£50 per person for a BBQ!

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing! This is an advert by a restaurant I have never been to but I always think it sounds lovely. It gets good reviews. However I would be very surprised if many people pay £50 for a BBQ! There are meats, fish/seafood, veggie options, salads & Da Bara rolls. You can go back for seconds or thirds but even so it’s a lot of money. £100 for a couple & that doesn’t include drinks. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

£50 for three courses is fairly standard isn’t it?

If the food was good quality id probably try it.

I think so!

I guess it depends on the quality of the food. I wouldn't go there every week but I'd try it for a special occasion if it had good reviews - if the seafood/steak is really good then it's worth the price for three courses IMO. However if it was just about piling your plate high with overcooked cheap cuts then it wouldn't be for me as I don't have a huge appetite (but OH would probably still love it).

As a veggie, and not a big eater, I think I would really push it if I ate £5 worth of food at a BBQ. Of course there is a mark-up since it's a restaurant but even so, I think it's steep. It's only good value for those who eat loads, the rest of us are just subsidising their food basically.
Surely you get it’s not about the cost of the raw ingredients?
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/04/2021 10:03

If its some average restaurant where you're likely to get sausages and burgers, I wouldnt pay it. However, if its a good place and the food would be great and varied then I can understand it.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/04/2021 10:07

I wouldn't pay £50 for a meal out plus drinks and I never have more than two courses anyway.

Around a fiver for a starter and around £15 for a main is about the top end of what I'd expect to pay unless it was spectacular and I'd expect a doggy bag to take home, because I'd be full after not very much of the main.

The other thing with BBQ food is that its low skill low effort cooking. If I'm paying top prices I want something I can't recreate at home or its exceptionally faffy to do so.

If I went, I'd have a bit of meat, seafood and some of the salads and feel a bit ripped off because I'd paid the same as someone who's had two steaks, a burger, three hotdogs and a load of prawns.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/04/2021 10:08

It's not about the cost of the raw ingredients. To me, catered/restaurant food is about having something much better than what I can make at home, and this isn't it.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 28/04/2021 10:09

I’m a vegetarian so can’t see what BBQ food I could possibly eat that would even amount to £10, let alone 5 times that!

steppemum · 28/04/2021 10:10

@ForgedInFire

Gosh no. There's a lovely Brazilian BBQ place near me where the servers come and carve the meat onto your plate, as much as you like, with a lovely salad bar and that's only about £12pp
That's cheap!

Our Brazilian BBQ is £22 per head

jay55 · 28/04/2021 10:11

I spent that on one course and a couple of cocktails last weekend. Sounds a reasonable price to me.

PegPeople · 28/04/2021 10:12

How can anyone say its no better than what you could make at home if we don't actually know what food is available and the quality of that food?

Personally I've never been to a home bbq where there has been choice of seafood, fish, meats, veggie dishes, sides and a whole choice of puddings as most home bbqs are only using a small grill to cook on. So I would consider the range of choices would be something few would replicate at a home bbq.

blueangel19 · 28/04/2021 10:13

Yes, is ok is the food is very good quality.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/04/2021 10:14

Could two of you go, but one hide in the toilet? Then one goes and eats at the BBQ and then pops back to the toilets change clothes with the other person and they go back for 'seconds'?
Wink

Bit of a faff, I know, but my money saving tips often are.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 28/04/2021 10:15

A starter, main (steak) and dessert near us would probably cost almost £40 per head without drinks. So if they’re BBQing steaks and seafood, I don’t think it’s that big of a jump from another meal we’d have. I would want to see what was on the menu beforehand and make sure they had some sides and mains that I wouldn’t do at home because it would be too much of a faff for two people. I would however expect the quality to be there when I ate.

There could be a hundred different things available and I'm never going to be able to eat more than a couple of them while I'm there.

This place is priced so big eaters don't bankrupt them, so not attractive to anyone who doesn't want to eat unlimited meat.

Chemenger · 28/04/2021 10:17

If it is based on good quality meat and seafood then I don't think it's too bad. I did a bbq last weekend for friends and, since we haven't eaten with them for a very long time we had a huge rump steak, marinated and grilled, monkfish kebabs some sides and a selection of cheese to finish. It was delicious, it did take preparation time and it did cost a small fortune. It was totally worth it.
Jay Rayner has a good article about the cost of food in restaurants www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/mar/15/jay-rayner-eat-out-fork-out-cost-of-restaurant-meals

Sycamoretrees · 28/04/2021 10:17

I expect there is a premium for the location and the fact that numbers are limited due to the pandemic. Doesn't sound unreasonable for a good quality BBQ in the circumstances. Sounds like a good evening out, if the weather holds! (But you won't enjoy it if you're worrying about the cost / consider it over priced before you get there...maybe go somewhere else? )

Trisolaris · 28/04/2021 10:18

It might be worth it for top quality barbecued meat and fish options and if you usually have a three course meal.

If you are a vegetarian with a small appetite who tends to eat no more than two courses then probably not.

WingBingo · 28/04/2021 10:18

Totally depends on what is on offer. I’d be happy to pay that for 3 courses in a great restaurant with quality ingredients cooked well.

It’s all subject to that really isn’t it?

Shit burgers and sausages, no.

Quality meat and fish served with great sides, hell yeah!

XiCi · 28/04/2021 10:18

Where do you live, 1981?
Brazilian BBQs Ive been to are around £40 maybe half that if you go at lunch with a reduced menu

I think I would pay £50 if I knew the food was good quality and the inclusion of fish and seafood would suggest that its more than a few Iceland bangers. It is steep, though I've found that everything is far more expensive now restaurants have opened up again. I think places have increased prices to try and claw back some of their losses from lockdown.

MiddleClassProblem · 28/04/2021 10:19

I really want to see the menu!

Fantasy menu ogling is up there with my Rightmove habit.

roguetomato · 28/04/2021 10:19

The thing is, concept of BBQ is different for everyone. Some people enjoy the atmosphere, so the quality may not be an issue. Some just enjoy more calm, adult centric environment with quality food. Both are equally good.

Chemenger · 28/04/2021 10:21

I've just looked at the menu of a favourite restaurant and it looks like everything is about 40% more expensive than before, presumably because of reduced capacity, lack of alcohol sales (Scotland, so no indoor drinking) and to try and make up some lost ground.
