I've been researching my family tree and there are a lot of surnames, mostly usual Irish, Scottish but some interesting ones and it got me thinking about surnames in general.

I always thought Italian surnames are very beautiful, Baccino, Santangelli.

I love ones that are simple such as Flower, Beach and Ocean too.

So, what's the most beautiful one you have ever heard?

I came on to say Dangerfield! There were some Dangerfields in my not too distant family tree and I wish I'd got that name.

Golden or Gray. Used to cover those when I was stuck with a bad surname. On marriage chose to take my husband's name just to get away from my old one. It is probably quite dull but I love it. My in laws complain no one can pronounce or spell it but they have no idea!!

SmudgeButt · 03/04/2021 12:44

Palfrey.

Which apparently refers to a gentle horse appropriate to be ridden by a lady.

It was the surname of chap a good friend dated years back. he was a complete prat. In fact he should have been called Pratt.

Friend is my favourite. What a recommedation.

Snowball and Rainbow are common surnames in the north east but I feel they sound a little silly on an adult.

Pinkorblue25 · 03/04/2021 12:49

My surname is Rose, alot of people say how nice it is when I give them my name.

elp30 · 03/04/2021 12:50

My sister dated a man called Andres Amigo.

He was a very nice and friendly man and his name always made me smile.

His name translates in English to:
Andrew Friend

Sacredspace · 03/04/2021 12:54

Where do surnames like Sunshine and Hailstone come from? 🤔

CadiM · 03/04/2021 13:05

MorrisZapp Do you know the origin of Snowball? I worked with someone from NE England with that surname but she didn't know much about it (she said her dad thought it was from Africa??).

BikeRunSki · 03/04/2021 13:05

I know a family of Doves, which I think is lovely.

I had a teacher at school with the surname Roseblade. It's always stuck with me as being a nice surname. It makes me think of a small rose-gold ceremonial dagger, with roses etched into the hilt.
Name changed as this is pretty outing Grin but I think that might have been one of my parents. What did they teach?
DahliaMacNamara · 03/04/2021 13:06

I knew someone whose last name was Joy, which I think is lovely. But there's always a caveat. Before she changed her name after marrying, she was forever having to explain that, yes, it was her surname, not a middle name, so yes, A Joy was her full name. It must get a bit tedious to have people think you're so dim you don't know your own name.

I know a Snowball from the NE! She got Martin’s and took on a much more prosaic surname, but she has a large family of Snowballs in the NE.

I once worked for a Dr Money and a Dr Valentine. It was kind of like a Carry On movie!

I live the name of the children in Lemony Snickett - Baudelaire

I put in more asterisks than that in my post. They weren't the exact number, but somehow A** Joy looks like a much less charming name, don't you think?

I love the surname Rossiter - I went to school with a girl called this and always hoped to meet her brother!

My dad used to have business (building trade related) with someone called Isabella Paradise. If you are there, Isabella, he always thought you and your name were lovely!

Lindy2 · 03/04/2021 13:16

I have seen the surname Kiss.

It's actually a quite common Hungarian surname and doesn't mean kiss in Hungarian. It looks good as a surname in English though.

I have mentioned this before, but I regularly used to do business with a chap by the name of Comfort Golightly. I lived that name. Isabella Paradise is a similarly lovely combo.
