Crawling back to normality slightly slower than a tortoise taking the scenic route...

I introduced DD1 to Wyrd Sisters yesterday by reading it to her. She loved it. Then DH read the beginning of The Colour of Magic to me. It is lovely to hear and read Pratchett's words and share them with someone new.

I've never really 'got' Terry Pratchett, but DP likes him and DS2 (10) is enjoying Witches Abroad as an audio book.

DS1 is being treated to Hitchhikers...
It is not soothing bedtime reading, but at least he's engaged grin
He hates people recommending stuff to him, but I put on an audio book and words like Alpha Centuri and Betelguise caught his ear and piqued his geeky interest. He can struggle following audio books though (shame with the extent of his dyslexia) so I'm reading it.

I can do a great doleful voice for Marvin grin

22/02/2021 19:34Iheartmysmart

I used to read DS all sorts when he was tiny. My MIL was horrified but I’m pretty sure it’s tone of voice rather than actual words when they’re really small. He’s never quoted any of them back to me anyway.

I’m so pleased for all of you with school aged children. It’s great news that they will be back in the classroom with their friends in a couple of weeks time.

Checking in. The "roadmap" was more detailed than I expected, I doubted that there would be any dates mentioned at all: just "step one", "step two" etc. No mention of tiers at all, perhaps they were fed up with the punny headlines spelling them as "tears". For myself, I just hope that there won't be too many U-turns and "squeeeeeeeeeeeeezing the brakes" before 29th March, when there's a chance I might be playing and umpiring netball again, it's been a long winter without it, and still weeks to go! We're not sure if it will be still be the modified version, or proper netball.

Nothing said about the face nappies either, apart from a review on them separately; I expect he'll see what the public mood is on them, and how many of them ping round secondary school classrooms.

Nothing said on when we'll be able to sing in church.

I really can't decide if Saint Boris is being reckless or not with the way he's done this so far; if I'm feeling optimistic, I'd bet he's even going for the chance of being able to open some things sooner, so that people will really love him, especially before the local elections in May.

That's pretty eye watering to consider.

For all the Save the NHS rhetoric we had last year, the best way to save publuc services and better still improve their finction for siciety is to get the economy going again.

I really hope that these are the final days of lockdown and the economic toll of social distancing.
Hopefully those who have survived financially soundly through this will be keen to get spending and getting money cycling back through the economy and re-creating some of those lost jobs again.

22/02/2021 19:36Mrsfrumble

I’ve never read any Terry Prachett, but I’m wondering if DS would enjoy him. He loved Hitchhikers Guide when DH read it to him as a bedtime story a few years ago. Last week we showed the children the film version (the one with Martin Freeman) and DD fell in love with Marvin. As anyone / thing played or voiced by Alan Rickman is automatically my favourite in any film, I was proud of her good taste!

I can't wait for DD to be old enough for Pratchett. Unfortunately she's got the imagination of a damp rock so I don't think she's going to like it. sad

22/02/2021 19:42NeedWineNow

Hello all. DH is feeling very positive about the road map - I suppose that it helps that he's had his jab. I just feel this overwhelming sense of dread that they'll miraculously find excuses not to stick to it - play the new variant card or some such. I want to be happy and looking forward but I just can't.

Sorry for being a wet blanket on a bright shiny new thread.

22/02/2021 19:42Buzzinwithbez

End march for a meagre 6 people outdoors seems mean. There's no reason we couldn't have that now.
Mid April for being back to camping.. Well ok...wait until after the Easter hols so it's not too crazy is maybe the thinking.

We'll actually have been in lockdown longer than the first one and we know more and have people vaccinated, so the slow start feels overly cautious.
I'll be interested to see if people take this as a fresh reminder that they still can't meet outdoors or if they continue with the exhuberance that I saw at the weekend. I'm hoping it's the latter

22/02/2021 19:44smallandimperfectlyformed

I am really hopeful about all of the restrictions ending on June 21st, I am bridesmaid for my best friend on 25th June (originally supposed to happen last September) so having no restrictions then would be amazing! Like so many people I have putcon a fair amount of weight but now have a goal in sight. So excited about schools reopening, I am a shit teacher!

22/02/2021 19:51wanderings

I didn't see any slogans in the BBC summary of Saint Boris's speech (but then I refuse to watch his briefings on principle); but my bingo card is ready for "it isn't over yet" appearing on bus stops and the like. I'm glad that nothing has been said about tiers - there was an appalling phrase on one BBC article a few weeks ago: "we must obey lockdown, so we can go down through the gears of tiers".

The poor will be paying for Covid for years to come. Plus NHS is probably going to get worse. We are looking to buy some cheap private healthcare.
I liked the idea of government bonds from Kier Starmer. I would invest money.

22/02/2021 19:53Worldgonecrazy

The school masks thread shows the absolute level of intelligence in this country. No evidence they work but at least the teachers willl ‘feel safer, as will those parents who have wound themselves and their kids into an anxious tizzy.

I'm not sure the NHS will ever recover. Sometimes I wonder whether there will be a backlash when people who sacrificed so much to "protect the NHS" discover what needing treatment on it will be like.

Reading them threads I think just vaccinate the teachers. Just to shut them up. Because I’m sick of hearing them moan.

22/02/2021 20:03MercyBooth

@MrsEWeatherwax I think so too. I wonder if that is what is behind the slow uptake of the vaccine. They are using the only bit of power they have left. Because they know they will continue to be shat on when all this is over. Its happening already. I added some more posts to this today. Shocking experiences of being left with no electric/gas again. One customer had to sit in her neighbours house to charge and use her phone so she could contact them to start with.

I'll get this one in - before we get asked again

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

Quite!

Thanks for using my suggestion. When we open the AD pub, it could be called Tortoise Chorus?

I'm not going to speculate about any particular case. Generally lockdown has caused a lot of anxiety and safety issues with shift workers in my building telling me the Tube was terrifyingly empty.

I probably told you guys, sometimes my work is such that the only option for the daily walk was in the dark on the short winter days.

It was shocking how empty a normally mad busy area was at 6pm. One day I saw a lady running and singing very loudly. As well as being impressed by her being able to sing while running at that speed, I wondered if it was a way of keeping men from stopping her to try to talk? I've lived here for years and often see the same people on my evening walk but never heard any runners singing.

In other news, I did my Aldi shop with my lanyard tonight. I am exempt but have been too scared to wear it except at the start....then the harassment stories began and I didn't want to take the risk but I am so over it. I have my mask lowered for half my Tube journey anyway because it makes me cough so much.

bakingcupcakes · 11/03/2021 23:23

@AcornAutumn I think the less than 15mins in the room with the optician was to try and get around the close distance thing. I'm not sure though. I can't actually remember what the rules are. I just know 15mins features somewhere! Another thing to consider is their staff will have all been vaccinated under the health care bracket by now.

Thanks for the new thread @BogRollBOGOF I did wonder what was going on for a moment with the excessive copy and pasting. I was wondering if you'd done the whole thread! Grin

Does anyone else feel it gets more rough when you go out now?

I've rural MNers saying the same about the countryside - fly tipping, litter, dog shit.

bakingcupcakes · 12/03/2021 06:42

The litter on the paths around us (we're pretty rural) is atrocious. Especially in streams etc. It's really sad. The abandoned masks are particularly bad. I actually think the destruction of the environment is going to do far more damage than covid in the long term. Particularly the excessive amount of single use plastic. No one seems to give a shit about that anymore.

Worldgonecrazy · 12/03/2021 06:43

Definitely more dog shit. As for flyvtipping etc it’s sadly very much a feature in the areas around my Midlands home but has been for years, not a COVID thing.

Iheartmysmart · 12/03/2021 07:30

Ooh a nice new thread! Glad we still have our mascot in the title.

Absolutely loads of rubbish everywhere here as well. Plenty of bins as well so it is just sheer laziness. I don’t understand the people who come over to the local lake to feed the ducks because “they look hungry” then leave their discarded plastic bread wrappers on the ground where said hungry ducks can eat them and possibly die!

Am both cross and sad this morning. Had a call from a friend last night whose husband has just had another stroke but this time it’s caused irreversible damage to his brain. He is mid fifties and whilst his medical care has been excellent despite Covid, the family have spent the last year pretty much under lockdown and will never be able to have normal holidays, days out, family get togethers etc again. It makes you realise that life is short and unpredictable and we are currently merely existing.

On that depressing note I’m going to have a coffee and a cry.

Taswama · 12/03/2021 07:52

Morning all, checking in for the intelligent debate, sanity and humour. Just introduced DS1 to the concept of luxury beliefs. I had it used in relation to the trans debate but one of your comments made me think how relevant it was to lockdown too, easy to demand lockdown when you are in your stable wfh public sector job.

In other news, my team member who I've had permission to come into the office one day a week on mental health grounds has asked if he can come in another day. Basically, can I turn a blind eye , as it took so long to get permission for one day there is no point asking for more. He's living at home, working from his bedroom, so it's hardly surprising he finds the (95% empty) office more conducive to getting work done.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/03/2021 07:54

Iheart, that's so sad for them. I'd be rather bitter if some life changing event occured at this point after a year of wasted existence. My main worry at this point is getting over to see MiL, she'd reached the age of old age catching up with her in the last 2-3 years, and while she wasn't getting out so much anymore by 2019, spending a year in the house will have done her no good. At least her first dose of vaccine should be kicking in about now... slow handclap for the EU.

I sing when I'm running Grin It keeps me going during hour 2! Plus this year, I haven't had enough chance to play music, sing and dance/ prance about without winding up sensory DS1 or interripting DH who seems to be semi-permanently on the phone/ conference calls.
Ahh, there's nothing like wheezing along to Kate Bush when I'm running up that hill Wink

@NeedWineNow

Checking in. I've no idea what it's like outside - I haven't been out since Sunday. I'm starting to feel like a hermit.
Squally showers around here. I dodged the worst of one on the school run and just caught the tail end. The poor parents with a 20 min wait... most of us are a short walk from home that's not quite worth going there and back for.

I just hope it's a better phase while I'm out with my running buddy later. I find strong winds hardest to run in out of all weather hence braving the rain on Wed for my long run.
My body's been pissed off with me all week. First it was just too tight after months of neglect... then I took it to the osteopath... then my long run was 2 miles longer than expected... and I'm abusing it by reinstating my yoga which is kind of a catch 22 because I'm so tight and stiff, but I need to get it going with yoga again. The last few months have been such a void of time and so disjointed (like about 2 weeks of classes between lockdown #2 and un-Christmas) that it's hard to judge where my body's at until I've upset it by doing something that was relatively gentle.

Healthier eating is back on now I'm not constantly carbing up ravenous children and quietly bored rigid in the kitchen making token efforts at home learning.

The 9-10 yos of DS1's class have really shot up. DS1 is growing like a dandelion under a trampoline and doing that stretch up thing. He's insatiably hungry too.

bakingcupcakes · 12/03/2021 10:09

A new low in the Baking household this morning. I'm unable to open my new bottle of squash by the traditional method (it won't unscrew) so I've had to cut the bottle with scissors and decant it into the bottle I've just finished. It's given me something to do I s'pose.

That's sad about your friend Iheart. There'll be so many people who've had their last years of healthy life ruined by this.

Loving the mascot pics!

Curlygirl06 · 12/03/2021 10:49

"Twinkle " likes the name The Tortoise Chorus" , approved by her. Did you know that when giant tortoises mate it's incredibly noisy? Roaring and screaming and banging of shells. I think I've got a video somewhere.
