lovely. I can't wait to go back there. The cinnamon pineapple at the end is my favourite thing!
justlonelystars · 28/04/2021 11:53

Seems reasonable to me, depending on the quality of the restaurant. I’ll easy spend £150+ on a meal out for me and my husband and I’d probably eat more at a BBQ with seconds etc than I would a traditionally plated three course meal.

newnortherner111 · 28/04/2021 11:56

Well I won't be going!!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/04/2021 11:57

I think it’s reasonable. We ended up paying £50 per head for a meal in the garden of our local pub the other day. It included drinks but we didn’t drink a lot. It was freezing and we didnt been stay long.

I think it’s just going to be expensive to eat out now, they need to recoup some of their costs.

UpAt5amAgain · 28/04/2021 12:01

If it included fish/seafood and soft drinks I would be interested.

I think the cost of eating out does seem to have gone up. We were looking for a lunch place this week, restaurants have just reopened here in Scotland. A local Italian wanted £16+ for pasta dishes, £20 for pizzas. Starters and desserts were £8 and the kids menu was £12.50 for 2 courses. This is a local Italian in a small town in Scotland in the middle of nowhere, at lunchtime. Felt like a lot!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/04/2021 12:10

It sounds like it depends on where it is in the country as well as the food quality.

Some of these prices being quoted for a 3 course meal sound insanely high, so if that's normal where you are then it probably looks more reasonable. Here even £35 ph is above average for three courses.

drpet49 · 28/04/2021 12:13

Nope I wouldn’t pay it. £50 each for bbq food buffet? Limited choice with some meats, salad and breads. No thanks

GintyMcGinty · 28/04/2021 12:15

As a meat eater - if it was good quality and a nice place then I would pay £50.

However I would expect to pay a lower price for my vegetarian husband.

Maggiesfarm · 28/04/2021 12:17

Nobody has to go if they can't afford it. They can have a barbecue at home instead.

I don't think it is expensive for an adult but it would be if you took your children; even if they only charged half for kids that would be £150 for mum, dad and two children. OK for a special occasion but not a regular outing. However I think it is fine for singletons and couples.

apooagnuandyou · 28/04/2021 12:18

Some places charge more than that for brunch, which is very nice but really just a fancy breakfast.

In theory it's really not a bad price.
