£50 per person for a BBQ!

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing! This is an advert by a restaurant I have never been to but I always think it sounds lovely. It gets good reviews. However I would be very surprised if many people pay £50 for a BBQ! There are meats, fish/seafood, veggie options, salads & Da Bara rolls. You can go back for seconds or thirds but even so it’s a lot of money. £100 for a couple & that doesn’t include drinks. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Depends on the quality. If it is decent meat and seafood then I would say it is cheap. If you are talking burgers/sausages then it is too expensive

This place is priced so big eaters don't bankrupt them, so not attractive to anyone who doesn't want to eat unlimited meat.

And yet there are lots of us on this thread saying we would happily pay and aren't going to overindulge on meat because of the price...

A couple of restaurants near us do barbecue boxes which work out at around £50 a head, AND you have to cook them yourselves. So I don't think going to a restaurant and paying £50 is too bad, provided it's nice, interesting food.

If it's proper BBQ I'd be there like a shot, where is it?! Only good BBQ I've had in the UK is Bodean's (but only because it's hard to find a BBQ restaurant end of, I don't live in London any more).

Teenangels · 28/04/2021 10:31

We would definitely go as it seems reasonable for 3 courses.
Starters are at least £10 each mains start at £20 and desserts about £10 (this would be veggie) where I live in an average restaurant.
A good restaurant I know during lockdown was selling their BBQ boxes for £75 a person and you cooked it at home, it all depends on quality and peoples expectations, some would see that as expensive some would not.
I can't stand chains like Millar and Carter (always horrible food)

apooagnuandyou · 28/04/2021 10:31

Depends on the actual venue, on the grounds, depends on the food...

£50 for a mediocre bbq in a suburban "beer garden" surrounded by buildings, no.

£50 in a nice restaurant with beautiful facilities and grounds and good food, absolutely.

Greenmarmalade · 28/04/2021 10:31

Ha! No.

Moonstone1234 · 28/04/2021 10:38

The problem with set ups like this is that people literally pile their food high to get their monies worth.

CallMeCleo · 28/04/2021 10:40

Some people are richer than others and to them £100 is nothing for lunch. Some London restaurants who charge £50+ per head for lunch are booked up for weeks ahead.

I wouldn't 🤷
lurker101 · 28/04/2021 10:41

Can you tell me the name of the place? In a PM if you don’t want to name them here. Sounds fantastic, I would definitely pay it, provided the meat is good quality, nice ambience, good selection and well seasoned food.

SwedishK · 28/04/2021 10:41

@Bluntness100
Yes, that's why I said that it's a restaurant and they have a mark-up, which I agree with as they have to pay for loads more than just the raw ingredients. I still think for a BBQ, it's more than I would be willing to pay as for me it would not be good value for money.

The raw ingredients should make a difference though. A lovely cooked artichoke should still be cheaper than a lovely cooked wagyu steak.

I really don't think most people would. Some people might but if there is an entire evening in which to make the most of the all you can eat options and they are regularly cooking new food and replenishing the sides then most people would sensibly eat a selection of food during the evening. I think the piling the plate scenario is much more likely to happen if there is a limited amount of food cooked or the event is time limited to a few hours.

Then I am no longer interested, Horehound, & will keep my £50 note to myself.

Beautiful3 · 28/04/2021 10:43

I genuinely cannot eat a lot in one sitting so that wouldnt be worth it to me. However if it were my siblings, they could quite easily eat 3 plates of meat and pudding. I've been to an all you can eat buffet twice before
the food was awful, cheap. Probably it's worth it, to people who can eat alot. I'd rather have a singular quality dinner I can eat. Which would normally be an expensive steak with salad and a pudding. What I'd eat would normally amount to £25 in a resturant.

littlepattilou · 28/04/2021 10:43

Ridiculous. No way would I pay that.

swimlittlefishy · 28/04/2021 10:45

@ForgedInFire

Gosh no. There's a lovely Brazilian BBQ place near me where the servers come and carve the meat onto your plate, as much as you like, with a lovely salad bar and that's only about £12pp
Jesus, imagine how poor quality that meat must be for that price? With all the overheads you can all you can eat for about 4 quid? Yeuch, no thanks.
Landofthefree · 28/04/2021 10:47

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles you could also hide some food storage boxes in your handbag Smile

same - expensive for what it is - these Brazilian BBQ places are really good value and lovely too!
Kljnmw3459 · 28/04/2021 10:51

If I could afford it and if I knew it would be good quality tasty food then I'd love to go.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/04/2021 10:52

For me it would depend on whether the cost was markedly different to their usual pricing - if it is, then it sounds as if they're hoping folk will go because so much has been shut for ages, and I wouldn't be one of them

Oh, and "meat and seafood" can mean anything from fillet and scallops to the cheapest burgers and crabsticks, so I'd want more information on what's actually on the menu too

StillRailing · 28/04/2021 10:52

I don't have a big appetite but it might be just about worth it for my huge teenager!

jackstini · 28/04/2021 10:53

Need to see the link/menu OP!

I don't think the BBQ that charges £50 pp are expecting customers who expect quantity. I assume they are expecting customers who enjoys small amount of quality food. It's very difficult to eat £50 amount of cheap food, but easy to do so with quality food.
