'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I love this. Maybe it could be the kick up the ass to get my house and garden improved...

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 13:08

I recall I was amazed at how much could be achieved with one single defined project!

Because usually I am overwhelmed. :)

Oh I like the idea of this. Today mine will be to move stuff to the allocated charity shop pile rather than having it randomly scattered.

Octodog · 18/04/2021 13:11

Also love. I'm not going to do today as I am pretty busy but tomorrow is

Conservatory: clean out fridge / freezer, remove fugly blinds and measure for curtain rails, sand damage on walls, clean floor and rearrange furniture.

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2021 13:14

What a great idea.

Today I started chopping down the triffids otherwise known as fucking, buggering, bastard ivy that's taken over my garden.

Just stopped for a cup of tea but hopefully this thread will give me the kick up the arse needed to make me finish today, instead of leaving the job half done Blush

howsoonisnow85 · 18/04/2021 13:17

Love this idea! I think today I will dust mine & my daughters bedrooms & change the bedding. I need to have a think of some house diy projects- there are so many I dont know where to start!

Shuffalo · 18/04/2021 13:18

Definitely up for this! Today I need to pot up some Devil’s ivy I bought for our shower room.

Shuffalo · 18/04/2021 13:19

Sounds like you’re dealing with the Devil’s ivy too Worra!

Orangesand · 18/04/2021 13:20

Can I join too?
I will start today with ordering wallpaper samples and tomorrow with dusting down all my skirting boards 😄

Octodog · 18/04/2021 13:24

OK so I decided I will do today. I m going to put everything from our bedroom into the spare room to be sorted. Radical minimisation at play.

Saz12 · 18/04/2021 13:27

Great idea! I’m going to try this. Today I’ll finish sewing cushion cover.

WalkingOverRainbows · 18/04/2021 13:28

L0ve this! Will have a think.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2021 13:32

Love this!

Today's project is going to be sorting out my sons' bedroom (11 & 9) & getting rid of too small falling apart clothes and ordering some summer clothes that they'll actually wear

It'll involve them doing it with me, hence my reluctance.

ElderMillennial · 18/04/2021 13:34

I like this idea too.

Ok so my project for today is to go through a small pile of papers in my office.

RoseHarper · 18/04/2021 13:37

This is a great idea! I read a book a while back about the cumulative effect of improving just 1% at a time, same sort of principle. Easy to achieve but one small thing a day over a year is 365 improvements! Not overwhelming, just small simple things but hopefully house/garden will look better for it! Today I've given 3 worn plant pots a second and third coat of paint.

Oh i would love to read that book if you can recall the name.

A few years back I also decided to devote 5 mins a day to my paved bin area courtyard.

I bought a cherry tree, some garden furniture and then an insane workload got in the way. I think this is the year I shall reinvigorate this space. :)

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 13:57

Can I join? I cleaned the inside of my car today. It’s made a massive difference to how I feel and it’s encouraged me to do more. I’ve potted up some geraniums.

Tickledtrout · 18/04/2021 14:12

Oh fantastic idea! I'm in. My weekend jobs will (hopefully) be bigger projects than my weekday ones. Today... empty the ironing basket(s).

RoseHarper · 18/04/2021 14:17

The book was "Father and Son on the Penine Way" - he mentioned it in passing in relation to getting fit for the walk, and I then read up a bit more on it. If you google marginal gains or the 1% improvement rule there is a lot of info online. Somehow the few lines he wrote really stuck with me and I try to apply it to work/home/fitness.

moonlight1705 · 18/04/2021 14:40

Wonderful idea! I'm handing in my last essay for my last module in my MLitt next Sunday so I'll gave more time after that. However I could do mini 5 minute jobs this week around essay writing and work.

I potted up my baby olive tree into a bigger pot so will take that for today.

SunlessSea · 18/04/2021 14:53

Brilliant idea. I have so much to do that I don’t know where to start. One small thing a day would make a big difference.
