Something like MN but not MN

I have really enjoyed being on MN but recently getting a bit fed up of some of it. Is there a similar forum? Not netmums!

It's the constant trans bashing and a sort of vibe of anti left that seems to be trickling through. Also I find that most people are middle class and wealthy, I'd like a forum that's a bit more diverse.

OP posts:

What interests do you have? I’ve been a forum for 20 years that I joined because I like video games and that has every topic you could imagine alongside just chat about games. Could you find something like that? I think Reddit is a good idea too you’d just have to have a good search for the forums specific to what you want to talk about.

BastionsOfLowerMiddleClasses · 27/04/2021 11:33

Oh god, not this old chestnut again! I'd like to meet these wealthy people supposedly all over MN. Can't see them, I've tried.

Swearwolf · 27/04/2021 11:56

I switch between Mumsnet and Reddit. Every problem you have with Mumsnet (also things that bother me), Reddit has the opposite. For me, they balance each other out nicely!

murbblurb · 27/04/2021 11:58

the refusal to see antisemitism demonstrated yesterday is probably going to do it for me - and that's MNHQ not the users.

once upon a time there was yahoo answers, but stupidity levels on there were colossal and I think it has now been closed down. Pistonheads maybe?

adviceseekingnamechanger · 27/04/2021 12:06

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

You can't see it happening, and I have no actual evidence, but it's definitely happening.

I'm sure MN will have some sort of info on how many are deleted if you really wish to know.

The burden of proof is on you, not me. Feel free to share the hard evidence you have. Until then, I'll assume you're just another fool determined to smear us all as transphobes.
zzizzer · 27/04/2021 12:14

No OP - in answer to your question, you won't easily find another community like mumsnet.

Ironically the thing you probably like about it (women centred) has an inevitable effect (... women centred).

Reddit might be the answer, it has lots of subreddits on various topics and is very very very pro-trans - but it is also male dominated and that can get to you after a while.

OK Smile I can live with that.

What happened @murbblurb ?

rarat · 27/04/2021 13:02

I would say it's very class obsessed & although I really like it I often am confused by the trends.

Loads of people have big houses but tiny mortgages, save loads but spend ££££ on holidays & think it's outrageous when someone complains about not having much left from a high salary. Never mind your own business on AIBU except if you suspect a benefit cheat!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/04/2021 13:07

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

you seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that sex-based feminism is the same thing as anti-trans sentiment.

I'm really not Confused op is right, there is lots of threads started on here that are very anti trans. They are mostly taken down quickly. However I see the people who start those threads on other trans thread all the time just keeping within the guidelines, but due to previous threads I know that what they are expressing is anti trans, as they already showed that was their stance.

Have you kept a spreadsheet?
littleredberries · 27/04/2021 13:10

Glow.
I was very active there and am now fairly inactive.

  1. There is sometimes bad mum shaming for poor mums. I was flamed for not spending hundreds of euros on a car seat I genuinely cannot afford. The bullying had me in tears.
But 2. they are full on twaw in the "literal" sense (which is too much for me personally. Men can never "literally" be women but in doolally internet land anything goes).

Maybe you'll like it there? You can try.

RickiTarr · 27/04/2021 13:11

@rarat the impression is skewed because if someone starta a thread with a title like “How much do you earn?” or “I’m nervous about taking out a £1m mortgage. Should I go for it?”, it attracts all the high earners or people with mega mortgages. All the Me averages just scroll past.

OTOH, start a thread about retail work (or retail service standards, or even ID checking) and you’ll soon discover that oodles of posters work in retail.

daretodenim · 27/04/2021 13:12

@JackieLavertysWeirdVoice

I hear Reddit is lovely, and Twitter quite delightfully tolerant of different viewpoints.
Absolutely delightful places. Welcoming of alternative viewpoints too! Grin
HermitsLife · 27/04/2021 13:13

About a year ago there was another forum set up... Mum's chat? Something like that. I didn't use it cos I couldn't get to grips witht the platform but they kept posting on here trying to lure poster to their site.

Your thread just reminded me of that OP.

Apart from MN I like Lipstick Alley, its US based but very similar woman centred and with lots of different discussion forums.

rarat · 27/04/2021 13:16

@RickiTarr I get that but everyone seems to have tiny mortgages. Many it's an age thing though as there doesn't seem to be many renters either.
For example we earn well & have a big mortgage but wouldn't spend anything like what seems normal on the holiday threads.

rarat · 27/04/2021 13:19

It's the inconsistency that confuses me if that makes sense.

"Lots of I earn 7 figures but would never have a mortgage of more than 10% of my salary but I live in a big house. I save 90% of my salary but spend 20k on holidays".

I don't know anything like the above in real life.

AllDoneIn · 27/04/2021 13:26

I've always thought that MN is fairly leftist in my experience anyway. Trans issues are discussed a lot in FWR because women are actually permitted to discuss our concerns around the erosion of single sex spaces which is of huge concern to anyone involved in safeguarding work. Imagine us being allowed to discuss things freely in a democracy! Just hide the threads you dislike and report any actual transphobia you see. Spoiler alert: there's very little to be seen.

Crumpledandcreased · 27/04/2021 13:41

I feel exactly the same way OP and have asked the same question. People recommended Reddit but I find it less easy to navigate and didn't really get into it. I'm going to give MSE another go.

Apparently there's a significant number of transphobic threads that get deleted before anyone can even see them but there's no actual evidence for this, and MN swiftly deleting transphobic threads before any one can even see them is in fact be strong evidence that transphobia isn't tolerated here.

But don't mind us, we're all terrible transphobes. That's all this thread is designed to show, because why else would you ask MN for an alternative to MN? Surely that would imply MN is actually v useful. Some people don't really understand the contradictions in their own logic.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/04/2021 13:50

There's nowhere else like Mumsnet gawd bless it.

00100001 · 27/04/2021 13:50

mums.chat is no more.

zzizzer · 27/04/2021 14:02

Lipstick alley has been accused of being transphobic too hasn't it? Bloody women.
